If shooting, like Samaresh and Anuja agree, is an addiction, we hope they keep the country addicted to them by winning many many more accolades. “I love shooting, so I will continue doing it,” confirms Samaresh, adding, “There is lot more to achieve. There is the Asian Games to win the then there is the Olympics.” “Besides, there is nothing to beat what you feel when you are on the podium getting medals, with your country flag fluttering high and the national anthem playing in the background. It makes you feel very proud,” say Anuja and Samaresh in unison, (a) On the basis of your reading of the above passage, make notes on it using headings and sub-headings. Read the following passage : 8 Public speaking is an art. And like all arts, it can be learnt. Here are a few tips to help you master the fine art of public speaking. Everyone feels nervous before a public speaking performance; the trick is to master your nervousness and not show any discomfort. You have to focus on your audience. You must know ‘who’ they are, what is it that will interest them and how much do they already know about what you are going to say. Jot down these points and refer to them, As you organise your thoughts, put them down on paper. First write the three or four main points you want your audience to remember. More than that and your message will get diffused. Summarise each point, idea or concept in a single sentence. Facts are always important; but people remember stories about real-life instances. Weave such a story around the facts you want to present. Dont clutter your thoughts with technical jargon or with big words. It doesn't impress the audience; it merely confuses them. There have been many well-known speakers who've rambled on and on using complex sentences and complicated words. All they have succeeded in doing is to confuse their audiences — making them bored and utterly disenchated with the core matter. So it is better to be sensible and project simple yet lucid thoughts to the people who are listening to you. You will find that you have their attention. Use index cards to write down your speech. Each point can be written on a single card. Index cards are easier to manage and change, as compared to a sheaf of papers that you are clutching in your hand. Read out your entire speech in front of the family, friends or colleagues. You'll be able to time yourself, put the emphasis on the right points and not overshoot 48 “ogether with® Functional English - XII aa You have either reached a page that is unavailable for viewing or reached your viewing limit for this book. aa You have either reached a page that is unavailable for viewing or reached your viewing limit for this book. Ql2. Read the following passage : 8 In recent times, newspapers regularly report cases of teenagers committing suicide. While some of the suicides are a culmination of exam stress, others are due to career problems while yet others are a result of unreciprocated love or break-ups. Whatever the cause, statistics suggest that teenagers are under tremendous pressure, which is making them lose control over their feelings, as most of them are ill-equipped to deal with it in a mature way. But, if in a country that should take pride in its young population, teenagers are going berserk or giving up on life itself, there is something seriously wrong somewhere. Apart from academic challenges, parental pressure to participate in the maximum number of extra-curricular activities causes profound stress. All the time, we tell our children to excel and give their best. This mounts pressure on them to perform well and attain unrealistic goals. The teen suicide rate goes up high cither during board exams or results as students always anticipate the worst. Biological factors play a significant role in behavioural health problems. Recent studies have demonstrated that people who have attempted suicide have low levels of serotonin hormone, which regulates mood, emotions, sleep and appetite. Depression also distorts their viewpoint, allowing them to focus only on their failures and disappointments. Depression can be genetic and can get triggered by environment stressors. In children who experience violence, addictions, poverty, and sexual, physical or emotional abuse, the risk of attempting suicide is higher. Also, young people who grow up in dysfunctional families, where parents have paucity of time are left feeling deprived of love and understanding. Most suicides are caused by a combination of events that leads a person to believe that ending life is the only way out. An unsuccessful love affair or an abusive relationship can hamper their self-esteem and self-confidence to such an extent that teens take such an impulsive step. Most teenagers who attempt suicide often go through a dramatic personality change. Some start giving away their cherished possessions to near and dear ones. Others become pre-occupied about death and committing suicide. A teenager who is planning to commit suicide may also complain of being a bad person or