1.2 Supervisors details

Name: John Dodsworth
Job Title: Physical Education and Health Co-ordinator
Email address of Supervisor: dodsworth.john.j@edumail.vic.gov.au
Qualifications: Bachelor of Applied Science (Physical Education) (1994)
Diploma of Education (2002)
Career History: John graduated from his Bachelor of Applied Science (Physical Education) at
Ballarat University in 1994. After graduation, he didnt go straight into working in Physical
Education. He first began working as a truck driver for a logistics company. This was because
a very small percentage of graduates went straight into teaching. During this time he was
still working at a local leisure centre doing lifeguarding and personal training. In 1996, He
worked at a Garage fixing pushbikes. He did this up until 1999.
After he had saved up some money, he decided to travel and he went over to England.
While he was there, he worked in a Pub for a year where he met his wife. John and his wife
both wanted to do a Diploma of Education so they came back to Australia to complete one
together in 2002. Once they had received this diploma, they went back to England. John

worked as a Dispatch Manager for Linfox while doing Casual Relief Teaching at Little Ilford
College.
In 2006, they both moved back over to Melbourne where John was offered a Job at
Roxburgh College. After 4 weeks of working at Roxburgh College, John was already
promoted to Sports Co-ordinator. John is still there after 6 years and has the title of Physical
Education and Health Co-ordinator.

Over my 70 hour placement I was lucky enough to see how John does a number of these
duties to a very high level. I had an excellent insight into not only the teaching side of
Physical Education but the organisational and administrative side of it too. I assisted John
with many jobs such as:
-

Organising the buses for 5 interschool sport days

Collaborating data (year 7-10) from the athletics carnival to choose the team for the
interschool athletics day

Organise permission forms for sporting excursions for three year 7 classes

1.4 Organisation mission statement and aims of the section of the

organisation, the program and or project where student worked
Organisation mission statement: Respect, Learn, Achieve
Roxburgh College is a Vibrant and multicultural community of students, staff and parents.
I enjoyed entering the community staff room every morning as I started placement because
they had a number of quotes written up by the staff and students. These were important
aspects of the school environment which related to the elements of the schools mission
statement.

1.5 Programs and/or Services provided by the Organisation

In the Physical Education and Health stream they provide the students with Compulsory
classes from years 7-10 in both PE and Health.
They give the students the opportunity to participate in interschool sport in activities such
as Athletics, Swimming, Football, Soccer, Netball, Basketball, Rugby, Table Tennis, Volleyball
and Tennis.
For students that participate in specific interschool sports, the PE and Health department
organise Football and Soccer clinics for specially selected students to gain extra skills and
work with professionals.

They developed the elective of Sport which gave the students a double period of Physical
Activity each week. This was a great Physical Activity and Health promotion within the
school which was unfortunately removed as an elective choice at the end of 2012.
Another great program within the Physical Education department was a 10 week Football
program run by Chris Tarrant from Collingwood Football Club (ran in 2011 and 2012). This
gave 20 students within the school the opportunity to undergo a training program to
improve their physical skills in football, as well as many important life skills that are required
to be a successful sports person such as organisation, respect, communication and
teamwork. Unfortunately, this opportunity was declined by the school this year.

1.6 Budget and Financial Information

The school distributes the budget evenly between the Key Learning Areas: English,
Mathematics, Science, Art, Humanities, Languages, Technology, Integrated Studies, ESL,
Library and Physical Education and Health. This budget consists of funding from the
Government as well as school fees from the students.
Every 2 years, the Physical Education department will update all the equipment used in
Physical Education as well as the maintenance of the Gymnasium and Ovals. Majority of the
budget will go towards replacing top quality equipment.
When the syllabus changes within the Department for either Physical Education or Health,
they will replace all the resources such as books and update all online texts to ensure the
students have up to date information of the subject. The rest of the Budget goes towards
staff salaries.

