ACTIVITY NO. 9
MIXING OF NaOH AQUEOUS SOLUTION IN A BAFFLED AGITATOR TANK
The Objectives of the Activity
At the end of the activity, the student should be able to:
1. Apply the concepts and rules of thumb in designing an agitator tank.
2. Use prescribed figures, tables, and graphs for estimations and calculations.
The Problem
What power will be required to mix an aqueous solution of 50% NaOH in a
baffled tank, 2 m in diameter? The mixing will be performed in the vertical tank filled to a
height of 2 m by a disk turbine with six flat blades. The turbine is 0.67m in diameter and
positioned 0.67m above the bottom of the tank. The turbine blades are 0.134m wide
and turn at 90 RPM. The solution has a viscosity of 0.012 Pa-s and a density of 1500
kg/m3.
Scope of Design
1. Solve the power requirement.
2. Prepare and submit an equipment specification sheet, complete with equipment
drawing, and attach the required calculations.
