Population Models with Excel

2) What are the equations for exponential and logistic growth?

dN/dt =rmaxN and dN/dt=rmaxN(K-N/K)
3) In your exponential model, where were these factors incorporated when
calculating your new population number?
Birth rate and death rate were incorporated as they were represented by r, and
N in our equations and data.
4. A) How do the graphs compare to each other? Explain the differences you see in
terms of effect of time to population growth.
Both graphs are based an exponential growth rate. With the same r and N rates.
However, they differ as one has a population change over 20 years and the other over
a 100 years.
5) Explain how the population and graph changes when the r value changes
(include increase, decrease, and 0 growth.
If he r value change were to increase the graph would still grow exponentially. If it
were to decrease it would mean there is a certain decline in the growth rate, the
death rate or N value increases. If there were 0 growth the graph will most likely be
at a constant rate.
6) Can the population in the exponential graph continue to grow like that forever?
Explain
There could be the possibility that the graph will keep growing unless there is a
decline in the system or whether it is determined by a survivorship curve.
7) What value is introduced in the logistic model? What is the impact on the
population number based on your graph and data chart?
The value K , which is the overall carrying capacity in a population, was introduced.
As the graph progresses to 800 the growth rates become constant.

8. A) with a set rate of growth, how does the change in carrying capacity effect
the shape of the graph over time?
If the carrying capacity increases the graph will also increase, as it begins into 800 the
graph became constant.

9) Explain how the population and graph changes when the r value changes
(include increase, decrease, and 0) and the K value changes (large and small).

The r and k values determine the increase, decrease and constant rates in the graph,
which affects the population over a certain time.

10) What was the purpose of the activity? Explain what you learned about
population growth models and how it relates to the standards. Include what
factors can influence population number and the definition of a population.
What material are you still struggling with or need to review more?
What aspect of this topic would you like to study further and/or what did you
enjoy the most in this assignment?

The purpose of this activity was to distinguish and relate the exponential and logistic
graphs. Also, that these are models to relate to real life events, and calculations of
population rates and changes. These relate to the the standards as they show a
change of populations or communities through out the year in abiotic and biotic
factors. To where extinctions rates may also apply, or death rates which will decrease
the data. Material I'm am struggling at the moment is the formulas used in
exponential and logistic graphs. I would some more practice and help. I would like to
learn more about extinctions or death rates which can impact the growth rates of the
certain population over time.
