1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
Make your own hours, team player (working Christmas and weekends etc), went to med school but realizes that
he is not an equal with the doctors, (as an anesthesiologist he doesnt bring pt in which means he has less favor
with the hospital) No one told him that the surgeons would have more favor.

2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
(educational level and requirements)
Current: Doctorate m.d. and post-doctorate- anesthesia residency. Bachelors in zoology.
CE- 24 hrs per year required by texas medical board (could be peer review journals, CME, various
options)

3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
Arrives at 6:30 am, first thing: pt. 50 surgeries scheduled per day, but could be twelve starting at 7 so he and his
colleagues will do pre-op evaluations of 3 or so pt in a row. The nurse anesthetist will do most of the work for
anesthesia afterwards, but he is available for any critical points. Throughout the day he would give the nurse
breaks, but for the most part it is the anesthetist. Will keep doing the scheduled cases, and then he usually gets off
around 3 or 4 pm.

Revised Fall 2013

4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?
(job security)
Based on experience he has had some experience losing contracts, even where he works now. But the hospital
could at any moment, decide that they dont want to work with the anesthesia company. But if you keep a clean
license you can always find another job. Changes up what anesthesia group he works with and can get re hired.
He will always be able to find a decent job but there are worries that they will start getting paid less. Medicare
pays less typically for instance. Politicians often push for a single payment health system, which could drastically
drop the salaries of all doctors. Single payer would be devastating to the medical field.
5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?
(salary)
Best guess $280,000 on average annually.

6. What potential for growth is there in your field?

(growth potential)
He has always found work, and you could add on some extra jobs/work more hours a week, if you want more
money. Could move to urgent care centers for example, or go to LTACH. Could become an owner of a surgery
center, which would bring in profit.

7. Would the location of the hospital affect your job security?

If you were to be in a small town, if for whatever reason things didnt work out (bad relations) then it might be
hard to just jump to another hospital. Big cities have hundreds of hospitals that you could potentially move too if
need be.

8. About how many hours, would you say, go into your typical work week? (on the clock and working
from home: if applicable)
Very little work goes home except for the annual 24 hours CE credits. On average he works about 75 hours a
week, all being at Memorial, and then another 75 hours at Cornerstone. His contract isnt specific but he needs to
work his part at memorial, but at cornerstone he works however much he wants/makes his own hours.

9. What benefits does the hospital you work at provide that made you choose to work there?
The hospital doesnt pay him, its the anesthesia group. The group pays for his health insurance, they give him
paid vacation, and a 401k retirement plan with a small match (3%).

Revised Fall 2013

10. Are you staying where you are or are you going to try to advance in your field (if applicable)?

There are some other sub-specialties (chronic pain management etc.), but he doesnt plan to do that
anytime soon. Another way to advance, he could potentially become a teacher/professor, or do research,
or get politically involved with anesthesia (post journals) but he doesnt plan on doing that either.
