Domain 1: Planning and Preparation

The lesson that I chose to analyze is a lesson that was designed and developed for an 8th
grade Language Arts class. The lesson was designed to fit in the middle of a persuasive speech
unit with direct focus on the use of propaganda and notes on giving a speech. The use of
propaganda and the prerequisite knowledge of what propaganda is and how it is used were
incorporated into this lesson plan. This incorporation of prerequisite knowledge of propaganda
meets the standards of Doman 1a: Demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy. Domain
1b: Demonstrating knowledge of students, standard was met by incorporating visual aids into the
lesson. Visual aids of different propaganda techniques were used in the lesson to incorporate and
take into account different learning styles. Students who are visual learners were able to see
propaganda techniques at use in multimedia.
While this lesson was incorporated into a unit on persuasive speeches, specific learning
objectives were set for this lesson. The instructional objective: Students will understand the
term propaganda and be able to use propaganda techniques in their speech was met during
this lesson. This objective meets the standard of Domain 1c: Setting Instructional Outcomes.
When trying to meet the standard of Domain 1d: Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources,
specific attention was made to classroom resources made available by the cooperating teacher. A
worksheet was provided titled, Delivering a Speech, and this worksheet was used to give
students notes on proper speech giving. This worksheet was used in order to meet one of the
learning objectives outlined in the lesson plan. Instructional outcomes were laid out in both the
lesson plan and to the students, and resources were used in order to meet these objectives.

This lesson was designed to give students tools and information that would enhance their
culminating persuasive speeches. The entire lesson plan for this specific lesson meets the
standards of Domain 1e: Designing Coherent Instruction. Within this lesson plan is a clear and
sequenced lesson with each activity building upon the last activity. Proper use of propaganda is
needed to be understood in order to develop an effective persuasive speech. While this particular
lesson plan doesnt include formal assessments, summative assessments are included within the
unit lesson plan. Students final persuasive speeches will be assessed based on a rubric that is
established and shared with the students. Each student understands the areas in which they will
be assessed and students will work towards creating a persuasive speech that meets the learning
goals.
Overall I felt that this lesson was very well planned and executed within the classroom.
The objectives of the lesson were clearly laid out and the students knew what they were expected
to learn from this lesson. Most of this lesson plan centered on providing the students with new
information, but there was great discussion between the students during the lesson. The use of
visual aids enhanced the learning experienced and gave the students a chance to make
connections between new terms and images they have seen in the media. The overall objective of
this lesson was to provide students with the knowledge of how to properly use propaganda in
order to improve their persuasive speeches. Final assessment and self-reflection will be
completed upon quality and effectiveness of the persuasive speeches given by the students.
