The Company Man

Reflecting on what you know
When I finished my career in Communications, I worked without
schedule. I knew what time I had to be at work but never knew the
time to go back home. I worked for a TV Station as a producer
assistant, later on a Director Assistant and few years after, I was
promoted as a Producer Associate. The fact that I didnt have schedule
never bothered me. I was doing what I liked to do, what I was prepared
to perform and everything was perfect. Few years later I got married
and 2 years after I had my first daughter. My story changed, my
priority was to spend time with my baby and my family. I couldnt keep
that routine so I had to go to a different field in my career.
It wasnt that excited but at least I had the opportunity to enjoy my
maternity and continue growing in my career.

Questions for Study and Discussion

1- After readings Goodmans essay, how would you define company
man? As you define the term, consider what such a man is not,

as well as what he is. Is company man synonymous with

workaholic? Explain.
It is an essay that communicates a very important message
about a person who gave his life to only work. He is an example
of the person you dont one to become. I can assure that
company man and workaholic has the same definition.
2- In paragraph 4, Goodman says that Phil worked like the
Important People. How would you define that term in the
context of the essay?
Goodman described clearly how an important people work more
that 40 hours a week, 6 days per week and never takes days off
as the rest of the employees. This is the kind of person that
never have extracurricular interests.

3- What is Goodmans purpose? Explain

I think her purpose is to open the eyes of people who live to work
only and dont take good care of his family. She wanted her
readers to understand how important is the family, and the
quality time we spend with them. Do not let the time go by only
without give and receive love. Everybody can be replaced in a
job. Nobody can be replaced in a family.
4- Do you think Goodmans unemotional tone is appropriate for her
purpose? Why or why not?

Yes I do. She was trying to emphasize that tone to catch the
attention of the reader in order to make people understand how
important is her message.
5- Goodman repeats the day and time that Phil worked himself to
death. Why are those facts important enough to bear repetition?
What about them is ironic?
Those facts are important because it makes you realized that the
same time he died was the same time that he was usually
working. He didnt enjoy his life either his death. It is ironic
because he passed away on a day he supposed to be off, but
actually he was never off, even at home.
