criticised by other countries but it has worked for
the Republic in building cooperation instead of
strife and tripartism instead of industrial warfare,
said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
He was speaking to about 1,100 guests, who
included unionists, union partners and
international guests such as director-general of the
International Labour Organisation Guy Ryder, at
the opening dinner of the Labour Movements
National Delegates Conference.

strong protection, but that leaves non-members, especially the
unemployed and youths, to carry the burden. Young people may take
on temporary jobs with poor conditions and no security, for instance.
Some countries like the United States have weak unions and see
declining union membership. Productivity may rise but wages have
not risen much and workers do not feel they are getting a fair share of
the fruits of growth.
The government must also create conditions such as law and order
and set the rules to mitigate excesses of a market system, in using
the power of free markets, Mr Lee said.
He said the Labour Movement must also adapt to the ageing
population and the growing proportion of professionals.
A new central committee will be elected at the delegates conference
and Mr Lee urged delegates to give the new leadership a strong
mandate to chart a long-term vision for the Labour Movement.
