Essential Question: Are generic or name brand drugs better for you in long term effects?
Working thesis: Name brand drugs are better for use wise, generic are better cost wise.
Refined Thesis: Generic drugs do not have to be FDA approved and can turn out to be dangerous
or inefficient, while generics can be cost efficient.
"Chapter 1: What Are Over-The-Counter Drugs?." Abusing Over-the-Counter Drugs: Illicit Uses
for Everyday Drugs. 8. n.p.: Mason Crest Publishers, 2008. Points of View Reference
Center. Web. 17 Sept. 2015.
Over the counter drugs are pharmaceutical drugs that do not require a doctors
prescription to be bought/ used. Generic drugs are based on the chemical structure, while brand
name drug companies focus on people knowing their names and marketing techniques. DXM is a
synthetic substance, which can be very dangerous and deadly because it has a short history. This
article supports my thesis by stating how dangerous generic drugs can be.

Drug Product Selection Laws On Statin Patient Generic-To-Branded Drug SwitchBacks." American Economist 60.1 (2015): 26-51. Business Source Premier. Web. 17
Sept. 2015.
This article states, Health policy recommendations by the CQC of the ACCF caution
about the consequences to patients from generic therapeutic interchange and substitution.
Switching to generic can be dangerous because the two different drugs could have different side
effects or different chemical makeups. Unless the doctor specifically writes a prescription for the
generic brand patient consent can be used to pick generic or name brand. While generic brands
can be less costly, they can also be more dangerous or less effective. Some pharmacist will give
patients generic to cut down on costs even if that is not what is asked of them. This article will
support my thesis by stating generics can be cheaper, but also less effective.

Generic Latanoprost May Improve Compliance, for Example, but Does the Generic
'Equivalent' Work as Well as the Brand-Name Drug?." Review of Optometry 2012: 68.
Academic OneFile. Web. 17 Sept. 2015.
This article states, Companies merely have to show the EDA that their drugs are
bioequivalent to the brand. Generic drugs only have to reach relatively the same concentration
level, look, and purpose. This is usually achieved by testing to make sure the active ingredients
into the bloodstream at the same time the branded drug does. Generic drugs also bring a huge
cost saving to the health care world. If medicines are manufactured overseas, they might now be

watched well and you might not get what is thought to come from generics. A firms application
to the FDA must enlist a full description of the manufacturing facilities, packaging, and testing.
This article will support my thesis by telling how generics really do not have to be tested before
being used.

"Going Generic: Understanding Issues Related To Generic Medications In Ophthalmology."

Ophthalmology Times (2015): 4. MasterFILE Premier. Web. 17 Sept. 2015.
This article states, The drive for going generic is largely fueled by cost. According to
national prescription audits done by IMS Health, the use of generic drugs resulted in the
estimated savings of $156 Billion in 2009 and $239 billion in 2013 to the United States Health
Care System. Generic drug companies only have to show that their drug is bioequivalent to the
brand name. Also before approving generics, the FDA checks the absorption of the drug product
into the packaging, leaching of impurities out of the packaging into the product, water loss, and
drop size of the product. This article will support my thesis by talking about the cost.

Brand Name Drugs And Non-Proprietary (Generic) Name Drugs." Frontiers In
Pharmacology 4.(2013): 113. MEDLINE. Web. 17 Sept. 2015.
This article states Non-proprietary name is the name for the active ingredient in the medicine
that is decided by an expert committee and is understood internationally. The article also says,
Thus, paracetamol/acetaminophen is the nonproprietary name (generic name) while
Crocin/Metacin/Meftal/Tylenol etc.. are brand names. If the name brand drug is not available, the

pharmacist will go ahead and recommend generic. It is extremely easy for pharmacist to figure
out a substitution drug if the name brand prescription recommended is not available.
This article states how easy it is for pharmacist to get patients to take generics even if that is not
the best solution.

Physicochemical And Pharmaceutical Properties Of Brand-Name And Generic
Ketoprofen Tapes." Drug Discoveries & Therapeutics 9.3 (2015): 229-233. Academic
Search Complete. Web. 17 Sept. 2015.
This article states, When selecting generic drugs, information on differences in the
efficacy and quality between brand name and generic products is necessary. Scientist conducted
test on the generic and name brand to which product worked better of this tape. Scientist used
artificial skin to measure the difference in the peel forces of the two tapes. Both the generic and
the name brand peel force were low. The only difference in the two was the p.h levels and those
were lower in the generic brands. The name brand tapes were more flexible and more stretchable
compared to the generic brands. This article proves my thesis by telling the name brand tapes
worked better than the generic brands did.
