THE EXPANSION OF

TRADE
Goods, Resources and WAR!!!!!!

MARCO POLO
Merchant who ventured to the East
Travelled across the Silk Road
Encountered Kublai Khan
Returned with fantastical stories of
what he witnessed

THE SILK ROAD

This is the name given

to routes that
connected civilizations
from the
Mediterranean in the
west to the Pacific
Ocean in the east.

More than goods were

passed along these
routes intercultural
contact!

Led to the exchange of

ideas and knowledge
as well.

THE CLASH OF CULTURES THE CRUSADES

Trade between Italian cities

and the East had been
established long before
Marco Polos journey

The Crusades were a

religious war between
Christian and Muslim forces

The land of Palestine,

which is sacred to Jews,
Christians and Muslims was
the focus

SO WHAT HAPPENED?

Middle East region,

including Jerusalem, fell to
the Turks who later
converted to a rapidly
expanding new religion:
Islam

1095 Pope Urban II calls

on Christians in Europe to
march and reclaim the land

Thousands walked across

Europe to the Holy Land.
The First Crusade had

MORE THAN ONE CRUSADE?!

THE SECOND CRUSADE
Saladin
reclaims
much of the
lands lost
during the
first crusade
for the
Muslims

THE THIRD CRUSADE

Kings of Europe head off to the Third

Crusade to fight Saladin in the Holy
Lands.

King Richard the Lion Heart of

England

King Phillip II of France

Frederick Barbarossa of the Holy

Roman Empire (drowns in a river on
the way there)

St. Marks
Cathedral in
Venice

But wait, what is

that above the
doorway?

Oh just the
horse
statues that
Crusaders
stole during
the fourth
Crusade.

WHAT IS SO
SIGNIFICANT
ABOUT THE
CRUSADES?
It exposed European worldview
to other cultures!

Contact with the east allowed for the

exchange of ideas and trade to occur.
This would later continue on the Silk
Road with the adventures of Marco
Polo!
