IG Image and Complaints

An IG report is intended to promote positive change. If the unit doesnt believe the IG
team is credible, there will be much more resistance to the contents of the report than if they
view the IG team as a competent, credible source. You only have one chance to make that first
impression with the inspected organization. Your image will either enhance or undermine your
credibility as an IG inspector.
You should be the epitome of professionalism. Be polite and professional; make sure
you extend all appropriate customs and courtesies. Theres more at stake than just your own
reputation, the reputation of the entire inspection team and system is on the line. It only takes one
incident by one inspector to destroy the credibility of the team.
A big inspection team may be 100 personnel. An average AF wing has thousands of
people in it. There are more eyes on you than you have them. You are in a glass house, whether
you like it or not! You are constantly being evaluated by unit personnel.

Take the time to insure your uniform is immaculate and IAW dress and personal
appearance guidance. Never say or do anything that even hints at unprofessional behavior or
attitudes.
IG Complaints
Most AF members dont know that the IG is broken into several major functional areas
and that complaints and inspections are two separate and distinct activities. Most members just
know that you complain to the IG when you have a problem.
As an inspector, you are not trained, do not have the time and do not have authority to
handle an IG complaint. The table on the next page shows the differences between the two
activities.

If someone approaches you with an IG complaint, dont shut them down right away.
Remember someone with an IG complaint is probably under some level of emotional stress and
needs to be treated with some sensitivity. Offer to help get them in touch with the right IG point
of contact (Wing/base IG). Some MAJCOM inspections teams will bring a qualified complaints
person with the team. You may also refer them to this person if your MAJCOM uses that
practice. Make sure to notify your team chief or functional lead and dont share the information
about the complaint with anyone who doesnt have a need to know.
