Task 2:

RESEARCH FOR
CHANNEL 4
DOCUMENTARYCYBERBULLYING/BULLY
ING
I have been asked by channel 4 to produce a short documentary film on an issue
which might affect young peoples lives. The topic which my documentary
will be based on is cyberbullying and general bullying with a target
audience of 13 to 19 year olds. I have chosen this target audience as I
think it is the age range that is most effected by cyberbullying especially
as we now live in an ever growing generation of technology. I will have to
take in consideration when to show this documentary, how I will do my
research and where I will get my information from. As well as how it is
going to be produced and how much it will cost to finance it all.

Bullying primary source information:

As part of my own
research I made and
released my own survey
asking general questions
about cyberbullying and
how they think is the best
way to deal with it. These
questions were answered
by a mixture of boys and girls aged 16-17years old
that also may come from different backgrounds. The
questions covered topics like how many social
media accounts they have and included some
certain social media sites for them to choose and
pick which ones they have/hold an account with. This is my own primary research
that was conducted by myself whilst using my own
questions to help me gather information on what my
classmates views where on the topic of cyberbullying. It
was made obvious to me that when I analysed the results
that the people that took my survey where educated in
what cyberbullying is as when the question was asked what
is the correct definition of cyberbullying 100% got it right.
The results of this are shown on the left. Another thing that
I found from my results was that everyone who answered
had at least one social media account this is shown by the graph on the right with a
list of the social media accounts listed and how many people in % have an account
with that social media site. As you can see 100% of people that answered this survey
have a Facebook account with a variety of other accounts along with it and Twitter
and Instagram being the second most popular sites to have accounts with. These
three sites are what I deem t be the most personal and more centred about you were
as sites such as Pinterest and Tumblr are more sites for fandom love to be expressed.
When they were asked with how they were to deal with being bullied over the
internet a staggering 60% would just delete the messages, this is a worry as
cyberbullying can be considered worse as having something insulting said to your
face as it is there in black and white for you to read, someones opinion about
yourself whether they know you or not purposely to hurt or insult you. Something
like that is defiantly going to have some type of an effect on you and locking it away
pretending it never happened is not healthy to do especial at an age of where these
young people are finding themselves who they want to be and experimenting with
their looks and personality and can be damaging to self-esteem and confidences.
Here is the link to my questionnaire: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NCPZHV8
This is the basic look of what my survey looks like when I was designing it where I
had to input the questions and also the way that I wanted people to answer it, so if I
wanted the question to be multiple choice or not.

The screen shot to the right is the preview of

what my survey actually looks like

Interview with a bully victim

When did you first become a victim of bullying?
I started getting bullied in
kindergarten.
What forms did the bullying take?
It was everything from name calling, to theft of my property to being
beaten up.
Why did people target you?

I was different. Kids tend to

focus on something that stands out as being "wrong". In my
case, it was the fact that I had a prosthetic eye, and I was artistic instead of
athletic.
Did anyone ever try to intervene? (school, parents, bystanders)
Both the school and my parents
intervened to an extent. The school just told the bullies (there was the ring
leader and his "cronies") to stop, but they never listened, and often times I
would get in trouble for trying to defend myself because they would all tell
the teachers I started a fight when they had in fact come after me first. Bystanders generally
cheered them on or even
got involved.
My parents told me to just ignore them, but ignoring name
calling is very different from ignoring flat out violence to one's self. Eventually my parents let me
study Ju-Jitsu
which helped me feel more confident and taught me self-discipline and to defend
myself.
How did the bullying affect you?
I think it's fair to say that
bullying never affects the victim positively at a young age. It made me very
shy and scared. I always felt like I had to be on guard. Going to school in
the morning was torture knowing what was waiting for me when I got there.
I used to pretend to be sick to try getting out of going to school. I would come
up with excuses or lies that I told parents to try to avoid having to be around
the other kids at school. It made me pretty paranoid for a little kid!
How did you overcome the bullying? Or how did you cope?
As I got older I was certainly
bullied less, but that doesn't mean it stopped. I ultimately overcame it after
a summer at a performing arts camp where people were very accepting of me and I
was able to come out of my shell and really have fun.
When I got back to school I was a different person.
Confident, willing to stand up for myself, and ready to take on anything that

was thrown my way. I was also just sick of being treated badly after finding
out what it was like to be accepted, so I decided I wasn't going to let it
happen anymore. Most of the time I was able to talk myself out of situations,
but there were a few fights as well, and other kids could see that I could
handle myself and started to lay off.
How has the bullying affected who you are today?
I actually think being bullied
back then has made me a far better person today. I'm very caring and compassionate towards
others. I'm very protective of my
friends and family, and truly worry about and wish to help those who often can't
help themselves. I hated being bullied,
but in a way it molded me into a stronger man in the end.
What advice do you have for kids who are bullied?
First and foremost: TELL! It
used to be that if you "tattled" you would get into even more trouble, so it
was essentially being bullied into silence. But once someone knows, (parents, the school,
etc) it's out there and some kind of intervention can happen. Never be afraid to tell on a bully.
No matter what, stay true to yourself. Don't change who you
are because of a bully. They are ultimately cowards who do what they do to
build themselves up and try to make themselves look "cool".
Learn to do something that makes you feel confident. For me
it was martial arts and magic/sleight of hand. Martial arts helped me realize
that I could stop a bully if I absolutely had to, but never to go around
looking for trouble. Sleight of hand gave me a skill no one else in school
possessed, and other students wanted to see what I could do, and liked my
abilities. When other people like you and want to be around you, it makes it
much harder for a bully to come after you.