Day and Date

Hours

Tasks

Friday 22/3

6.5

On my first day of placement, I was put into classes with

different teachers. In the morning I was with a year 8 PE theory

8:45-3:15

class who were working on an assignment on fitness

components. The teacher offered my help to the students with
any questions that concerned the assignment. After recess, I was
put with a year 10 PE practical class, they didnt go over any skill
acquisition activities, they went straight into the game of softball
which they did for the 100 minute class. The teacher and I also
participated in their game which was enjoyable to interact with
the students. In the afternoon, I was observing another year 10
PE class with a different teacher. This teacher had a number of
warm up games and several activities planned for this class to
learn about netball. I found this was more captivating for the
students and interest was kept throughout the class.

Wednesday

3.25

27/3

In the morning, I was with a year 7 and 8 class of Leisure sports.

This allows the students to participate in a range of sports such
as golf, tenpin bowling, archery and orienteering. The usual

8:45-12:00

teacher was absent today, so the substitute teacher and I

supervised them while they had free time on the oval playing
soccer, basketball and football for the 100 minutes. After recess,
I observed the year 11 Dance class. They have been working on a
number of group dances as well as their solo which they will be
assessed on. As I do dance outside of study, I offered to them
any help with choreography and refinement of movements
which they found most helpful.

Wednesday

3.25

17/4

In the morning, The year 7 and 8 leisure sports class played mini
golf on the oval. The teacher set up 9 holes for them and gave
them score sheets. They learnt the basic skills of golf as well as

Student Number: 3886899

7|Page

Jaclyn Munro

8:45-12:00

learning about golf etiquette and scoring which is also important.

I participated in this class with the teacher even though I have
very little experience with golf. I urged the students to always
give it a go even if they werent experts at it. At recess, I was in
charge of organising Senior school sports sign up day. I had all
the sheets out on various table organised for the students to
sign, this wasnt as orderly as I would have liked. After recess, I
was with the year 11 dance class again; I enjoyed working with
them as this is an aspect of physical activity I very much enjoy.
The teacher allowed me to supervise a group of the year 11
students while they were practising their solos, where I was able
to get to know them and communicate my skills with them.

Friday 19/4

6.5

In the morning I was with a year7 PE class. They only had PE for a
single period so they were outside playing a game of soccer. The

8:45-3:15

teacher put me in charge of umpiring the game which was a

good way to monitor the students and ensure they were all
playing fair. In the next morning session I was able to see how PE
teachers prepare for excursions. I learnt how difficult it would be
to organise this as the classes with year 7 and 8 students would
be effected by the NAPLAN testing and also various interschool
sport activities. I was able to go through with the teacher and
work out a suitable day for the students to go on their excursion.
After recess, I was with the year 10 PE class. They were doing the
mile run as a fitness test. The teacher put me in charge of
recording their times of this test and ensuring they all complete
the run. After this, they spent the rest of the double period
playing a game of football. The teacher once again joined in and
urged me to do the same. In the afternoon, I was with a year 11
PE theory class. They were going over energy systems. Once the
teacher went over all the information, they were left to do a set
of questions to test their knowledge. I offered my help to the

students but many of them didnt want it even though they

didnt understand the work.
Wednesday

3.25

24/4

In the morning, during the year 7 and 8 leisure sport class, I was
put in charge in running the warm up activity. I found this was
difficult as a number of students were not listening to me and

8:45-12:00

were not showing co-operation at the beginning, but it wasnt

long before I was able to communicate with them and they
enjoyed my warm up activity. We then had another day of
playing golf where they again worked on putting, scoring and
etiquette. After recess, I was with a Year 8 PE theory class. They
were working on an assignment that involved their progression
of fitness over the semester. I walked around the class and
assisted them with any problems or questions they had with the
assignment.

Friday 26/4

6.5

In the morning, my teacher offered for me to go and observe

some of the science classes as this will be my second major in

8:45-3:15

teaching. I sat in a year 8 science class and a year 11 chemistry

class. I found this was enjoyable and very helpful because at the
time, I was also undergoing a science placement at a school in St.
Albans. After recess, I was with the year 10 PE class. The teacher
asked me to produce a warm up activity for the class which was
a great success. I had all the students participating and they
responded well to my direction, the rest of the lesson was on
netball which they played for the remaining class time. In the
afternoon. I was with the year 11 PE theory class, they were
continuing on energy systems. I offered my help with some of
the questions and a few of the students allowed me to talk them
through the answers and help them have a better understanding
on the topic.

