0 DISCUSSION

The purpose of the experiment was to demonstrate the use of extended surface to
improve heat transfer from the surface and to determine the temperature distribution along an
extended surface. The theory of scheme is in free convection small movement of air
generated by the heat limits the transfer rate from the surface. More heat is transferred if the
air velocity is increased over the heated surface.
This process is assisting the movement of air over the heated surface is called forced
convection. Therefore, a heated surface experiencing forced convection will have a lower
surface temperature than that of the same surface in free convection for the same power input.
The experiment was began with using a flat plate heat exchange.
Based on given procedures, the surface temperature recorded when air velocity 0.0
m/s was 60.3 0C. When the air velocity increased to 1.0 m/s, the recorded surface temperature
was 56.3 0C. When air velocity increased to 1.5 m/s, the recorded surface temperature was
52.9 0C.
Then, the flat plate heat exchange was changed with a finned plate heat exchange.
Based on given procedures, the surface temperature recorded when air velocity 0.0 m/s when
47.3 0C. When the air velocity increased to 1.0 m/s, the recorded surface temperature drop to
29.8 0C. When air velocity increased to 1.5 m/s, the recorded surface temperature drop to 17.7
0
C.
From the graph obtained, it can be concluded that the larger surface area loss heat
faster than the smaller surface area. Based on theory, the results obtained prove it. There were
few possible errors. Firstly, when the plate was not put and lock tightly on the duct, air can
flow out from it. Thus, air velocity supplied excess and make the reading become not
accurate at all. Then, improper instalment of wire could produce insignificant errors such as
negative reading.