feeling rotten inside. Give verbal hints with statements such as - ‘I won't be a problem for you much longer’, ‘Nothing matters’, ‘It's no use’, and ‘I won't see you again’. Put his or her affairs in order, for example, clean his or her room, throw away important belongings, ete. Become suddenly cheerful after a period of depression. Have signs of psychosis (hallucinations or bizarre thoughts). This is a sure cry for help. It is extremely important to not ignore these signs. Paying attention to and responding to these clues can sometimes save a life and Advanced Reading Sills 51 prevent a tragedy. Most of the time, teens, who consider suicide, are willing to discuss it if someone asks them out of concern and care. Some people (teens and adults) are reluctant to ask teens if they have been thinking about suicide or hurting themselves for fear that, by asking, they may plant the idea of suicide in their minds. This is a myth. It is always a good thing to ask and to initiate the conversation with someone you think may be considering suicide. ‘The most important thing you can do immediately for your child is simply listen to them. They need to know that someone cares and is there. Trust your instincts and ask them to articulate their feelings. Stay calm and composed and reassure them but avoid minimising the seriousness of their concerns. Ask direct qu without being judgmental. Determine if they have a specific plan to carry out suicide. If they have more detailed plan, the risk is greater. Do not leave them alone or act shocked. The most important long-term thing you can do is to link the suicidal person with a network of professional support. jons Suicidal attempts in these cases are very impulsive, as rational thinking gets blocked. The loss of the child is the most profound loss that a family can experience. It's important to know how one can prevent such incidents in family, friends and relatives by understanding the signs and symptoms. (a) On the basis of your reading of the above passage, make notes on it using headings and sub-headings. Use recognisable abbreviations, wherever necessary. Supply a suitable title to the passage. 5 (6) On the basis of your reading of the above passage, write a summary in about 80 words. 3 Q13. Read the following passage + Apes belong to the same type of animals as man himself. They have larger brains than any other animal, though their brains are smaller than man’s. They all belong to the hot countries of the world — Tropical Africa and South-East Asia. The gorilla is the largest of the apes. He is as tall as six feet when standing upright. He is known to be very fierce and is often described as standing on his hind legs, beating his chest with his hands, and roaring in anger. Now that we know more about gorillas in their home, in the forests of Central Africa, we learn that they are, in fact, peaceful animals and never use their great strength unless attacked. Gorillas go about in family parties of one old male, with several females and their young ones; these include babies, carried hanging on to their mothers’ fur and youngsters up to six years old. They roam through the tropical forests on all fours, and seldom stand up on their hind legs, for these are weak compared with their long and very strong arms. They have sharp eyesight and notice even slight 52 Fogether ceth® Functional English - XII 14, movements from quite a distance. Gorillas have black faces and long, black, hairy coats. They feed during the day on plants and fruits, especially on wild celery and bamboo. ‘The chimpanzee also belongs to the forests of tropical Africa. It stands just five feet high and weighs only ten stone. It has short hair on its body and ears; its hands and feet are skin-coloured and baby chimpanzees have pink faces. Instead of beating their chests when angry, they make a hooting bark. ‘The orangutan or ‘Old Man of the Woods’, lives in Borneo and Sumatra in the East Indies. Though it is only four and a half feet high, it weighs nearly fourteen stones. It has rough reddish hair, especially long on the shoulders, back, and arms Its legs are short and weak, but its arms are long and strong. It moves over the ground by putting its hands down and swinging its body between the arms. But it spends most of its time in the trees, swinging from branch to branch The fourth ape, the gibbon of South-East Asia, is the smallest ~ only three feet high and weighing only a stone. This small, finely built ape has such long arms that it holds them over its head when running on the ground. In trees, it uses them to swing easily through the branches, and it takes flying jumps from one tree to another, as much as forty fect at a time. Gibbons are also fruit-eaters and live in family parties. In the jungle they keep in touch with each other by calling loudly all the time. At sunrise and sunset there is a loud chorus of calls ringing through the forest. (Delhi 2005) (a) On the basis of your reading of the above passage, make notes on it using headings and sub-headings. Use recognizable abbreviations, wherever necessary. 