Analysis of Authors Craft: Psalm 9
In the King James Version of Psalm 9, the speaker praises the Lord and all the good that
he does. He goes on stating what the Lord has done for his people and why everyone should be
thankful for him. In the Psalm, it talks about what his people have experienced and what he does
to provide for them, which gives them reasoning to celebrating him. The Lord has destroyed
whatever bad comes in their way along with established his throne. He is there whenever help is
needed and preforms marvelous works. All throughout the Psalm his marvelous works are
listed and praised. The use of diction, imagery, and syntax express how truly great the Lord is to
his people.
The author uses diction to reveal the Lords works. He uses praiseful words and phrases
within the Psalm, like The Lord reigns forever; (7). This shows the power The Lord has and
how he will be glorified by his people for as long as they live. Another example of devotion is
when the author uses words like, rejoice (14), stronghold (9), and righteous (4). These
words define how the Lords role influences his followers lives. He is seen as the most
important figure, the rock of their existence. Everything that the Lord does is viewed as perfect
and he always make the right decisions. The Lord is celebrated in any religion this psalm is used
in. Additionally, all of the diction that is used to describe the Lord is optimistic, which creates a
positive connotation. It says, Those who know your name trust in you,/ for you, Lord, have
never forsaken/ those who seek you. This reveals how much trust is put into the Lord because

he has never abandoned or forgotten one of his believers. They are able to prove that through the
positive diction that praised the Lord throughout Psalm 9.
The next way that the Lords greatness is displayed is through imagery. Throughout the
text the author uses imagery to display the works the Lord has to offer. The main way it is
explored is by the use of abstract imagery. For example, Endless ruin has overtaken my
enemies, you have uprooted their cities; even the memory of them has perished. (Psalm 9:6)
This visualizes how God gets rid of all evil. The enemies that is destroyed is the evils that take
place in your life and the city is the disadvantages that come with it. This is abstract imagery
because it can be interpreted in different ways. For example, everyone has different problems in
their life which is why the enemies can be envisioned in their own way. Also, concreate imagery
is used as well in this psalm. The Lord reigns forever;/ he has established his throne for/
judgement. (Psalm 9:7). This means that the Lord will forever have his throne. This is concrete
imagery because it is direct in the length of the Lords power and what he has already established
for himself. It does not give room for people to interpret this differently since it is so
straightforward with its meaning.
The last way the works of the Lord is proven is through repetition. Within the psalm, the
Lord is reoccurring. This shows the importance of the Lord and how he is the main focus of the
religion. Another example of repetition is of the word praise. Praise is used throughout the psalm
in many different sentences. This shows how the deeds of the Lord are praised and glorified.
Also, it shows how his followers respect all that he does for them.
To conclude, Psalm 9 focuses on how important it is to praise the Lord and the deeds that
he does. The psalm expresses this through the diction, which is positive connotation.

Furthermore it uses imagery to provide examples of the good the Lord does for his people.
Lastly, repetition is used to accentuate his importance and how he should be praised.
