TRADE WITH OTHER

CIVILIZATIONS
The Impact of Contact

RESULTS FROM THE CRUSADES

Contact with Muslim civilizations opened up the west to new

ideas and theological rivals.

Muslim world was more advanced than Europe. Medicine,

astronomy, philosophy, mathematics, and ancient literature.
The were also inclusive, and welcomed Jewish and Christian
scholars.

Establishment of Christian kingdoms in the Middle East

allowed for more trade with surrounding cultures. Oils,
spices, fruits, etc.

THE RISE OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE

Imagine how different your life would be without

international trade.

Many items Italian merchants began to bring by sea after

the Crusades were luxury goods jewels, rugs, silk, satin,
etc.

Spices became the most sought after good. Pepper

improved the taste of European food

Pepper was so valuable that merchants would count each

peppercorn, as it was worth more in weight than gold!

MOVING GOODS AND

RESOURCES
How do we move items
today?

If you were importing cut

flowers from South America,
what means of
transportation would you
choose?

How would you transport

food without a refrigerator
unit?

MIDDLE AGES/RENAISSANCE TRADE

Areas rich in resources like

minerals, timber, fur, etc.
exchanged these for cloth
and manufactured goods
produced in other areas.

Ships from Genoa and

Venice were very active in
trade. Looking at the map,
why do you think that is?

Create a cause-and-effect diagram for the three factors that you

think were most important in the rise of trade in Europe starting
in the 1300s
Cause 1

Effect 1

Cause 2

Effect 2

Cause 3

Effect 3

Why did geography have such an important effect on economic

relationships during the Renaissance?

DETERMINE THE LOCATION OF THE 5 BIGGEST CITIES IN

CANADA. WHAT GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES DO THESE CITIES HAVE
IN COMMON WITH THE MAJOR CITIES IN RENAISSANCE EUROPE?

SUPPOSE A EUROPEAN MONARCH SENT YOU TO FIND

A PLACE TO BUILD A NEW CITY THAT WOULD BE A
CENTER FOR THE EXCHANGE OF GOODS AND IDEAS
WHAT PHYSICAL FEATURES
WOULD YOU LOOK FOR?

WHERE IN EUROPE WOULD YOU

CHOOSE TO BUILD THIS CITY?
