Task: Write and Create an Illustrated Narrative

Think about all the heroes you have encountered in fiction and in real life. Write and create an illustrated narrative (e.g., comic book, graphic story, story board) about an original
hero. Use the Heros Journey archetype to develop, present, sequence, and structure your ideas. Use visual/cinematic techniques to convey a specific and unified perspective
and tone.

Details are strategically

selected to tightly connect the
conflict and character to a
unified perspective. The writer
crafts words to show meanings.
The writer uses imagery to
build a consistent, appropriate
abstract meaning. The writer
carefully crafts visuals to
enhance and further develop
the perspective and tone.
10

9.5

The writer strategically selects

narrative details which engage
and interest a specific
audience. The writer uses the
details to provide relevant
background information,
anticipate readers needs, and
to move the reader to the
intended conclusion.
30

28.5

The narrative is organized with

adherence to the heros journey
archetype (a departure,
initiation, and return). The
writer purposefully crafts other
situational archetypes (quest,
task, ritual, fall, etc.) to reveal a
unified perspective.
10

9.5

The conflict (the journey) and

characterization do not match
the intended perspective
(universal idea or theme) and
tone. OR The perspective
and tone are inconsistent,
leading to a lack of focus in
the narrative.
26.25
24.5

The details provide a clear

understanding of the conflict,
the character, and the
writers perspective. The
writer used words and
created sensory imagery
which help the writer clearly
communicate his or her
intended perspective. The
writer uses appropriate
visuals to support the
perspective of the narrative.
8.5
8

The details are limited or

insufficient in their
description of the conflict and
character or in their support
of the intended perspective.
The words do not clearly
connect to the universal idea.
Visuals are insufficient or
ineffective in their support of
the perspective.

The writer includes narrative

details which are suitable for
the intended audience. The
writer generally meets the
readers needs by providing
sufficient background
information.

The narrative details do not

appeal to the intended
audience as the writer has
mismatched the use of detail
with the audiences needs
and expectations. The writer
may include irrelevant or
inconsistent details.

25.5

24

around a central conflict for a
hero. The writer includes
archetypes (departure,
initiation, return, task, fall,
etc.) to advance the intended
perspective.

17

Details are disconnected,

random, or incomplete.
OR Too many details are
presented, leading to an
unfocused narrative.
Visuals are absent,
irrelevant, or of such poor
quality that they distract
from the narrative

The narrative is organized

chronologically around a
conflict, but the writer does
not accurately or consistently
use the archetype of the
heros journey.

7.5

There is no discernable
attempt to build towards a
perspective or tone. The
narrative lacks coherence
and purpose.

There is little, if any,

awareness of an audience.
The writer fails to develop
the event using narrative
details. OR The writer
uses details
indiscriminately to create
length without
consideration or the
readers needs.
18

15

The narrative does not

have a single conflict. OR
There is little, if any,
attempt at organization.
