Chapter 10
Classroom Management
Classroom management is a way for teachers to help students understand appropriate
behavior. In helps to ensure that students are participating, focused, and learning in class, as they
are on task and using positive behavior. Teachers can learn how to arrange their classroom to
promote maximum engagement in the class. They can also use teaching strategies to help
promote as much learning as possible in all the students, along with preparing rules, procedures,
and guidelines a head of time so students know what is expected of them (Kauchak, 2014, p.
314). Having a classroom management plan is important because it helps improve student
behavior and keep the class focused on what is being taught. It will help the teacher and student
develop a good relationship, have the kids be on task, participating, and excited and interested
about what they are learning. Classroom management is a must in providing a safe learning
environment, free of distractions.
The best way to motivate your students in the classroom is by promoting positive
behavior and giving praise or rewards to reinforce this behavior until theyve got it down. It
would still be a good idea to give praise and let them know you appreciate their positive
behavior. Teachers should consider the students needs when teaching, but they should also push
their students and encourage them to do their best by letting them know they care and that they
are here for their students. Students who feel like their teacher cares about them and their
learning will be less likely to misbehave (Kauchak, 2014, p. 319). Teachers should make the

lessons fun and exciting that the students are wanting to learn and are learning while being
focused on the lesson or their assignments.
One big thing that teachers need to make sure they are doing with classroom management
is making their classroom welcoming and free from distractions for everyone. Making sure that
all the diversity and all the needs of the students are being met, because that plays a big role in
how students will behave. Each year the classrooms become more and more diverse. Classroom
management strategies will enhance the quality of your classroom and it will also help to get rid
of any discipline issues for the teacher because the students will feel welcomed, safe, cared for
and they will be ready to learn. Letting your students know you care about them and their
learning is huge and will help motivate them to keep a positive behavior and participate in class.
It holds them to higher standards (Kauchak, 2014, p. 315). It can also help the teacher get to
know the students better by not having to discipline as much and they will have more time to
learn. Another good way for teachers to get to know their students and maintain effective
classroom management is by involving parents and letting them know about their childrens
progress. This will help the children maintain and keep more positive behaviors, and have higher
long term achievement (Kauchak, 2014, p. 321).
My philosophy will help me manage my classrooms and help with positive behavior,
which will give my students more time to learn and maximize their potential. As a teacher, I will
need to realize that I may have to adjust my classroom management depending on the students I
have in my class because all students are different. My goal for my students is to maintain
positive behavior, keep my students safe, and focus on their learning. If any of my students seem
to be struggling, I will do everything I can to help that student and change my classroom
management if needed. I want all my students to succeed and do their best.
