Indonesia-Australia relation: It takes two to tango
We've just had a week of
whinges, as Australians call
complaints. Politicians,
academics and the commentariat
have been bemoaning the state
of Indonesian-Australian
relationships.
There's been plenty of basa-
basi but little frank talk, though to
be fair Ati Nurbaiti (The Jakarta
Post, March 13) identified the
flawed rule of law as an
impediment.
Eavesdrop any group of
Ockers at Ngurah Rai waiting for
their Airbus and the key talking
points are personal encounters
with petty corruption and
cheating.
These experiences stick,
eclipsing memories of a
generous culture, cheap food and
great bargains. It's not a good
look.
Nor is Australia's
maintenance of travel warnings.
Anyone going overseas has to
watch their wallet.

and keep your nose out of demos

mega business in Australia and the
rest of the West. It's powered by
agents who really know their stuff.
They're licensed, work in
comfortable brightly lit offices in
shopping malls and
enthusiastically offer holidays
almost everywhere in the world.
Want to compare prices?
Have a big glossy brochure in
flawless English, thick with details
of flights and special hotel deals.
Of course. Morocco or
Manhattan? The Eiffel Tower or the
Pyramids? No problems. How
about a cruise? North, South, East
or West? You choose.
Want a recommendation? Ask
anything, the chances are the staff
have been there and can give you
the good oil, which in Ozspeak
means the right information.
Compare this with the travel
agents in Indonesia. The ones I
have to deal with in Indonesia work
in musty rooms with 15 watt
lighting. They print out schedules
using machines with so little ink it's
almost impossible to read dates
and times.
So no wonder our favorite
consultant missed her freebie flight

lack of money, and recent

forgiveness for his error, quickly
received several thousand
gracious votes of support.

done another Nyepi and come

magnificent thing to do for the
island. This reconfirms my love for
this culture and its people. It's too
bad the rest of the world doesn't do
something similar. Imagine how
the skies around the world would
look after just one day of nothing. I
think we have earth hour on the
27th of this month which means
everyone should keep the use of
lights to a minimum, for an hour at
least, on the day. I took the
opportunity to gaze up at the stars
while the lights were out and “boy
oh boy” were they bright. I didn't
really understand how much the
light pollution stopped us from
seeing them.

you imagine what the beach would
be like if you had it completely to

Ok Thursday is the big day folks with
the official start to the A.F.L season, I
know where I'm gonna be at about
4pm and I know what I'll be drinking
as well. Should be a cracker year
based on the N.A.B prelim rounds.
You should all be sure to have your
tips in before the first bounce to earn
yourself a chance at a big win for the
end of the season. I usually get into
the tipping for the party at the end of
the year. Last year it was so good I
can't remember it, lol lol.

Seeing is believing: scientists make invisibility
It sounds like something out
of a Harry Potter book, but
German scientists say they
have created a three-
dimensional invisibility
cloak.
The researchers have been
able to hide a bump on a gold
plate using "metamaterials",
making the gold plate appear flat
in infrared light.

led the research, which was
published Friday in the journal
Science.
"You could imagine you have
a flat gold mirror and you could
put an object on that mirror," he
said.
"An observer could
immediately tell that there is a
bump there and that there is an
object hidden.
"Now we can put the three-
dimensional carpet cloak on top
of that bump so that the bump
disappears - so the observer
would again see a flat mirror."
The scientists have created
what is known as a metamaterial,
which is used to cloak an object.
These metamaterials are
tailored to change the way light
bounces off something, making
light bend around an object to
render it invisible.
Dr David Powell from the
Centre for Linear Physics at the
Australian National University
says the metamaterials offer the
flexibility needed to do this.
"One of the applications of
metamaterials is this cloaking,"
he said.
"And the idea is that because
you have these extra degrees of
freedom with these
metamaterials that you just can't
get with normal materials, you
can bend light in these weird and
wonderful ways."

A 29-year-old tourist from

five days in custody after

A GIRL aged 14 has been working
as a lap dancer in a strip club, it
has been claimed.
Undercover reporters from The
Sun witnessed the schoolgirl gyrate
for a group of baying men until 3am
and swig 12 bottles of strong vodka
alcopops between dances.
Her mother thought she was at a
sleepover with a friend.
The girl performed pole dances
dressed in a black basque, black
stockings and suspenders.
She also stripped to dance
naked behind a translucent glass
screen.
And at one point the girl took a
punter aged in his mid-30s to a tiny
curtained-off cubicle for a "private
dance".
She told a reporter at the sleazy
Shadow Lounge in Weston-super-
Mare, England, that she was aged
18 and added: "I'm p***** out of my

advertises for dancers, is run by
Spanish-born Jesus Rodriguez-
Casas, known as JR.
He claimed the 14-year-old
duped him, saying she was 18, and
failed to return when he asked for
better ID.
He also claimed the girl was
"practising" and did the private dance
for a friend. JR insisted: "I would

It is illegal for anyone under 18

The girls' mothers were
horrified when told. The mother of
the naked dancer said: "It's
disgusting, I thought she was out
