Brewing equipment and Brewing Profile

Part 1
So there is many way to brew a beer to give it a different taste or look but most of
them follow this basic brewing process no matter what ale or lager you are making.
The basic equipment that is needed to brew beer would be a boiling pot, airlock,
fermenter, stirring paddle, siphon, thermometer and depending on if you will be
bottling the beer you will need some bottling equipment as well.
At the beginning of the beer brewing depending on what kind of beer you are
making and what flavor you are going for, different types of malt are crushed
together to break up the grain kernels in order to extract fermentable sugars to
produce a milled product called grist.
After the grains are done steeping you would remove them from the boiling pot and
add malt extract in order to make unfermented beer also known as wort. The wort is
then brought to a controlled boil before the hops are added. This is a crucial point
when making the beer because depending on when you add the hops will determine
how bitter your beer will be. For example IPA beer is made by having the hops boil
in the wort longer than other beers.
After boiling, the wort is ready to be cooled to the temperature that the it needs to
be depending on whether it is going to be a lager or an Ale. If its going to be a lager
it would need to be cooled to about forty five degrees or around high sixties for a
Ale. The beer is then transferred from the boiling pot into the fermenter.
To start the fermentation, yeast is added during the filling of the vessel. Yeast
converts the sugary wort into beer by producing alcohol, a wide range of flavors,
and carbon dioxide. At this point it is crucial that you use an airlock in order to
prevent any contamination going into the beer and thus messing it up.
After fermentation, the young green beer needs to be matured in order to allow
both a full development of flavors and a smooth finish. Depending on whether the
beer will be bottled or kegged will determine next step. If you are going to be
bottling your beer you would need to first transfer your beer into a bottling bucket
that has a corn syrup and water solution in the bottom that way once you bottled
the beer it would continue to ferment in the bottle and thus carbonating the beer for
a few more weeks while its in the bottle.

Brewing Profile
Green Bench Brewing Co
This week we will be visiting Green Bench Brewing Co. in St. Petersburg, FL and get
to learn first hand the beer brewing process for commercial sale. The History of

Green Bench Brewing Co. Started off in the early 1900s and the city of St.
Petersburg was known as the City of Green Benches there were thousands of
green benches in downtown St Pete and this was gathering place for the local
residents and tourists. At the time The brewery was looking for a new to call
themselves and they figured why not use the name Green Bench as it symbolized
something great in downtown St. Pete. Green Bench Brewing Co. is St. Petersburgs
first craft microbrewery. Green Bench Brewing has a 15 barrel brewhouse that sits
within a 6,000 sq. ft. warehouse building on Baum Ave in St. Petersburgs downtown
Edge District. Green Bench Brewing currently has five 15 barrel fermenters and
plans on adding additional fermentation vessels as growth permits. Green Bench
Brewing Co. also has a 1,500 sq. ft. tasting room. The Brewer at Green Bench
Brewing Co is Khris. Khris joined the Green Bench team as a rising star in the Florida
home brewing scene, winning several state-wide medals in brewing competitions
over the last few years. In that time he worked for Cigar City Brewing where he took
his brewing knowledge to the commercial level, and for nearly two years he was
employed by Southern Brewing and Winemaking. While there he taught Beginner
and Advanced brewing classes as well as developed and brewed many of their
award winning beers. In addition to his commercial brewing experience, Khris has
brewed some of his personal recipes at both Pegs Cantina Brewpub in Gulfport, and
at Tampa Bay Brewing Company in Ybor City. Green Bench Brewing Co really does
have a wide range of beers ranging from Pale Ales, to Stouts but the one I notice
they have a lot of are IPAs. One of the best ways Green Bench Brewing Co has
marketed themselves is not only being the first micro-brewery but also getting
recognized by many of the top media companies in Tampa such as the Tampa
Trubune, Tampa Bay times, Fox 13 and many more. Some of the events they have
coming up as well are going out to Second Friday on Friday September 11 th, being
on Jimmys Sliders Food truck for a few days starting September 18 th, and hosting a
Tampa bay Rays watch party on the 25th of September.
