The Specialized Cell

Project

What are specialized cells?

Specialized cells perform unique functions within your body. Different

examples of specialized cells include muscle cells, blood cells, brain cells and
somatic cells. Groups of specialized cells can come together to form different
tissues and in turn to form organs, for example brain cells forming the brain.

Goal of project
You and your partner will be given a slide with a specialized cell. The goal of
this project is to identify the specialized cell in the slide, research information
about the specialized cell and present it to your peers. To guide your
research, focus on the following topics:
- Description of your cell: Provide diagrams, pictures and describe
how your cell is different to the animal cell seen in class physically.
- Function of cell: What job does your cell perform in the human body.
- Comparison to basic animal cell: After you know what makes your
cell unique, compare it to the basic animal cell. Are there organelles
that are not in your cell? Is the shape different?