Today, I was with the senior boys football team. The weather
was cold, raining and windy and that was an experience in itself.

8:45-3:15

The teacher put me in charge of taking them for a warm up

around the oval and doing static and dynamic stretches. They all
cooperated with me and seemed ready for the game. I was only
able to stay for one of the games as I had to go to a Career
Development class. I found out they won all 3 games and are
going through to the next round!

Friday 3/5

6.5

In the morning, I got to see how the student welfare linked in

with the health department. I met the teacher in charge of

8:45-3:15

welfare and spoke to him and several students who saw him on a
regular basis. I learnt about the programs they have for these
students to deal with personal issues which were strongly
related to physical activity and healthy living. After recess, I was
able to conduct a full lesson of my own with the year 10 PE class,
I took them for basketball. I conducted many warm up activities
and skill acquisition games before going into a game situation. I
ensured they know all safety rules and had the required skills for
the game. Many of them didnt cooperate with me but as the
class progressed, they began to settle. During lunch time, I
assisted the year 12 PE teacher in conducting a fitness test with
the students. I was in charge of setting it up and recording the
results. The teachers said I was most helpful and very efficient
with set up and pack up. In the afternoon I was with the year 11
PE class where they took their knowledge on energy systems and
put it into practise. I was once again in charge of setting up and
recording the information for them. I also put the data into an
Excel document ready for them to analyse.

Wednesday 8/5

3.25

In the morning, I was with the year 7 and 8 Leisure Sports class.
They were supposed to be going on an excursion to a driving

8:45-12:00

range and mini golf centre, but unfortunately not enough

students had paid for it so it was cancelled. The teacher had
them start their assignment on Orienteering. He put me in

charge of explaining how to use a compass and finding North

which they found quite easy. They got to go out in the courtyard
and find their bearings and record their direction. After recess, I
was sent out to interschool Cross Country with the team. I was in
charge of marking the role and having their permission slips with
me. Unfortunately I couldnt stay to watch all the races, as I had
to attend a class but 5 students were invited to run and the next
round as they achieved a place in the top 3 in their age group.
Friday 10/5

6.5

In the morning, My VU supervisor, Lisa, came in for a visit to talk

to my mentor and myself about my progress in the placement.

8:45-3:15

We then spoke about the Report before she left. After recess, I
took another class with the year 10 PE class. We played
badminton and volleyball. I had them working with balloons
during their warm up activities which they all loved. We played a
few more games before going into a round robin of badminton.
Once they had enough of badminton, We got out the volleyballs
and played a few games until the class was over. I had great
responses from the class from my supervising teacher and the
students and I can feel myself developing more as a teacher. In
the afternoon, the year 11 students had a SAC on energy
systems. I was in charge of supervising the students, answering
any questions they had, and ensuring that no rules were
breached.

Wednesday

3.25

15/5

In the morning, the gym was set up for year 7 NAPLAN and the
weather was raining very heavily. So with the year 8 students
who are in the Leisure Sport class, we set them up in a spare

8:45-12:00

classroom and watched Happy Gilmore as it was related to golf.

After recess, I was with the year 8 PE theory class. They were
finishing off and handing in their fitness assignments so I was
helping any students who had questions or any problems with
their work.

Friday 17/5

6.5

In the morning, I helped my supervisor with putting all the

athletics data into an excel document from their recent carnival.

8:45-3:15

Once we did this we were able to select the athletics team and
distribute the permission slips. I also used this time to discuss
with my supervisor about his history of work. After recess, I took
the year 10 PE class in European handball and soccer. They were
very cooperative and had a great time in the class. In the
afternoon, I assisted the year 11 students with a practical SAC on
Biomechanics. I was once again in charge of setting up and
recording the data, and putting it into an Excel document for
them to analyse.

