This week I was able to write and present an IEP, substitute for my
master teacher, and write a paper for EDSP 577 including assisted
technology. Im feeling very confident as the end of the credential program
is approaching, and I know that I am growing as a future education specialist.
I am trying to learn as much information as I can before I am finish the
program.
While writing a students IEP, I came across two challenges. The first
challenge was that I was only writing the IEP, and would not be the one to
enforce the plan throughout the year. This changed my initial plan to write
the IEP by myself, and I had to ask my master teacher for support to
collaborate appropriate goals. The second challenge was that I felt illequipped to handle the daunting task of writing and presenting an IEP. I
have taken many classes to prepare me for this task, but I do not feel
confident in doing so. When it came time to present the IEP, I actually felt
very confident in reading and explaining the goals. I was happily surprised
by my presentation during the meeting.
Thursday of last week and Tuesday of this week, I was able to
substitute for my master teacher. Both were really great days and the
classroom felt well managed. I feel like the students see me now as their

Case 2
teacher, instead of the student teacher, and it has been a very positive
change.
I believe I have demonstrated the Competency of Historical and Legal
Foundations
this week. The competency explains, Candidate demonstrates ability to
communicate orally or in writing or through artifacts, the historical and legal
foundations of special education that apply to their site at a high level;
practice partially aligns with state/district, legal, and ethical mandates. Also
aligns to their personal philosophy.
Competency #2 of this states that I must implement educational
practices in alignment with state and district mandates, ethical guidelines,
and current legislation and litigation including practices reflective of FAPE,
LRE, transition planning, nondiscriminatory assessment, and due process. I
believe I met this competency by explaining these factors to the parent in
the IEP meeting. I also have shown proof of meeting this competency by
teaching the general education curriculum to the students in my SDC class,
use a ethical and moral philosophy while teaching, and show LRE by having
some of our kids mainstreamed through subjects such as math, science,
social studies, and P.E
Competency #3 states that I must implement educational practices
reflective of a clearly articulated and comprehensive personal philosophy of
education. I believe that I have met this competency when I presented the
goals to the parent at my IEP meeting. The student was also at the meeting,

Case 3
so I talked in a way that they would both understand, and feel comfortable to
ask any questions. My personal philosophy includes being aware that people
learn differently, and realizing that parents are the experts of their own
children. At the IEP, I believe I really showed my personal philosophy of
teaching.
This week I plan on completing my CPR and First Aid certification, along
with working towards completing my portfolio.