What advice do you have for parents of kids who are bullied?
Listen and act. The most
important thing a parent can do is listen when their child says they are being
bullied and help in any way they can. Just reminding your child how special

they are and how much you love them, helps. My parents were and still are very
supportive of me, and having that support at a young age went a long way.
But
don't baby a child who is bullied. Unfortunately, there are some things they
may have to learn on their own when dealing with bullies. Hiding them away from
what's out there won't help to make them stronger. Teach them how to deal with
adversity in any way you can. Encourage their confidence, their interests and
be an active part of their lives.

Bullying Primary source information:

I found this information on the Childline website: https://www.nspcc.org.uk/servicesand-resources/research-and-resources/childline-annual-review-2014-2015-alwaysthere/
The results and information that is shown is an example of how bullying is not just
children the playground calling each other names but it can also be at home. The
information that is shown above also really puts into prospective the effects bullying
can have on people especially children.

Newspaper Articles
Over the years there has been may newspaper articles published discussing the
impact bullying. As well as un covering the shocking storied of teen suicides. An
example of this is from the daily mail boy driven to suicide by bullys this
particularly article was published on the 4th July 2003. The article talks about how a
distort mother discussed the suicide of her 11-year-old son, she claims that the

reason for his death was that he was bullied at school and thats what drove him.
Sandra Thompson found her son in his bedroom when she returned home from work
in the evening. From this article we know that the effect of bullies is not just the
victim but also the family, bullies not only have the power to destroy lives by making
them feel that useless that they honestly think they dont have a reason to live but
also the power to destroy families and brake them apart. At age 11 Thomas is know
to be the youngest child to have committed suicide because of bullies after this case
soon after there was more that followed. As you read more through the article it
becomes clear that the youngest primary school student was bullied for simply
being different He was extremely clever and loved reading and doing his
schoolwork. So they teased and tormented him relentlessly - just because he was a
bit different. These bullies killed my son.

here are more examples of newspaper articles...
A 13-year-old girl committed suicide after being bullied at school for being tall:

'No one knows how much I am suffering inside': The heart wrenching video
diary of a beautiful teen who was driven to suicide by bullying and
depression... and her family's determination her death will not be in vain:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3216601/No-one-knows-suffering-insideheartwrenching-video-diary-beautiful-teen-driven-suicide-bullying-depressionfamily-s-determination-death-not-vain.html
This isnt just something that is covered in the UK but also a very big problem in
America as well.

Amanda Todd
When Amanda Todd posted a video on Youtube with the use of flash
cards, it seemed like a cry for help. She told the story of being abused,
bullied, harassed, and stalked online and in person. She narrated her
silent story of how she used self-harm, drugs, and alcohol in an
attempt to silence the pain she suffered as a result of CyberBullying.
She was desperate for someone to understand her, listen to her and
simply, she wanted a friend who got her.

Different types of bullys

Female Bullies: Cases of bullying are on the rise. With not just males being the
bullys but also females. Actually female bullies are just as common as males. Its
often thought that boys and male teens are known for bullying but females can be
just as ruthless especially when it comes to the type of bullying that is not physical.
It is often that cyberbullying is what is spearheaded by teenage girls. However, harsh
words, lies and rumours can be just as devastating to a child or teen as being
physical attacked.
There is actually a long list of different forms of bullying:

Name Calling vs. Bullying

Physical Bully
Bullying Harassment
Parents That Bully Children and Others
Workplace Bullies at Your Job
Text Bullying
School Bullies and Bullying Behaviours
Verbal Bullying
Cyber Bullying & Other Social Bullies

Statistics on bullying and Suicide:

Suicide is the third biggest cause of death among young people. With about
4,400 deaths per year. For every suicide there is at least 100 suicide attempts
among young people.
Over 14% of high school students have considered suicide and almost 7%
have attempted it.
Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide.
A study in Britain found that at least half of suicides among young people are
related to bullying.
10 to 14 year old girls are more at risk of suicide.
According to studies done by ABC News, nearly 30 percent of students are either
bullies or victims of bullying, and 160,000 kids stay home from school every day
because of fear of bullying.

Cyber Bullying Statistics 2014

25 percent of teenagers report that they have experienced repeated
bullying via their cell phone or on the internet.
Over half (52 percent) off young people report being cyber bullied.
Embarassing or damaging photographs taken without the knowledge
or consent of the subject has been reported by 11 percent of
adolescents and teens.

