Lesson

Description

## Students work in teams to collect and analyze

data. They plot the data on a graph, create a
linear equation to model the graph and answer
questions based on their model.

## Students will break into their teams and

brainstorm to come up with as many different
function families as possible. They will group
and sketch the functions they come up with;
students can utilize graphing calculators, the
internet, and textbooks.
Students will work individually on a
graphs, parent function, and family. Students
will also become familiar with their graphing
calculators.
Students will work either individually or in their
teams on a worksheet on shifting and
stretching functions. At the end of class I will
ask specific questions to assess learning;
without a calculator.

## Students will work individually on a worksheet

on day two of shifting and stretching functions.
The worksheet will be collected and graded for
completeness and correctness. During class I
will be available for a tutoring station to
assist as needed while keeping an eye on the
class.

## This lesson and the next are a 2 day series.

Today students will start a discovery worksheet
on piecewise functions, but will probably need
to finish it tomorrow. Students who finish
quickly will be given a more interesting and
more difficult problem to work on. Students
will work individually but be encouraged to
utilize the help of teammates.

## Day 2 on piecewise functions. Students will

finish the worksheet and we will go over the
more difficult extended problem as a class. As
students finish sections of the worksheet, they
will tell me and I will check their work to ensure
understanding as they go.

## I will explain inverses and allow a few minutes

to work on the worksheet. We will go over any
questions and then I will discuss basic function
operations and allow time for teams to solve
the problems. We will then discuss any
questions.

Objective
SWBAT collect and
analyze data using a
spyglass and then
review linear concepts to
model this data.
SWBAT graph a variety of
functions using
technology, organize the
functions into families,
and identify some basic
functions by name.
SWBAT sketch and name
the graphs of basic parent
functions.
SWBAT sketch a graph as
a transformation from a
parent graph and identify
the equation of a basic
function that has been
shifted.
SWBAT use horizontal
and vertical shifts and
stretching to sketch the
graphs of functions and
identify key features of
the graphs and how
transformations change
these key features.
SWBAT evaluate a
piecewise function, graph
piecewise and step
functions, and write the
equation of the graph of a
piecewise or step
function.
SWBAT evaluate a
piecewise function, graph
piecewise and step
functions, and write the
equation of the graph of a
piecewise or step
function.
SWBAT combine
functions using a variety
of operations, including
compositions and
inverses, and will review
inverse functions and
function notation.

10

## We will begin with a function relay game (2 or 3

rounds, depending on time). Students will then
work in their teams on the discovery worksheet
on composition of functions in real life.
Students will present their findings at the end
of class.
Day 1 of 2 on the range of inverses. Discuss new
vocabulary words and implementation
questions. Students will work in teams to
complete the worksheet on finding inverses
that are not functions. Then students will work
in teams on the worksheet about restricting the
range to make those inverses functions.
Students are finding the inverses intuitively
right now, tomorrow is algebraically.

SWBAT compose
functions and interpret
the meaning of the
compositions in context.

## SWBAT generate the

graph of an inverse by
reflecting across y=x and
restrict the range of an
inverse to make it a
function.

11

## Day 2 on inverses. I will review what we learned

yesterday to ensure everyone is on the same
page. Then we will learn how to verify inverses
using composition. Students will work in pairs

## Today in class we will play Jeopardy as a review

game. Students break into teams (assigned or
chosen) and points are only awarded if every
team member helps or works on the problem.

## This day is built into the lesson in case one of

the above lessons runs long, but in case it is not
needed as an extra, it is a review day. If
students are feeling comfortable with the
material, I will hand out the test review
worksheet for them to begin in class and finish
for homework.

14

## We will go over the test review and cover any

questions. This should take the entire period.
We will begin by having teammates work
together to discuss answers and the second
half of class I will take questions and do
problems on the board.
