Critical Study
Tony DiTerlizzi is identified as a childrens author and an illustrator. He gets his inspiration
from numerous different artists, but mostly nature. He is fascinated by all of the natural
textures, designs, and colors that are in the world around us. He explains that he found his
style by simply exploring as much art as he could; he even found inspiration in natural
history, fashion design, and vintage packaging for products. He has worked in many
different mediums, to name a few: ball-point pen, Holbien Acryla Gouache, and
Prismacolor colored pencils.

Historical Study
DiTerlizzi was born in 1969 in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in a
very art-oriented family and started to draw at a young age. His very
first illustrated book was done in order to earn a Boy Scout badge; it
had a dinosaur theme, which so happened to be his absolute favorite
subject at that age. He completed his college degree in Graphics
and Ad Design in 1992 at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Albrecht Drers Rhinoceros

Drer created this drawing of a rhino solely based on a description he received and
then he also created a woodcut. A rhino had not been seen in Europe for well over a
thousand years, so Drer only had these descriptions to work from. Even though his
work was not a completely accurate representation of a rhino, his woodcut was
shared with many, many European illustrators.
