How to Conduct a Medical Examination

Follow the steps below to conduct your medical examinations. During the exams, do not
speak in English. Use gibberish or another language, if you speak one. Also, do not touch the
Immigrants! Instead, use hand gestures to model what you want them to do.
Step 1 Conduct the following checks as quickly as possible. Remember, you have hundreds
of immigrants to examine every day.

Check for limp: One at a time, have Immigrants stand on the X on the floor and then walk
toward you. Watch carefully to check for a limp. If you see a limp, write the letter L (for
lame) on a sticky note and stick it to the Immigrants back. (One or two Immigrants have
been instructed to walk with a limp, so look for them.)
Check for skin disease: Have Immigrants show you the fronts and backs of their hands.
Look for any signs of skin disease.
Check for trachoma (eye disease): Have Immigrants use their index fingers and thumbs to
open their eyes as wide as possible. Look for any signs of trachoma, a highly contagious
eye infection.
Check for tuberculosis: Have Immigrants take two slow, deep breaths. Listen for coughing or rattling in the chest. If you hear anything, write the letter T (for tuberculosis) on
a sticky note and stick it to the Immigrants back. (One or two Immigrants have been
instructed to cough when breathing deeply, so look for them.)
Step 2 Direct Immigrants who pass the medical exam to have a seat in the Legal Inspection
Area.
Step 3 Send Immigrants you have marked with an L or a T to sit in the Medical Quarantine
Area.

How to Conduct a Legal Inspection

Follow the steps below to conduct your legal inspections. If you are the only Inspector at this
station, you will need to speak to the Immigrants in English. If you have a Translator, then
ask the questions in gibberish (or another language) and have your Translator repeat them in
English.
Step 1 Randomly call up Immigrants one at a timeby their number, not their name. Use
the list below to check off Immigrants as you call them up. (The numbers 1 to 4 are missing because they represent the first- and second-class passengers, who have already passed
through to the Ferryboat Waiting Room.)

Step 2 Have each Immigrant hand you his or her card. In a loud, clear voice, ask the
Immigrant the four questions above the line and one of the questions below the line.
What is your name?
What country did you come from?
How old are you?
Why are you immigrating?
Do you have a job waiting for you? (Immigrants should answer no. If not, send them to
the Legal Detention Area immediately.)
Did you pay for your passage? (Immigrants should answer yes. If not, send them to the
Legal Detention Area immediately.)
Is anyone meeting you? (Young women should answer yes. If not, send them to the Legal
Detention Area immediately. For everyone else, the answer doesnt matter.)
Have you ever been in prison? (Immigrants should answer no. If not, send them to the
Legal Detention Area immediately.)
Can you read and write in your native language? (Immigrants should answer yes. If not,
send them to the Legal Detention Area immediately.)
Step 3 For Immigrants who answer all five questions correctly, dramatically stamp their
role card, return it to them, and send them to the Ferryboat Waiting Room.

Immigrants had very different experiences at Ellis Island. For some, it was a joyous time.
