Technology Distraction VS Academic Performance
Technology has a strong effect on some people, some more than others but mostly
everyone is effected by technology in some way. With abundant technology, you can simply find it
anywhere you go, including the classroom. Easy access to sources such as an iPhone can create
a great disturbance in the class and for the instructor. The following articles talk about and explain
how all of this technology use eventually catches up with the students grades.

This article informs readers about how technology has become such a distraction to so
many of todays population. It tells the stories of the people who have had some issues while
being distracted.
It also provides in depth details about how to overcome distraction from technology.
This source has been very useful because the details within it are all relevant topics that
will be included in paper. All the information in the article is all relevant because it was written in
2015. The sources that come from this article are very reliable because it comes from Harvard
Business Journal. This article is also not biased because it provides different points of view on
each story or the topic.

This article solidifies my argument because it believes that most of the time, technology in
the classroom can damage the learning environment when not used correctly. This article will be
used in the paper by pulling the statistics from it and entering them into the paper and there is
also a bunch of information that could be paraphrased and also entered into the paper.
This article has not changed how I think about but it backs up my ideas behind it.

Duncan, Douglas. Hoekstra, Angel. Wilcox, Bethany. Digital Devices. Astronomy Education
Review. Volume 11.The Issue 1 (2012): ERIC. Web.
October 15th, 2015.

This article introduces the issues of why technology is an issue when it is used in the
classroom, by anyone. This article specifically talks about cellphone use and the direct correlation
between the use of the cellphone and the students grades.
This is a very useful source for the paper because it nails the topic on the head. It includes
great studies with results that justify my argument. This article can not be biased because it has
three authors that seem to think very different but all contain the sane general idea. This article
also includes graphs and other visuals are very helpful because it is easy to interpret the
information that is displayed.
This article will help shape my argument because it goes brings relevant topics up, like
students who take notes on laptops. Then it explains why just the simple action of just taking
notes with a laptop can damage a students attention towards the class. This article has definitely
changed how I think about my topic, it brings a whole other side of the argument in, which is not
only the use of smartphones or laptops for games or social media but also when students even
try to do work on these sources of technology.

Jackson, Lorraine. Is Mobile Technology in the Classroom a Helpful Tool or a

Distraction? The International Journal of Technology, Knowledge & Society Volume 8. Issue 5
(2012): Pages 129-140. Web.
October 15th, 2015.

This article brings up the issues associated with technology in the classroom and also
talks about how both students and instructors feel about it. It displays the debate of both sides,
whether technology builds or destroys the learning environment.

The source is one of the most useful sources because it has a whole page that is dedicated to
the debate of technology in the class, which shows both sides of the argument within it. It also
has great tables that are very easy to interpret the displayed information about the studies that
were conducted for research. It slowly paragraph by paragraph walks the reader through each
step of the study which is very helpful in order fully grasp the idea of the study. The goal of this
source is to inform the reader about the debate of whether or not technology supports or
diminishes the classroom.
This article will fit perfectly in my paper because it unlike my other sources it also talks
about how technology can positively affect a classroom and shows great examples of how it does
so. Those examples and studies will make it into my paper for sure. This article has not changed
my thinking about technology distraction in the classroom because I always saw both sides of the
story.

Pages 241-251. Business Source Complete. Web.

October 15th, 2015.
This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of students using a laptop
during a lecture hall. It talks about all the psychological wok behind doing it and the affects on the
memory doing so.
This source is helpful because it conducts many studies and shows the results in tables
which is very easy to interpret. All the statistics in this article are great evidence that I can use to
back up my argument. This source is very reliable because it comes from a great college up
north, the University of Vermont. The goal of this source is to inform the reader about the dangers
of using a laptop in lecture halls when it comes to the outcome of the grade.
This article fits very well into my paper because it talks about using a laptop which is a
source of technology in the classroom and confirms that it declines the grade of the user. It helps
me shape my article because it narrows down technology to the use of the laptop.

Thornton, Bill. Faires, Alyson. Robbins, Maija. Rollins, Eric. The Mere Presence of a Cell Phone
May be Distracting: Implications for Attention and Task Performance. Zeitschrift fur Socialpsycholgie
Volume 45. Issue 6 (2014): Pages 479-488. PsycARTICLES. Web.
October 15th, 2015.

This article talks about nearly nails my topic, as it discusses how task performance while
in school or at work is affected by technology. It also talks about the focus of the students when
they are trying to do work but at the same time looking at their phone.
This is a very useful source, the authors are very credible, from the University of
Southern Maine, a great school up north. This source seems to be a little biased because it never
really talks about the other side of the argument. Compared to other sources in my bibliography,
this may be one of the more useful sources because it provides great information and statistics.

The goal of this source is to inform the reader about the affects on students grades, when
technology is around.
This source fits into my research when it specifically talks about the laptop usage
because all college courses have students that own laptops and use them in class. Since this
article was written last year, it makes the source that much more credible because it is basically
caught up with todays technology. This article strengthens my argument that technology has a
negative effect on students grades.