Wednesday

6.5

22/5

Today, I was with the year 8 boys soccer team. I was supervising
them throughout the day, during their games as well as between
matches. I assisted the teacher in writing up the side to ensure

8:45-3:15

that all students had a go on the field. It was great to see them
working very well as a team and showing great sportsmanship on
and off the field. They obtained the scores: 0-3, 0-4 and 0-6
Being undefeated!

Friday 24/5

6.5

Today, I was with the interschool athletics team. I was in charge

of ensuring that the students went to their events at the

8:45-3:15

designated times and being ready to compete. I helped them

with refining their skills in their events to ensure they completed
them at a high level. The day was very successful and most of the
students went home with ribbons.

___3.0 Graduate Capabilities_________________

Written Communication
The year 11 PE teacher had asked me to write up a lesson plan on Force for an upcoming
class. The following week, I went to ask him about what specific aspects I had to include, but
he was absent. On his desk he had left me a note which listed what I needed to include and
his email address if I had any further questions. I had written up a lesson plan and emailed it
to him, which he approved. When I presented my lesson to the class, I had exceptional
feedback from the teacher and he was very pleased with my ability to promptly
communicate with him despite his absence.

Verbal Communication
I was running a year 10 PE class outside. I gave them certain boundaries for them to stay
within while doing an activity so I was able to communicate with them and supervise them
appropriately. A group of them had gone out of the given boundaries and had missed a vital
piece of information in my lesson. I took the group aside and spoke to them about how they
had not followed my instruction and missed out on important information, and told them
they had to sit out for the remainder of the class. Less than 5 minutes later, the group
approached me and apologised for breaching the rules and wished to participate with the
rest of the class. I allowed them to join back in, and they participated very well and had
learnt their lesson in the importance of following rules.

Teamwork
On the day of the Interschool Athletics Carnival, the PE co-ordinator had a number of things
he had to organise before we left such as: mark the role, print out the schedule, ensure all
the permission slips had been signed, collect the first aid kit and collect the necessary
sporting equipment and uniform for the day. As there were two other teachers, as well as
myself and another student teacher attending the carnival, we were able to delegate the
jobs between the five of us. We were able to get these jobs completed as well as have all
the students on the bus and ready to go in less than fifteen minutes.

Working in an environmentally, socially and culturally diverse responsible

manner
Many of the students from Roxburgh College have a lower socioeconomic status and come
from less privileged families. Many of the students families were unable to afford the
school sports uniform. As I am a strong advocate for the importance of Physical Education, I
didnt want this to stop them from participating in Physical Education classes. I told the
students (with the support of the teacher) that if they dont have a sports uniform to bring a
comfortable change of clothes to wear for the sport class so they dont miss out. From the
start of my placement to the end, the number of students participating increased
significantly and they had gained confidence and a renewed desire to participate in school
sporting activities.

Locate, critically evaluate, manages and uses written, numerical and

electronic information
After the schools inter-house athletics carnival, the PE co-ordinator had the very large job
of organising all of the results from the carnival and inputting them into the computer to
update the school records and select the athletics team to represent the school. As I saw
how large this job was I offered to help out. We halved the work and he showed me what I
needed to do. I was able to locate the event sheet, evaluate the scores in the different ages,
update any school records that had been broken and record them in an excel document.
From here, we were able to select the athletics team very easily and keep the information in
an organised file to revisit at any point.

___4.0 Becoming a Reflective Practitioner_

Reflection One
4.1 Context
Jaclyn was running her first class on her own with the year 10 PE class. She chose the sport
of Basketball so had planned to do a warm up activity, a variety of skill drills and end with a
series of games. As the normal routine of this class was to get dressed, and play a sport for
an entire double period, they didnt like the idea of this class, so they let her know about it.
In response to their instant criticism, she stood her ground and made them follow her class
plan. For majority of the class they were very uncooperative with her, but she still made
them do all the drills she had planned for before starting the game, although, she began to
rush through the lesson because she was becoming impatient with them. When it came
time to play the game of basketball, they all became cooperative and joined in with the
game. They happily played basketball for the rest of the double period under her
supervision.

