Corruption
In 2014 the former president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was accused of doing
corruption, by giving politicians $22,000, for their support of his presidencial.
There was a trial helf for this corruption case, and it is related with the
goverment tender to build the Hambalang Sport Center that costs multimilion
dollar. The chairman of the Presidents Democratic party was Anas
Urbaningrum, and he resigned on 2013 due of being named as the suspect of
the case. Muhammad Nazaruddin who was the partys treasurer, was sent into
jail. But he stated that the money was used by the goverment to help Anas
Urbaningrum to win the party chairmanship.

Anas Urbaningrum also stated that he bought a $22,000 car after he

received the money from the president as gratitude for the support of his
second term as the president. One of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyonos
goverment minister was also named as a corruption suspect. Jero Wacik,
the energy and minerals minister was asked to be questioned by the KPK,
before he was named as the suspect, and he was suspected of a raft of graft
allegations. Ministers get paid for attending overtime meetings when there
were no meetings. Most of the ministers that were close to the president or
involved in high-profile politicians string, were sent to jail, which is one of
the consequences of doing corruption.

Case of Nepotism
The practice among those with power or influence of favouring relatives or
friends, especially by giving them jobs
Around early 2014, the Budget Secretary of Phillipines, lorencio Abad F, committed nepotism
within the government. 11 members of his family has a position in the countrys government
system and the presidential spokesman, Edwin Lacerdia rationalized that their positions isnt the
result of nepotism. He said Their surnames shouldnt be a basis for saying they have too much
power, and that their performances should be a way to measure their worth in the government
(Of course, its nepotism). Asides from Abad, Environment Secretary, Ramon Paje also has 9
relatives in the government. Energy Secretary, Jericho Petilla has seven relatives, and Finance
Secretary Cesar Purisima and Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. has 5 each.

Consequences of Nepotism
The word Nepotism itself doesnt have a bad connotation to it and in certain
cases, like family businesses, can be beneficial, as it results in a stable
working social order. However, in the government, nepotism can cause a
dysfunctioning system. The Phillipines has a rule against nepotism, as they
want to establish a society where everyone has equal rights and
opportunities. Nepotism is done for selfish purposes and seeks mainly to
increase the familys interest and monopolize the government. Nepotism
decreases the efficiency of the government system as those holding the key
positions as a result of nepotism arent usually capable of fullfilling the
requirements and expectations that comes along with their key positions, and
in the end, can damage the country as a whole.
