The American policy of Containment in the period 1950 1975 was a success.

1. Prepare:
Students are organized into groups of four. One group has studied one side of the
controversy, while the other group has studied an opposing view. Groups have read
the background material and identify facts and arguments that support their
assigned position.
2. Present:
2 speakers from the Proposition will begin by advocating their positions. (5 mins
max)
Opposition make notes and ask questions about information they dont
understand (see handout). (5 mins max)
3. Repeat:
Repeat the above with the Opposition advocating their positions and Proposition
making notes and clarifying doubts
Rules:
Hear all sides equally and speak one at a time.
Back up opinions with clear reasons.
Opposition: Listen well enough, be sure that you understand proposition,
asking clarifying questions as necessary.

4. Reverse:
Groups reverse positions. The remaining 2 speakers from the Proposition use
their notes and what they learned from the opposition to make a presentation
demonstrating their understanding of the opposing view. (5 mins max)
This will be followed by the opposition doing the same. (5 min max)
5. Consensus-Building
Abandon your roles.
Forge a position in your respective group. Feel free to change your mind.
See if you can come to consensus on this issue, or at least justify the
disagreement, using supporting evidence.
Students report out on their groups decision.
