10TH HONORS LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION NIGHT READING PROJECT

Night Elie Wiesel

How will this be graded?

Creating a Holocaust Newspaper

Your newspaper/newsletter will be worth
a total of 100 points. Each section is worth
the following:
Newspaper Title (10pts)
Lead Story (20pts)
Editorial (10pts)
Hate Crimes Today
(10pts article and
response)
Never Forget (10pts,
either the illustration or
the rewritten passage)
Where Are They Now?
(10pts)
Faces in the Crowd
(20pts, 10 per character)

The book and the audio are available via the class
website: missfason10lit.weebly.com
We have begun reading Elie Wiesels compelling
memoir, Night, in class. Hopefully you have begun to notice that
it is about much more than a young boys struggle to survive one
of the most horrific events in history. Night details a journey of
survival in which ones faith is tested, innocence lost, and family
and friends are systematically killed. By the end of the memoir,
the narrator has hardened his heart and lost his faith.
Night will stay with you long after you have turned the
final page. In this project, you will share your knowledge and
thoughts on this text.

Make sure to label each section clearly!

In addition, 10 points will be added for total
presentation. Break your newspaper into
columns, label each section, and make it
pleasing to the eye. Just look at the Atlanta
Journal-Constitution for examples.

Plagiarism will NOT be tolerated.

Use MLA format for all citations.

Your project should be a thought-provoking,

creative, and educational one!

When will this be due?

Your one to three page newspaper will be due
upon your return from Thanksgiving Break:
December 2nd (A Day)
and December 3rd (B Day).

You will create a two to three page newspaper/newsletter containing the following labeled sections:
Newspaper Title: name your newspaper so it fits the assignment
Lead Story: a one to two paragraph summary of the novel with an appropriate picture
Editorial: your thoughts on the Holocaust (one to two paragraphs)
Hate Crimes Today: Read the newspaper or newsmagazines (many of which are online) and look for
articles that somehow relate to the unit we are working on: stereotypes, hate crimes, genocide, prejudice.
Find two articles (which you will submit as attachments). You will write a one to two paragraph summary
of each article detailing the 5 Ws and 1 H. The third paragraph in each will connect the news to the
Holocaust in general, or Night in particular. (Additional assistance is attached.)
Where Are They Now: a one paragraph update on Elie Wiesel with accompanying picture
Faces in the Crowd: two paragraphs highlighting two minor characters from the memoir. Explain who
they are, what happened to them and why they are significant to the story (one paragraph per character).
Never Forget: you will create an illustration OR your own version of the Never passage from the text
(see attachment).

Never Forget Passage Project

You will complete one of the following tasks.
Draw
Pick ten words or phrases from the Never passage that you are able to
illustrate or show visual imagery for. Rewrite the passage on a blank sheet of
paper, replacing those ten words or phrases with the visual image. The final
product must be publishable. In other words it should look presentable and
professional.
Write
What will YOU never forget? (It could be a good or a bad memory. It could be a person, place, or event
in your life.)Rewrite the Never passage to tell about your own memory. You must use parallel
structure, which means you will include every piece of punctuation from the original passage, and as
many of the words and phrases as possible. The structure will be exactly the same. Only the topic will
be different. Underline your additions/changes to the original passage.
