Different SEd Models?

What was
YOUR
experience
like attending
school?

Higher Ed is Not for Everyone:

However, Individuals with Psychiatric
Disabilities:

1) Are Underrepresented at Educational Institutions

(Corrigan et al., 2008)

2) Fewer Attempt Education (Corrigan et al., 2008)

3) Leave School Earlier (Waghorn et al., 2004)
4) Have Higher Dropout and Lower Completion Rates

There are pros and cons

Higher education has repeatedly been demonstrated to predict better vocational
outcomes in the general population.

(Waghorn et al., 2003)

5) Often First Episodes Occur During School Years

(Mowbray et al., 2005)

6) Experience Additional Barriers Such as Stigma

(Atkinson et al., 2008)

7) Often Need Additional Supports (Mowbray et al., 2005)

Higher Ed is Not for Everyone:

However, Individuals with Psychiatric

Disabilities:

I had to take an asset test, which is an ability test before

they admit you. And I remember going there, and I went
and hung out at the union for an hour before because I
was so very scared and nervous. And I hung out there an
hour, and then I wandered over to the room where I was
supposed to take the test. And I stood outside. I was
about a half hour early. And this little voice said in my
head, you know you dont belong here.

8) Unemployment is Extraordinarily High

(Mechanic, Bilder, & McAlpine, 2002)

9) Least Likely to Succeed in VR Programs

(Andrews et al., 1992).

10) Enormous Social Costs

(Cook, 2006; Marcotte & Wilcox-Gk, 2001)

11) Higher Ed. Positively Associated with Emp.

(Waghorn et al., 2004)

12) Higher Level Positions and Increased Income

Real Quotes

(Yelin & Trupin, 2003)

13) Vocational Training May Be Even More Effective

(Waghorn et al., 2004).

Uh-huh. I kind of, um, I started wondering around campus, I

just kind of couldnt concentrate, I couldnt focus, and I was
scared of this guy I thought was stalking me, too. So I think
that when that was going on, that just made my symptoms go
shoo! I was scared all the time, and I was going across campus
and trying to get out of my dorm. I didnt want to be there.
I think the symptoms were too pronounced. That I just knew
I wasnt capable of carrying a load of 12 or 15 hours. I just,
first things first, Im struggling for my life. Im not concerned
about my sociology grade.

Real Quotes

(Manthey et al., under review)

You know, when my self-confidence gets low theyre there to

help me up. When my symptoms arrive or come back or start
bothering me, theyre there to be there. It just seems like Ive
got support through the program here that will get me through
it.
Theyll even go to class if youre nervous about it, and theyll
set in class with you if the teacher allows that.
Knowing that its theregives me the courage to try things I
might not otherwise try. And it, just know that support is here
as I need it, a lot of times I dont need it, but I know it is there
if I need it.

My granddaughter cant wait for grade card days. So we can compare

our grade cards. Shes eight and shes been on the honor roll since day
one, never missed an honor roll. And she told me this last honor roll that
she did because she saw me working so hard

Was it worth it for you?

When I look towards getting a degree, I see financial help for my

family. I see growth in my social area. I see my husband and I
providing ourselves a better future
Well, financial status. Um , better standing in the community and maybe
stronger self-confidence, pride.
It would just open so many more doors for meand not just
educational and career ones. Social doors.
Because the more education you have, the more knowledge you have.
And the more knowledge you have the better off youll be in life

Is it worth it?

Real Quotes

(Manthey et al., under review)

I dont look at [my symptoms] as obstacles anymore. I look

at them as opportunities for growth. I may have a setback now
and then, but I know that Ill work through it and recovery, and
then Ill be stronger on the other side than I was going in.
A chance at life, the life I want to live. The experience of
going to college, if I died the day I got out of graduation, I
would still be happy. I would accomplish my goal.
My diploma is going to mean everything. When I put that
thing up on my wall, Im going to be able to look at this thing
every day. Every damn day
