Lindsey Caggiano
CSL 630
Fall 2015
NAME: Lindsey Caggiano
LESSON TOPIC: A Long Walk to Water (Grade 6 Lesson)
RATIONALE:
Prior to this lesson, students will have read A Long Walk to Water both in class and
outside of class. In addition, students will have watched the documentary, 60
Minutes: Lost Boys of Sudan 12 Years Later. This documentary was chosen because
the lost boys went through the same experience Salva did in Sudan. It functions as
a follow up with the text, because students are able to see what men like Salva are
up to and how life is in the newly formed country in South Sudan.
COMMON CORE STANDARD(S):
CCIT.6.3 Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced,
illustrated, and elaborated in a text (e.g., through examples or anecdotes).
OBJECTIVE: (The student will be able to.)
TSWBAT analyze the growth of Salvas character throughout A Long Walk to
Water.
ACADEMIC LANGUAGE:
Anchor chart, Buncee, Animoto, introduced, illustrated, elaborated, analyze, assess,
compare, create, impact, text evidence, cite, illustrate.
MOTIVATION OR ANTICIPATORY SET:
Students will create a survival anchor chart for Salva. This will allow for students to
demonstrate their thinking and prepare for the developmental and closing activities.
By creating a survival anchor chart for Salva, students are engaged with the content
and need to analyze, reflect, and hypothesize the text in order for Salva to survive
the Sudanese civil war and his journey.
Student Directions: Create a survival anchor chart for Salva. Make sure to
apply survival concepts specific to Salvas situation. Use A Long Walk to
Water and 60 Minutes: Lost Boys to help you design the survival anchor chart
regarding the Civil War in Sudan.
BRIEF PROCEDURE:
Developmental Activity: Students will create a Buncee for Salva from A Long
Walk to Water. Students will create three slides on half of the chapters from the text.
Each slide will cover three chapters each. Students are given the option to pick
three slides out of the six listed. This allows for differentiation, because some slides
contain more of the higher levels for depth of knowledge, whereas other slides
contain lower levels for the depth of knowledge. This is especially helpful for special
education students and ENL students. Students also have the option of creating
more than three slides which is good for more advanced students who need a
challenge in the classroom. For ENL students, they can create their slides in their
native language first and then translate it into English. This allows for the students
to fully express their thought process, and not have a hindered learning experience

due to a language barrier. Below contains the student directions and description for
each slide. Each slide focuses on the development of Salvas character throughout
the text and requires the student to demonstrate how Salva grows throughout A
Long Walk to Water.
Student Description: Create a Buncee for the elaboration of Salvas character
from A Long Walk to Water. Pick three slides to create out of the six slides
listed below. If you would like to create more than three slides, you may do
so. While you are making your slides, keep in mind how Salva and certain
events in the text are introduced to the reader and how they elaborate
throughout the story.
Slide 1: Chapters 1-3
Within this slide, analyze how the character is introduced in the story by the
author. Recall elements of Salvas early life. Describe the impact of Sudans
Civil War on Salvas life. Make sure to use text evidence.
Slide 2: Chapters 4-6
Within this slide, describe how Salvas character is changing and elaborating
throughout his journey. Assess the impact Marial and Salvas uncle have on
Salvas journey. Compare their relationships. Make sure to use text evidence
and draw inferences.
Slide 3: Chapters 7-9
Within this slide, compare Salvas old life with his new life. How has his
former life influenced his new life? Illustrate how Salvas uncle has helped
Salva on the journey. Make sure to use text evidence.
Slide 4: Chapters 10-12
Explain how the death of Salvas uncle impacts Salvas journey. Compare
Salvas previous struggles with his new struggles on his journey. Make sure to
use text evidence.
Slide 5: Chapters 13-15
Assess the impact of crossing the Gilo River on Salvas character. In your
opinion, did this lead to Salva becoming a leader? Did these experiences
prepare him for America? Explain using text evidence.
Slide 6: Chapters 16-18
Assess the impact of Salvas new life in America on his character. How did it
help him grow? How has his water organization impacted Sudan? Make sure
to use text evidence.
Closing Activity: Students will be creating an Animoto which will summarize the
growth of Salvas character throughout A Long Walk to Water. This allows for
students to express their thoughts using technology as well as incorporating images
and music to express their ideas. This activity can be modified for special education
or ENL students by allowing them to supplement text with images, quotes, videos,
and any other forms of text necessary to express their ideas.
Student Directions: Using text evidence, create an Animoto on the growth of
Salvas character throughout A Long Walk to Water. You may include pictures,

songs, video, etc. to help elaborate on the growth of Salva throughout the
text. Use the organizer below to help create your animoto.
MATERIALS USED:
Computer, Buncee, Animoto, Construction Paper (for survival anchor chart), A Long
Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, 60 Minutes Lost Boys Documentary.
TECHNOLOGY COMPONENT (IF APPLICABLE):
Buncee
Animoto
ASSESSMENT OF COMMON CORE STANDARD(S):
CCIT.6.3 Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced,
illustrated, and elaborated in a text (e.g., through examples or anecdotes).
Students are required to analyze in detail using text evidence the growth of Salva
throughout A Long Walk to Water through the creation of a Buncee and Animoto
video. Each slide in the presentation requires the students to cite text evidence.
Students are also required to assess the impacts of environmental factors such as
the Sudanese civil war, crossing the Gilo River, and living in refugee camps on the
growth of Salvas character.