5 (6) On the basis of your reading of the above passage, write a summary in about 80 words. 3 Read the passage given below : Pollution is the fouling of the environment — that is, land, water and air — by waste, smoke, chemicals, and other harmful substances. Every industrial country faces the problem of waste. As factories make new goods for people to buy. old ones are thrown out with the household trash. Burning this garbage pollutes the air; throwing it in rivers and seas pollutes the water; and rubbish heaps are unpleasant and take up much-needed space. Getting rid of plastics is particularly difficult — with time, wood and paper decay through the action of bacteria, but plastics never decay. The world’s oceans have been used as ‘dustbins’, with millions of tonnes of litter being thrown into the seas every year, endangering marine life. And so can the bills. For example, the Dezins showroom in Delhi’s Greater Kailash deals exclusively in kid’s bathroom and bedroom linen. Here you will find quilts and bed linen that cost between Rs. 500 to Rs. 1500 while purple Mickey Mouse chairs come for Rs. 2,000. 10 “It’s not just the question of keeping up with the Jone’s. Its thumbing your nose at the Jones's,” says child psychologist Bonita Sehgal Hanspal. “And since most parents lack imagination, it boils down to sticking currency notes on the walls.” This is where designers come in. Respected Chairperson, ladies and gentiemen and my dear friends, a very good morning to all of you. | stand before you to support the motion ‘Should English be Made the National Language.” We all know that eversince India became independent, the fortune of English has seen many ups and downs. But it has become a part and parcel of our daily life. India io a land of many languages, cultures and religions. It io rich in variety and diversity. But there is also a real danger that in the absence of a link tanguage, its unity may juet fall into bits. Considering the situation, English is the only lanquage which can discharge this important. obligation by bringing unity in spite of diversity. In today’s fast changing world, English is the only language which can keep track of the changes happening rapidly all around the globe. | totally disagree with the point of my worthy opponent who has just said that books can be translated into Hindi, the national ianguage. But | would like to point out that by the time we translate one book into Hindi, ten new will be published and our work shall never be completed. We shall merely turn ourselves into a nation of translators. It io not only impossible but ridiculous to translate all the ecientific and technical terms into Hind | would like to tell my worthy opponent that abeence of English from India will hinder the main areas of our development such as exchange of professors, doctors, administrators, students ete. Research will slacken and there will be a steep decline in the quality of education In India, those who oppose it, seem to be a little prejudiced either for political reasons or because of come sick mentality. | ask you, don't these people accept foreign goods, ciothes. technical oadgets etc, they do, because they are good and useful. Why then oppose English, simply because it is a foreign language ? They should not forget that it was the knowledge of English that helped India gain freedom, It is high time that we opened our eyes and in the best interest of the nation, we should adopt it a6 our national language. 128 ogerher with® Functional English - XH Ans. Views Against the Motion Respected Chairperson, Hor'ble judges and friends, | will present my point of view againot the motion ‘Should English ve Made the National Language’. Language problem is one of the most ticklish problems that the country has been facing for a long time. After independence our constitution makere decided that Hindi should be the national language as it le epoken by a majori languages. of people. Hindi ie the big sister in the family of Indian English is 4 foreign language. which was forced upon us by Britishers. Now the Britishere are gone 90 English language should also be discarded for ever. It will be insulting If India does not have a language of it own for purposes of official business. | would like to remind my worthy opponent that English is spoken and used by a microscopic minority of the people and they cannot dominate the majority which speaks Hindi. Making of English as the official ianguage of the country will be a sort of an affront: to our national honour. | want to inform you that every country has its own national and official language. And we should algo otrive In this direction to make Hindi as our official language. The government is spending huge sums of money for spreading Hindi to other states where other regional languages dominate, With the help of official patronage, Hindi Prachar Samiti and other various govt. and non govt. agencies, the day is not far when Endlish will be left behind and Hindi will be widely