Unit
2- Chemistry of Life

BIO.A.2.3.1 Describe the role of an enzyme as a catalyst in regulating a specific

biochemical reaction.

Objective
SWBAT Explain the basic principles
behind enzymes and identify the
substrate, products, active site, and
enzyme in a simple diagram.
SWBAT Identify components of the
human digestion system.
SWBAT Identify several key digestive
enzymes and identify their site of origin,
site of action, their substrates, and their
products.

Essential Question
How do enzymes work in the human body?
How do macromolecules contribute to human
health and body systems?

Answer two questions on the
posed the following question: Do Now.
Some people are what we
call "lactose intolerant." They
cannot digest the sugar
lactose, which is found in
milk and some other dairy
products. However, by taking
a supplement that contains
the enzyme lactase, they
find they can eat dairy
products normally.
Then they will be asked to
write down their responses
to two questions:
1) If you eat milk and cheese
without a problem, should
we expect to find lactase in
your body? Why or why not?
2) Predict what an enzyme
does.
Students should not formally
know what enzymes are, but

my hope is this DO NOW will

introduce them to the idea of
enzymes in digestion, the
idea that humans have
enzymes in their body that
help us break down our food
normally, and give their
prediction about what an
enzyme is. I would be happy
with results such as breaks
things apart or helps us
digest things as we will fine
tune that understanding in
the next phase.

Explain
(Guided
Practice)

I will hand out a Cornell

Notes style handout to the
students (See Appendix A).
As I lecture, I will ask them to
fill in the appropriate
responses in their tables,
and explain I will be
collecting it for a class
participation grade at the
end of the lesson. I will
begin by giving a quick, 3
page slideshow on enzymes.
I was instructed to just give
them an intro to enzymes, so
I wont go into
catabolic/anabolic/inducted
fit here. I will define enzymes
as A type of protein that
speeds up metabolic
reactions without being
created or destroyed. I will
then point out that in
digestion, enzymes are what
helps our bodies break down
complex food (like milk) into
smaller, easier to use
subunits. In digestion, food
enters our bodies are large,
complex molecules that cells
cannot utilize as they are.
Enzymes are employed at all
stages our our digestion
process to break down food
into usable subunits that our
body can process. The next

following on their Cornell
Notes sheets:

2) label substrate, product,
enzyme, and active site on

slide will be a simple

diagram of a substrate
entering an enzymes active
site, being broken into two
products, and released.
We will watch the video
Digestion (2 minutes). [I will
attach it in an email, its on
Teris dropbox and not on
youtube]. It will give the
students a brief taste of the
role of enzymes in digestion
and a quick, engaging
overview of the digestion
system. Also, it shows a real
human digestive system laid
out on a table, which is
engaging and has the gross
factor. Then, I will give
students approx 10 minutes
to read the descriptions of
parts of the digestive system
on the handout and attempt
to match it to the correct
line. I will tell them that they
should read the descriptions
of the body parts and use
their prior knowledge to label
as many parts as possible.
They can work in pairs. I feel
as though many of them
have some kind of
background knowledge on
the basic parts of the
digestive system, and
therefore I want to see what
they know here, especially
since all the parts have
length descriptions under the
diagram. Im sure there are a
few they wont get, but for
the remaining five minutes,
Ill put the diagram up on the
board and will call on
students one at a time to
come up and label one part
they feel confident about.
Eventually, they will have
filled out as much of the
diagram as they can, and I

common digestive enzymes.
Students will fill in the blanks
on table provided to them
on the worksheet as I
lecture.
What will be covered:
Salivary amylase is made in
the salivary glands and used
in the mouth, to break down
carbohydrates (sugars) into
simple sugars.
Pepsin, which is made in the
gastric glands and is used in
the stomach, breaks down
proteins into amino acids.
Bile, which is made in the
liver and used in the small
intestine, is used to break
down fats/lipids into
emulsified fats.
Maltase/Lactase/Sucrase,
which are made and used in
the small intestine, are used
to break down carbohydrates
into simple sugars.
Trypsin/Lipase/Amylase,
which are made in the
pancreas and used in the
small intestine, are used to
break down protines,
fats/lipids, and carbs into
amino acids, glycerol/fatty
acids, and simple sugars.
At the end, I will highlight the
facts that carbs always break
into simple sugars, proteins
always break into amino
acids, and will tell the
students that this will be
talked about more tomorrow.
I will collect their worksheet
