Whilehistoryrecountsmuchofthefailuresandsuccessesofmenonthebattlefield,Thestoryof
thewomen'spartintheCivilWartendstobeoverlooked.Somewomendisguisedthemselvesasmen,
othersservedasspiesandnurses,andtheresthadtocompensateforthelackofmenintheirsocietyonce
theywereallsentofftothebattlefield.Eventheenslavedwomenwhowereonthetracktofreedom
struggledinthetransition.WomenintheNorthandSouthsaidtheirgoodbyestotheirlovedones
includingtheirfathers,husbands,andsonsandtriedtheirbesttostayinvolvedinthewarthatwastaking
placerightoutsideoftheirdoorstepinawarthatwouldultimatelychangethecourseoftheirlives.
Priortothewar,womenwerebeginningtotakemoreofafirmroleinsocietyastheywere
gettingmoreandmoreopportunities.Theywereofferedastrongereducation,morerights,andaccessto

manufacturedgoods.DuringtheSecondGreatAwakening,womenevenbecameactiveparticipantsin
religiousrevivals.Womenweregivenmoreofavoiceinsocietyandtheyusedthatvoicetogetmore
involvedinreformssuchastheabolitionofslaveryandthecolonizationofformerslaves.However,they
didnotyetrealizetheeffecttheabolitionofslaveryandtheroadtogetthisabolitionwouldhaveontheir
livesinthelongrun.
Asthewarbegan,themenandslavesleftthewomenathomewithanabundanceoftasksthat
theyhadtocompletetokeeptownsrunningwhilethemenwereaway.Intheend,roughly620,000
soldierswereleftdeadandwomenhadtotaketheirresponsibilitiesandperformexhaustiveworkat
home.Thisworkwassoexcruciatingthatitleftalotofwomenratherwantingtofightinthebattleand
somewomentookaction.Theydressedupasmen(ordidn'tatall)andfoughtalongsidemenandthey
werenotidentifiedaswomenuntilinjuredorkilled.However,womendidn'thavetofightdirectlyinthe
wartobeconsideredsomeoftheCivilWar'sgreatestheroes.
Someofthebravestwomenfoughtthewarfromthesidelinesnursingmenbacktohealth.Ittook
alotcouragetoworkinthisdangerousenvironmentofmalestrangers,buttheymanagedthechaos.Not
onlydidtheytendtowounds,buttheypassedoutsupplies,deliveredletters,cookedmeals,anddid
laundry.Theyeventaughtsomemenhowtoreadandcleanedtheirguns.IntheSouth,thewomen
providedsuppliesforthemenonthefrontastheydodgedthebulletsofwar.Infact,oneofthemost
fearedformsofwarfareintheSouthwasguerrillawarfareasthereremainednodistinctionbetween
soldiersandciviliansleavingmanypeoplewhowerenotdirectlyinvolvedinthewarharmedincluding
women.
Someofthemostrenownedwomenwerethewomenwhodecidedtohelpinthewarbyserving
asspiesanddeliveringmessagesbetweeneachside.Theywoulddiscreetlyhidemessagesintheirskirt
hoops,corsets,etc.,andsomeofthefamousspiesincludeHarrietTubman,BelleBoyds,andRose

Greenfolk.Asfortheenslavedwomen,theyhadtheirfairshareofstrugglesastheyhadnoshelteror
clothesastheywerebeginningtobeliberated.
Afterthewar,thewomencontributedtopostwarreliefandfreedman'sorganizations.Asthey
stoodbythewarandthoseinjuredinthewar,manywomenwroteaboutthetalesofthewarandwithout
them,muchofthewarwouldn'thavebeenrecountedinthedepththatitistoday.Theyareresponsiblefor
thestoriesfromoffofthebattlefield.Thebattlefieldstoriesaremostlyhisstory,butoffofthebattlefield
isherstory.Liferemainedmorechallengingforthewomenonceslaverywasabolishedasthewomenhad
tocompensateforthelackoflabor.Althoughtheywerenotonthebattlefield,thewomenwerefighting
thisbattlealongsidemenandwithoutthem,thewarwouldhaveresultedinfarmoredeathsandmightnot
havebeenevenremembered.