4.2 Critical Analysis

Jaclyn needs to remember that students cannot overrule her judgements as she is the
person in charge. It is important to grow close bonds with your students and have fun with
them, but you cannot cross the line where your level of authority begins to drop. Being a
student teacher already makes it difficult to gain a sense of authority as there is only a few
years age difference between yourself and the students. This is where you have to produce
a strictly structured lesson plan and stick to it. In this instance, it is also important to
develop a lesson plan that suits the class so they do remain interest throughout the entire
lesson.

4.3 Considered Opinion

I believe that I could have structured my lesson plan to be more suitable to the classs ideas
and not move away from their normal class regime. If I were to do this lesson plan again, I
would develop it around game situations. Instead of doing skill acquisition drills where they
are just passing the ball to one another, I would turn it into a game where they have to pass
Student Number: 3886899

15 | P a g e

Jaclyn Munro

the ball 10 times without dribbling before they can score a goal. This would help them gain
skills in team work and communication as well as working on the development of the skills
of passing in basketball. I also feel that if I had of become more involved and participated in
this activities with them, they would have felt obliged to do them with me. This is where I
can develop my teacher-student bond with them and gain a level of respect amongst the
peers.

4.4 Summary
I developed a lesson plan on basketball that involved a warm up activity, a number of skill
drills and finishing the class with a series of basketball games. I received very little
cooperation from the class and they showed no motivation to participate in the class until
we began to actually play a game of basketball. This was due to the fact that a normal class
for them was 100 minutes of them playing a game and no skill based activities. After
analysing the situation I found that this could have been because my level of authority was
lower than what it would be of their normal teacher in this class and also because my lesson
plan was developed to a different style to which the class is used to. If I was to repeat this
class again, I would develop my lesson plan around the needs and norms of the students
weekly Physical Education class, even if this is going out of my own comfort zone.

4.5 Recommendations
I would recommend that during the observation round of your placement; see how the class
responds to the specific style of the teachers approach to performing a lesson. As you are
watching a lesson, see what cues the teacher provides to improve the students skills and
how they learn to perform these tasks. The best way to do this is write down the lesson plan
as the teacher runs their class and take note of the students behaviour throughout the
class.
Another recommendation would be to take on as many classes as possible. The more
classes you take as a beginning teacher, the more experience you will gain. You will start
producing more elaborate lesson plans that meet a variety of class needs and expectations.
You will be able to develop lesson plans to suit all levels of ability and over a variety of year
levels. When producing lesson plans, try and incorporate different activities to what you are
Student Number: 3886899

16 | P a g e

Jaclyn Munro

used to and if things dont go the way to you want them to, you can go back and analyse
your lesson plans to make them more suitable to the class.

Reflection Two
4.1 Context
Jaclyn was in charge of the year 11 PE theory class on Force. She had produced a slideshow
presentation as a visual aid for the students to learn the concepts within this class. There
was a student in the class, who has an Attention Deficit Disorder that was singing along to
music on her headphones and not paying attention to the class work at all. In attempt to
resolve this problem, Jaclyn confiscated her mp3 player. Not long after continuing with the
class information the student began singing loudly in the back corner despite the fact she
had no mp3 player providing her with a tune. This began to distract the students sitting
around her. Jaclyn moved her to the front of the class where she had no students around
her. This made her stop distracting the class and she began to pay attention to the class
discussion.

4.2 Critical Analysis

As this is a VCE class, students need to be focused on the information being presented by
the teacher to ensure they have a good understanding of all the relevant information
required to pass their exams and SACs. When dealing with students who have ADD, you
have to be mindful of their personalities and how they will respond to you. As a student
teacher is someone who they arent entirely familiar with, they may act in a slightly less
disciplined manner to how they would work with their regular teacher. If you develop your
relationship with them, you will then be able to work and structure the class to suit all the
students needs.