Of the young people who reported cyber bullying incidents against

them, one-third (33 percent) of them reported that their bullies
issued online threats.
Often, both bullies and cyber bullies turn to hate speech to victimize
their target. One-tenth of all middle school and high school students
have been on the receiving end of hate terms hurled against them.
Over half (55 percent) of all teens who use social media have
witnessed outright bullying via that medium.
An astounding 95 percent of teens who witnessed bullying on social
media report that others, like them, have ignored the behavior..
Unfortunately, victims of cyber bullying sometimes, in an attempt to
fight back, can shift roles, becoming the aggressor. Often, this
happens as a sort of back-and-forth between victim and aggressor
which tends to continue the behavior.
More than half of young people surveyed say that they never confide
in their parents when cyber bullying happens to them.
Only one out of every six parents of adolescents and teens are even
aware of the scope and intensity involved with cyber bullying.
More than 80 percent of teens regularly use cell phones, making
them the most popular form of technology and therefore a common
medium for cyber bullying
About half of young people have experienced some form of cyber
bullying; among them, between 10 and 20 percent experience cyber
bullying regularly.
The most common types of cyber bullying tactics reported are mean,
hurtful comments as well as the spreading of rumors.
Girls are at least as likely as boys to either be cyber bullies or to be
targeted as cyber bullying victims.
Boys are more likely to be threatened by cyber bullies than girls.
Cyber bullying affects all races.
Victims of cyber bullying are more likely to suffer from low selfesteem and to consider suicide as a result.

Market Research
Channel 4

This gives us an idea of what channel 4 is looking

for in its next documentary to be televised on the
channel. As of course they want people to watch it
so therefore it needs to be relevant to current affairs
and issues In England to day.
Channel 4 looks at why people watch certain
programs and at what time is the most popular for
viewing/ watching TV.
This
is a
table that shows what channel 4 is
showing through the week and what
types of shows they are.

Channel 4 makes people think

about things in new and
different ways, more than any
other terrestrial channel- (Ipsos
Impact Tracker, 2010) Channel 4 is the most talked about commercial TV
channel for 16-34s-(TGI 2009)
Channel 4 is watched by 21 million ABC1s every month -(Barb Jan-Nov 09)
Market research is done so that people are able to understand how and why people
watch TV, This is done by looking at key trends in what people watch and what type
of TV programs are most popular at the time this is done by TV ratings, however how
the channel is able to decide what to show is by looking at trends and through
consumer insight to help them find the next big thing to view on TV.

Production Research
For the production to go ahead a crew is need here is some possible crew required
for the production:

Director - has overall control of the production.

Producer -controls schedule, makes arrangements for actors and locations.
Camera Operator shoots the video as director wants, looks after camera
Sound Recordists checks sound levels, uses earphones and mic for dialogue
Lighting organizes lighting set-ups or checks position of camera in relation to

sun/other natural lighting

Continuity logs the shots and checks costume, hair and mise-en-scne
Costume researches, provides and cares for costumes
Make-up provides and deals with characters/presenters make-up
Set Designer plans and provides the props and dresses the set Optional
Assistant Camera - pulls focus, provides tracks, looks after camera

For all of the production there must be insurance in place, in case anything happens
then the company is insured for it. Channel 4 has a production insurance guide. And
have approved

http://www.mediainsurance.com/. This screenshot is an example of the best cover

insurance that IMB has to offer with the highest amount of

Loss and hire 50,000

Technical Equipment 100,000
Public Liability 1M
Employers Liability 10M

The total of all this insurance will cost 400.00 as long as my documentary is filmed
within the UK, this insurance will also last 30days however Tax is not included in the
total.
There are many types of insurance that may be needed these are examples of
them

Types of Insurance

General Liability: A major reason for needing insurance is liability. For

example, if someone trips over a wire or you bump into an old lady who breaks her
hip -the law will hold you responsible. Without insurance, those people can file a
claim against you and you'll have to pay for their injury. This insurance will protect
you against claims for bodily injury or property damage liability arising from your
filming activities.

Negative Film and Video Tape: This covers direct physical loss,
damage, or destruction of film or tape stock up to the amount of insured production
costs.

Miscellaneous Equipment: Covers risk of loss, damage or destruction to

cameras, camera equipment, sound or lighting owned or rented.

Error and Omissions (E&O): Covers legal liability and defense for you
against lawsuits alleging to unauthorized use of title, format, ideas, characters,
plagiarism, unfair competition or piracy.

Budget
On the right there is an example of a spreadsheet to help plan out and organize the
budget. My budget will be on a small
scale so everything is a lot more likely
to cost a lot less however a budget still
needs to be worked out.
The Budget consist of how much
everything is going to cost e.g.
cameras, having to hire things if
needed. This documentary will have a
low budget as it is only a small scale documentary purposely made for channel 4, so
it will only be used by channel 4 and the money made by views will not be major.
Other things that need to come out of the budget are
Crews Pay
Food for the crew etc.
As you can see that other things need to be thought about other than just
equipment. The screenshot to the left is an
example and gives us an idea of how much
money can be spent on the production e.g.
cameras, sound. All of these are vital for the
production of my documentary.
