Professional Profile
Dr. Marc VERMEERSCH is the newly appointed Managing Director of SPERC. Dr.VERMEERSCH brings to KAUST his
technological and business experience in solar energy and engineering; he joins the team to contribute to make SPERC the
reference Center in solar energy research and engineering in the Kingdom and a premier worldwide research and educational
resource in solar energy research and engineering.
Before joining KAUST, Dr. Marc VERMEERSCH has been working for more than eight years for the French oil and gas
company TOTAL where he has been the founder of the solar research and development group from 2006 to 2012; after
having catalyzed the major investment in SunPower corporation, he then took the position of Senior Advisor in Solar
Technologies and Strategy.His background is in solid-state physics and materials science; Dr. VERMEERSCH also completed
his expertise with a postgraduate qualification in Management and Business Administration.
Prior to joining TOTAL, he had been working for more than ten years for the French Group Saint-Gobain, first in the research
and development for advanced thin-film deposition processes as well as products for building and automotive applications,
and later in the industrial scale-up and transfer processes from lab to production. In Saint-Gobain, he also worked at
initiating a new technical and marketing approach in the innovation process and the product development via envelope
dynamics simulation and sensitivity to product and system properties, as well as building regulation requirements.