accepted by all At the end | would like to say that Hindi is our national language and ft should not be replaced by English. The need of the hour is that we have to prepare more and more people emotionally to leam Hindi. The only thing that is required is patience and understanding Thank you You are Amit/ Amita, give your views in the form of an article on - ‘Temptation of the Small Screen’. (10 marks) Today we stand at the threshold of a world which is changing at a breathtaking pace. We can no longer call the T.v. an ‘Idiot Box’ - it ia our world, whether we are making a eandwich or doing our assignment. It is surprising but true that many children watch TY, for 10 hours daily. This they do at the cost of other important activities. Small screen attracts them so much that they ignore their eseential routine such ae homework, meale etc, We admit that TY. watching is essential to keep abreast of the changing times. it develops an awarenene in the children who are being raized today 0 that they may be strong and ready for an unpredictable and etrange tomorrow. If children watch good programmes their awarenese, general knowledge and understanding is enhanced. It makes them capable of taking part in every discussion, But if children choose to watch crime, violence and only bad and wrong things, they may deviate from the right path and develop a fear psychosis. Even the advertisements shoun on TV. can prove harmful for children because they force their parents to buy unnecessary things and thus squander their money. Sometimes they biindly follow the difficult and frightening tactice and feats displayed by TV, artiste and land themoelves in trouble, The only solution to this problem jo that eldere must be present when children watch T.V. or keep a watch on them. Children are taught to survive in this world and for that they must be taught to pick up the best and leave the rubbish dished out by the omall screen Effective Writing Skills 129 PRACTICE QUESTIONS (10 marks each) Q5. ‘Choosing a Career’. A Room 10’ x 8 K.S. Duggal MAIN THEME “Man proposes, God disposes” is the main theme of the story authored by Mr. K.S. Duggal. It is a beautiful story dealing with destiny as well as irony. Mrs. Malik is a simple housewife who dreams of having a house of her own. From day one she emphasises the need of a room 10’ = 8", Mr. Malik is not a very indulgent husband and leaves the decision to his wife. Even the architect is at a loss and not able to understand the peculiar specifications for the room meant to be a storeroom. Now comes the hidden desire of Mrs. Malik to the forefront. She wishes that room might be for her mother-in-law and later on (after her demise) can be used as a storeroom She was so fond of her house (which was under construction) that she was ready to forego the company of her husband. Now fate plays its part and her house is acquired by the government. She has to move out of the city, her mother-in-law expires. Her husband retires, children get married. She has not shifted to her dream house yet. Fate again plays truant and she loses her husband. The irony ~ she falls in the same place which she had once planned for her mother-in-law. She has lost all her zeal to go to her new house. She is compelled to think if she was ever destined to be a landlady. The “maroon saree” in the architect’s sketch haunts her. She enters her new house in a totally changed situation - from a landlady to a mother-in-law. She is totally disgruntled with her daughter-in-law. Without her efforts she got the position of a landlady. Her efforts ~ hard work ~ dreams, everything becomes a part of past. The last jolt eomes when she is ushered into the same room which she had designed for her mother-in-law and the words echo in her ears ~ “the house has no store room”. She lies down in her room waiting for her end to come ~ pondering over the irony and the twist in fate. PRACTICE QUESTIONS FOR @Q. 13 (4 marks each) CBSE QUESTIONS Ql. A study says that the first word a child speaks is ‘so’ because this is the word he hears the most. We see children emoking the discarded cigarette stubs - sipping the leftover wine in the glasses. Environment plays an important role The story by K.S. Duggal also endorses the point. Mr. Malik’s son sees his father's non-interfering attitude where Mrs, Malik plans her dream house. Tae Hum or INsEcts Robert Lynd MAIN THEME It is a beautiful essay by Robert Lynd which talks about the various sounds generated by the insects, the feelings, views and memories related to them. When the writer talks about the hum of insects he is immediately reminded of the mosquito and the bee where the former is the cold-blooded enemy whereas bee is considered to be noble as compared to a mosquito. He gives various examples to prove his point and comes to the place where he calls humans partially civilised as they steal the bees’ hive and take away honey collected by them. He finds bee helpful in pollination and inoffensive unless provoked. The best part is that not being nocturnal like the