4.3 Considered Opinion

As I have very little experience with people with an Attention Deficit Disorder, I spent a lot
of time developing a good bond with them which I could have spent helping other class
students with the work. If I were to repeat this again, I would use my observational classes
to talk to this person and develop my relationship with them sooner to avoid any problems
Student Number: 3886899

17 | P a g e

Jaclyn Munro

when I begin to take the classes. Having a set seating plan for these students would allow
them to be around students that they work well with and have the students that require
more help to be closer to the front of the class. This would then allow me to spend more
time with the students who need help with the class work and spend more time explaining
the theory. Ideally, this will lead to them being successful in their VCE and achieving marks
to their full potential. Another aspect that I would address is the use of mp3 devices in the
class. As many of the students did have distractions such as mp3 players, laptops and
phones with them while in the class that were not being used to assist them with the class
work, this effected their level concentration throughout the class. I believe at a VCE level
these devices should not be allowed in the classes.

4.4 Summary
I developed a year 11 Theory class on force. One of the students has an Attention Deficit
Disorder and was distracting to other members of the class by singing. In attempt to resolve
this problem I confiscated their mp3 player and moved them to the front of the class.
Having a sense of familiarity with people that have ADD will assist the student teacher in
ways of coping when these situations arise. During VCE classes there needs to be no
interruptions or distractions so the class can run to its full length and there is enough time
to assist students with more difficult concepts. If I were to repeat this class again, I would
ensure the student who has ADD is at the front of the classroom from the beginning of the
class and also have all distractions such as mp3 players, laptops and phone removed from
the class before it commences.

4.5 Recommendations
I recommend that during your observation round, you closely look at students behaviour
and interactions with each other. Closely monitor the ways the teachers cope with any
mishaps that occur within their class and replicate these punishments when you go to taking
a lesson plan. Having a set seating plan will ensure the students are sitting with people who
will not cause any burden to their work, especially at a VCE level.
Another recommendation is to eliminate all distractions from the classroom. Having the
students in a seating plan may lead to them working very well, but the students could
Student Number: 3886899

18 | P a g e

Jaclyn Munro

distract themselves from their work with media devices. At a VCE level, students need to
take in as much information as possible to ensure they are achieving high grades.
Eliminating distractions will make them focus on the work at hand which will lead to their
academic success.

5.3 Career Reflection

Personal Career Aims:

- To gain experience working in a High School environment in the fields of physical

education and heath
- To see the different types of teaching methods that experts in the field are using to engage
their class
- To develop a greater understanding of the roles and duties of the physical education staff
within a high school
a) My placement aims where very much achieved. I had an amazing insight into the Physical
Education and Health department at Roxburgh College. I was able to see the different styles
of teaching the members of the PE department had, as well as see how they went about
organising excursions and interschool sport days for the students. I have come out of my
placement with a high level of respect to Physical Education teachers for all the work they
do.
b) Some personal attributes I had prior to my placement was a lot of enthusiasm and
confidence. I held these very closer to me as I needed them to improve my employability.
On placement, I learnt how to adapt to certain situations, be flexible with class activities and
have a great sense of humour and a positive drive with all the students. I have left the
placement with a greater understanding of professionalism, ability to deal under pressure
and become a role model to the students.
c) I have developed specialised industry skills over the time I attended placement. One of
the biggest improvements I have had is class communication skills. I had a lot of trouble to
get the students to stop what they are doing and pay attention to me. As I became familiar
with the class behaviour and they styles of learning I was able to adjust to their liking. I used
my mentors assistance to assign a seating plan in the classroom as many of the students
were on behaviour cards. Having them away from their friends helped me gain their
attention quicker when it was required. This then allowed me more time to explain the tasks
and answer any questions they may have. I feel as though communication skills are one of
the most important industry skills to have in any workplace, not only specific to teaching.

