1. State Standard(s):
3.MD.A2 Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects
using standards units of grams (g), Kilograms (kg), and liters (l). Add,
subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one step word problems involving
masses or volumes that are given in the same units, e.g by using
drawings.
2. Teaching Model(s):
Co-teach
Lemov's Strategy: Do Now, Circulate, Post
3. Objective(s):
Students will learn about liquid measurement and how many pints, quarts, and cups make
up 1 gallon by creating their own Mr. Gallon Man.
4. Materials and Technology Resources
Life size Mr. Gallon Man (created by teacher prior to lesson)
Mr. Gallon Man template for each student
Scissors
glue sticks
Computer and projector for powerpoint
Powerpoint : Capacity Measurement Mr. Gallon Man
5. Instructional Procedures:
a. Motivation/Engagement:
To activate and assess students prior knowledge on capacity measurements
teacher will have students do a Do Now activity.
Do Now Activity: Students will answer the following 3 questions
1). 2 pins = _____quart(s)? (1)
2). 1 gallon =____Cup(s)? (16)
3). 2 pins =_____cup(s)? (4)
b .Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences:

During lesson, Teacher will create anchor chart and introduce life size Mr.
Gallon Man.
As a whole class, students will discuss or review the four different kinds
of measurement (gallons, quarts, pints, and cups).
Teacher will ask the following questions: How many
pins/quarts/cups in a gallon? (DOK level 1). Define capacity?
show two containers and have students explain which hold
less/more (DOK level 3). Estimate the capacity of container A
(DOK level 2). Convert 5 gallons to quarts (DOK level 4).
Students will afterwards create a Mr. Gallon Man from the pattern
pieces, following the directions on the Mr. Gallon Man Overview.
Teacher will discuss the overview sheet with students and do a few
simple problems (Ex: 1 quart = ___ Pints).
Once completed students will have a template to help them remember
how many pints, quarts, and cups are in 1 gallon as well as which form
of measurement is largest all the way to the smallest.
Students will use Mr. Gallon Man to complete The Gallon Man
Worksheet.
Teacher will circulate the room to observe students assemble Mr.
Gallon Man correctly.

c. Closure:
As a whole class, students will discuss the answers to the worksheet.
d. Extension:
If time permits, students will complete Mr. Gallon Showdown Activity Page. In teams
of two or more students will get one activity page per team and ask
someone to cut apart the cards. Once a student cuts the car each
student will work the problems on their own at the same time. Each
student will need a piece of paper. The first student on the team flips
over the top card. Everyone works on the problem on their piece of
paper individually without talking. As team members finish, they place
their piece of paper face down in front of them. When everyone is
ready, the leader says showdown and everyone turns their piece of
paper face up to show their answers. Students discuss their answers
and the leader writes the team answer on the activity card. For each
round, the role of leader rotates to the left.
6. Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners:
Accommodations: Teacher will assign a peer buddy to ELL students.
Teacher will work one-on-one with student who needs assistant.
Modifications: Teacher will provide longer-think time for those who
need it.

Differentiation: Teacher will ask a variety of questions at students level

to ask and will use Equity sticks.

7. Assessment and Evaluation of Learning:

a. Formative:
Students will be assessed through observation. Teacher will circulate the room to
observe if students are correctly assembling Mr. Gallon Man.
b. Summative:
Students will be assessed by completion of The Gallon Man Worksheet.
8. Homework Assignment:
Students will complete worksheet: Measuring Capacity with GallonBot
