Colored Pencil Leaf Study

Learning Goal:
Referencing at least one of the leaves provided, create a photo-realistic drawing of a leaf
using colored pencils.
1. Pick a leaf or two
2. Take a piece of paper provided and a set of colored pencils
3. Lightly sketch the shape and veins of the leaf paying careful attention to the edges
and details of the veins
4. Layer at least 5 different colors/values in all areas of the leaf using a very light
application of layers of hatching, cross-hatching, or scumbling.
5. Be sure not to press too hard or the paper will become saturated with wax from the
colored pencil preventing additional layering.
6. Use analogous (related) colors to create smooth gradations.
7. Use a full range of values to create shadows and highlights.
8. Use a colors complementary color to achieve neutral colors (browns) and darker
values.