5.4 Career Strategy

Many teachers and career professionals who have provided me with career advice have
strongly urged me to build up my networks. I chose my placement at Roxburgh College
because my Aunty is the Senior School Coordinator there. I was also considering doing my
placement at St. Bernards College because one of my cousins works there as a head
Physical Education teacher in the junior school.
As I started my placement, I conversed with many of the staff members within the College
as I wanted to further develop my contacts in the industry. By the end of my placement, the
Principal had confronted me asking me when I was expected to finish my Degree as they
were in need of a new Physical Education and Health teacher to start in 2014. One of my
mentor teachers also offered to become a Personal Referee as they were very happy with
my development throughout the placement.
Another great piece of advice I received was that I need to put my foot in as many doors as
possible. Doing voluntary working in this field shows that gaining experience and skills is a
priority to the student. This allows you to develop as a teacher within the industry as you
are more capable and familiar with the expectations.
At my placement, I was open to not only in school teaching, but also supervising at
Interschool sport days such as Athletics, Soccer and Cross Country. As I have gained
experience and feel more confident working at interschool sport days. I have started to put
my name down for more voluntary jobs offered by the University at different school sport
activities. I have also recently been accepted to do voluntary work at the 2014 Australian
Open so I am able to work at an elite sporting event. I think having a range of different work
experience placements makes you a lot more desirable and able to adjust to a wider range
of activities.

___7.0 Evaluation Victoria University_____

______Career Development Program__________
In my Career development classes and workshops this semester, I thoroughly enjoyed the
activities and the opportunities we were given. I found the tutor very captivating and
enjoyable to listen to as well as very helpful with the activities we were given.
I found the online contract system ideal. It was a great way to set up the contract and it was
simple to follow. It allowed us to organise it in our own time and was sent to our tutor
immediately and electronically so it wasnt able to get lost.
I found the lecture at the start of the year was a great introduction to the semester. Having
guest speakers who have been in our position before and become successful are greatly
motivating to strive for our goals. It was also good to see which organisations previous
students had attended for their placement, so we were able to see if they were in our local
area and whether they were restricted to public or private schools.
I think the report requirements are very thorough. It has made me look very deeply into my
placement and how much I have got out of this experience. I am very thankful that this is so
detailed because I will be putting my CPD into my Portfolio. The report writing guidelines
booklet (AKA. My Bible) was explained in great depth and was made clear as to what we are
getting marked on in the grading Rubric.
I have found the Victoria University Staff have been very supportive in this subject. My tutor
was constantly checking up on how our assignments were going and helping us organise our
placement.
I have very much enjoyed receiving emails concerning voluntary work and placement offers
from the Victoria University Staff. It showed me all the different kinds of work I can involve

myself in to further develop my skills and how often Victoria University is confronted to find
umpires, coaches and interns from various work places.
I found the assignments were very strongly linked to future career success. Having a strong
resume, an extensive list of contacts and the experience to back up skills are three major
elements of employability which is something we will all have to face in less than 2 years.
I found the VU staff visit to my placement was very useful. She was very friendly and
welcoming, she spoke to my supervisor about my progress to find out my strengths and
weaknesses, she spoke to me about any concerns that I had at the placement and was very
supportive. She also went over the report in extensive detail and provided me with support.

John Dodsworth
Physical Education and Health Coordinator
Roxburgh Park College

Dear John,
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for taking me as a student teacher. I felt very
welcomed by all the teachers and was treated with great respect from the staff and
students at the College. I really appreciated the opportunity to see how different PE
teachers apply their knowledge to the classroom in both practical and theory based
approaches. I was very grateful to be given the opportunity to write up lesson plans and
take my first attempts at teaching on my own.
I have sincerely enjoyed the time I have spent with you in the last 8 weeks. Given your very
busy schedule, I know that it was not always easy or convenient for you to take on the extra
task of mentoring me and I appreciate it very much. You gave so very generously of your
time, patience and knowledge to help me grow as a PE teacher.
As a result of your knowledge and guidance, I have a much deeper understanding of the
tasks a Physical Education teacher has to undergo on a day to day basis. I have learnt so
much over my time with you and I am very grateful of how helpful you have been. Every
piece of information and experiences you have shared with me will help me develop and
become a great PE teacher like you.
Yours sincerely,

Jaclyn Munro
