My philosophy of nursing has been greatly enhanced through my research efforts and greatly influenced by the Royal College of Nursing Document - ‘Defining Nursing" (2003). | have reconstructed my philosophy of nursing by aligning it with the following guiding principles: Nursing is...the use of clinical judgment in the provision of care to enable people to improve, maintain, or recover health, to cope with health problems, and to achieve the best possible quality of lfe, whatever their disease or disabilty, until death. Along with its defining characteristics of ‘+ The purpose of nursing is to promote health, healing, growth and development, and fo prevent disease, ilness, injury, and disability. When people become ill or disabled, the purpose of nursing is, in addltion to minimizing distress and suffering, to enable people to understand and cope with their disease or disabiity, its treatment, and its consequences. When death is inevitable, the purpose of Nursing is fo maintain the best possible quality of life unt its end, ‘* Nursing interventions are concemed with empowering people, and helping them to achieve, maintain or recover independence. Nursing is an intellectual, physical, emotional ‘and moral process which includes the identification of nursing needs; therapeutic interventions and personal care; information, education, advice and advocaoy; and physical, emotional and spiritual support. In addition to direct patient care, nursing practice includes management, teaching, policy and knowledge development. © The specific domain of nursing is people's unique responses to and experience of health, iliness, frailty, disability and health-related life events in whatever environment or Mesa 5 circumstances they find themselves in. People’s responses may be physiological, social, cultural or spiritual, and are often a combination of al of these. The term “people” includes individuals ofall ages, families and communities, throughout the entire life span. ‘© The focus of nursing is the whole person and the human response rather than a particular aspect ofthe person or particular pathological condition. Caring is central to nursing Knowledge and practice. ‘* Nursing is based on ethical values which respect the dignity, autonomy and uniqueness of human beings, the privileged nurse-patient relationship, and the acceptance of personal accountability for decisions and actions. These values are expressed in written codes of ethics, and supported by a system of professional regulation. ‘+ Nurses work in partnership with patients, their relatives and other carers, and in collaboration with others as members of a mult-discipinary team. Where appropriate they will lead the team, prescribing, diagnosing, treating, delegating, and supervising the work cf others; at other times they will participate under the leadership of others, Al al times, however, they remain personally and professionally accountable for their own decisions and actions. | believe that through adopting these philosophical guiding principles to my nursing practice, it will provide me with a solid foundation to build on, plus help in advancing the profession of nursing through leadership and role modeling activities. | feel it adequately encompasses and harmonizes (although not unique), my values and beliefs, my philosophical orientation to nursing care for persons, families, and communities | serve, in the capacity of a mult-disiplinary health care team member, and upholding my professional and regulatory commitments to the profession of nursing, Bowne 6 Conclusion ‘Through the exercise of identifying and reatfirming my nursing values, helps me to strengthen my resolve to advocate more strongly, stand-up, even make a stand, on issues thal are incongruent with my values and the values set out by the Canadian Nurses’ Code of Ethics. | am sharing my personal philosophy of nursing which | feel adequately reflects my values and beliefs as an advanced practice nurse. | concur with Kouzes and Posner (2003), if people don't believe in the messenger, they won't believe the message.