mosquito there is no fear of it disturbing us in our sleep. In the latter part the author philosophises and calls them as the sounds depicting life and the pleasure hidden in it. He is reminded of his childhood where this was the only world which existed for him — these sounds were not a noise but a source of immense enchantment. On the contrary when we grow it becomes a noise for us which we are not able to enjoy. It irritates us and the insects don't give happiness but come out to be a problem, stabbing creatures, PRACTICE QUESTIONS FOR Q. NO. 13 (4 marks each) CBSE QUESTIONS QI. Traditionally the visual and performing arts had been seen as interesting but not useful, as recreational or leisure activities. The arts received public money, but this was seen as subsidy, as a loss leader so to speak. The 1988 study made an important new argument: that the arts make a significant contribution to the national economy and are serious forms of employment for very many people. In 1988 this contribution was estimated at six billion pounds per year to GDP. In 1998, the Government set up a creative industries task-force. The following year it published an assessment of the economic significance of this sector. It defined the creative industries as including advertising, architecture, arts and antiques, crafts, design, fashion, film, leisure software, music, performing arts, publishing, software and computer services, television and radio. In 1998 the government estimated that these creative industries had generated annual revenues of £60 billion, a tenfold increase in ten years. The communications revolution, increasing bandwidth and the advent of digital networks are creating new global markets, multiplying outlets and increasing consumer demand. These new forms of work are creating a demand for new sorts of skill and aptitude. Unlike many other industrial sectors, the creative industries continue to benefit from high growth rates, in part because they build on and interact with innovations in science and technology. In Britain, employment in the creative industries has grown by 34% in a decade, against a background of almost no growth in employment in the economy as a whole. This picture is comparable in the United States. There, the intellectual property sectors, whose value depends on their ability to generate new ideas rather than to manufacture commodities, are now the most powerful element in the US economy. ‘The Intellectual Property Association in Washington has estimated these sectors to be worth currently $360 billion a year, making them more valuable than automobiles, agriculture or aerospace. They are growing at twice the rate of the economy as a whole, and generating jobs at three times the underlying rate. The intellectual property sector is even more significant when patents from science and technology are included: in pharmaceuticals, electronics, biotechnology, and information systems among others. All of these technologies are based on fundamental advances in the sciences and in engineering. They are creative fields of huge significance. The creative industries are labour-intensive and need many different types of specialist skill. ‘Television and film production far example, draws on a variety of specialist roles in performance, in script writing, in camera and sound operation, in lighting, makeup, design, editing and postproduction. As the financial significance of this sector grows, so does its employment base. This is not true of the financial services. Examination Papers 369 2, Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: 8 THE PAPERLESS OFFICE ? The development of the Internet, email and the word processor led to widespread, confident predictions about the paperless office. With these new electronic media, there would be no need for written communications to be sent on paper, or so it was said. In fact, the demand for office paper in total has grown on average by 8.1% each year since 1981. It is predicted to grow by at least 4-5 per cent until 2010 and even beyond. This overall increase conceals some intriguing underlying trends. There has been a relative decline in demand for copier paper. In Europe, between 1995 and 2000 the consumption of copier paper reduced by 11%. So what is driving the growth in office paper sales? There are two factors. The first is information. The amount of information available to the average office worker will, according to some reports, increase six-fold by the year 2010. This insatiable appetite for information is coupled with a quantum leap in case of access. Although the percentage of information being printed is in sharp decline, this is more than compensated for by the fact that the amount of information available to us is doubling every two years. The net effect is growth in office paper of around 5% across Europe. Many people don’t like reading complicated emails, and print them off to look atthem later. Email speeds communication but it encourages a more thoughtless process of writing — what has been called stream of unconsciousness. Word processors encourage repeated drafting and new levels of perfectionism that are creating an exponential demand for paper. . Underlying these patterns is a profound change in the way documents are produced. The old way was print and distribute, a way of working that was dominated by the photocopier and small office printer. The new mode is distribution and print : ‘This is the realm of the office printer and everyone has access to one of those. The world has gone from supporting 10,000 publishers to 100 million publishers and the figure rises every minute.’ The paperless office is a clear fiction, although the products and applications and, most importantly, the customers for paper have changed radically. In 1997, the printer overtook the copier as the largest consumer of paper. By 2005 two-thirds of all paper in the office will go through the printer. The fate of paperless office is just one example of the difficulty of predictin; ‘2 effects of technological innovations on economic and social systems. So is the idea of the leisured society. Some people in the corporate sector believe that the highest job satisfaction is enjoyed by those in least-paying jobs, like in NGOs and social organizations. This sounded ironical but still exciting enough to mull over for those of us in the corporate world who chase a mirage called job satisfaction and often confuse it with high salaries. 2. Five years ago, I was posted in Kolkata, This is where I had the soul-stirring experience of meeting Ravikant at Belur Math, the Ramkrishna Mission's headquarters. Away from the city’s boisterous roads, Belur is tranquility personified. It had been 18 years since Ravikant and I had passed out from IIT Kanpur, where we spent our days in neighbouring hostel rooms. In the course of lunch that day at Belur, he unfolded his post-IIT story, which marked a turning point for my own view towards life. 3. Ravikant Jadhav was ranked second across India in the JEE and completed his B.Tech. in computer science with a perfect 10 CPI. A recipient of the President's gold medal at IIT, he spurned all offers of plum scholarships from top foreign universities. Instead, he went on to do his Ph.D. from IIT, Kanpur. As his neighbour I was familiar with Ravikant's leanings towards Swami Vivekananda and Ramkrishna Paramhans. Often, when I barged into his room for a chat session, I would find him deep into reading their teachings. These had an impact on his day-to-day actions as well. An example of his austerity was the fact that he managed to pass those four years with just a pair of white kurta-pyjamas. He spent a lot of time teaching the mess workers’ children besides other poor employees of IIT. Top brain that he was, the toughest assignments were cracked by him in a jiffy. 4, His entire family along with many of us, egged him on to study abroad. I occasionally mocked his convictions and told his parents he would eventually succumb to the lure of dollars, just like several of his batch-mates. But, he couldn’t be deterred from his single-minded pursuit of serving humanity. He would explain, “Just like Silicon Valley, social sectors too desperately need intelligent people.” Examination Papers 385 5. He continues to positively impact the lowest rung of the social ladder. Recently, he helped save the life of 12-year-old Rashi, who developed a hole in her heart. Her operation in Bangalore cost Rs. 3 lakh and on reading Ravikant’s email, I had contributed my bit, but was doubtful if he would meet the target. But, as I recently found out, Rashi was back home in Kanpur after a successful surgery, making me put my faith in Ravikant’s words that, “There are a lot of good people in the world, we just need to reach out to them.” 6. Unmarried, he has dedicated his entire life towards a social cause. He joined the Ramkrishna Mission after his doctorate and, by now has taught computer science to several thousand students at their university, besides managing various projects spread across the country. He also humbly believes that Belur Math has given him the opportunity to achieve his mission. Yet, his journey continu 7. Ravikant’s story is beyond inspiration. When I look around at my batch-mates, many of whom head companies, I consider Ravikant the biggest success story of IIT. His story should be a catalyst for all those who want to bridge the social abyss created by market forces and government inaction. As I write a cheque for Rs. 15,000 for my three-year-old son’s quarterly fee, I'm reminded of an education system gone horrendously wrong. Unlike many of us who keep trodding known paths, Ravikant Maharaj — as he is popularly known in Belur ~ has clearly found his own path and left a trail. = Off the Beaten Track (Times News Network) (a) On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer the following question: 8 (Why, according to the author, is job satisfaction a mirage ? 1 Gi) Mention two interests of Ravikant other than studies. 2 (iii) Why did the author mock at Ravikant's convictions ?
