Saving Water
Anderson, J. (2003). Water Science and Technology: Water Supply. The environmental benefits
of water recycling and reuse. Vol 3. No 4. 1-10.
This journal article offers how the worlds supply of fresh water is threatened by pollution, it ties
down with my topic on saving water by cleaning contaminated water. Rising demands for water
to supply agricultural, industry, and cities are leading to the competition of fresh water which can
become really bad. This article examines how water reuse increases the supply of water for
humans. It illustrates case studies in urban areas and explains how water reuse can lead to
environmental benefits, and most importantly it describes the economic water cycle planning
studies in Australia.
Cook, M. (2012, September 17). Environmental Performance reporting for the Natural
Resources Defense Council. [YouTube]. Available from https://youtu.be/n4lGwCpt6qo .
Michael Cook is reporting on the environmental performances that have been made for NRDC.
He describes the sustainability report on the Natural Resources Defense Councils everyday
activities. This contributes to my issue because NRDC is the council for my topic on saving
water and they play a big role in decision making to protect our water environment. In the video
Michael talks on the project between the Capstone Workshop team and the NRDC operations
staff, he explains the enterprise sustainability management software that they have to have in all
their offices. This new software will help enable detail monitoring and analysis on all of NRDCs
environmental performances. The presentation in the video helps the Workshop team conduct an
analysis that they will then recommend the best matches for NRDCs operational and report
goals.
McCully, Patrick. (2001, January 1). Rivers No More: The Environmental Effects of Large
Dams.Retrieved from https://www.internationalrivers.org/rivers-no-more-the-environmentaleffects-of-large-dams .
Patrick McCully provides information on the impacts of dams which is relevant to my issue
because it helps me explain the consequences of dams and how harmful they are to our
environment.
This article presents facts of the environmental impacts of dams. Dams fragment the riverine
ecosystem, isolating populations of species living in the dams and cutting off migrations. They
also break ecosystems by isolating the river from its floodplain. All the dams built all over the
world have resulted in massive reduction of animal species, they reduce the species diversity. As
well as flooding and fragmenting of some of the world's best wildlife habitats, reservoirs have
also flooded some of the worlds most beautiful and spectacular river scenery. The greatest
impact though, is that dams have extremely affected the extinction of fish species around the
world.

This website article is relevant to my topic because what this environmental group does is push
federal and state fisheries to change the commercial fishing to support an ecosystem-based
management plan, they also address the use of harmful fishing gear and they want to cut on
bycatch in the fishing industry. The Earth Justice group is very helpful towards the ocean
ecosystems, it works with fish regulators to ensure that managers know the impact on fish
populations. They want to stop ocean acidification and help the wildlife that rely on having a
healthy ocean, they also want to help communities around the world whose cultures have always
been tied to the sea. Earth Justice uses the power of law and the strength of partnerships
worldwide to preserve for impressive places and wildlife.
Rummel, T. (Producer), Stoecker, M. (Producer), & Knight, B. (Director), Rummel, T.
(Director). (March 10, 2014). DamNation [Motion Picture]. United States: Stoecker
Ecological and FeltSoul Media Production.
This documentary reveals the history of dams in America, its relevant to my topic because it
shows how we have brutalized waterways and caused the loss of wildlife habitat for the survival
of the human race in the United States of America.
In this documentary the narrator Ben explains to us how dams and hydropower represent a
pivotal part of U.S. history. He takes us back to 1881 when the first dam was built on the U.S.
side of Niagra Falls and all the history on some of the biggest dams after that. After being
established in 1902, the Bureau of Reclamations main purpose is to take water and have it stored
by creating dams and for them to use it as hydropower, this produces electricity to millions of
homes and also provides water to millions of people in the United States. What Ben really
focuses on delivering is that dam removal projects are important for the survival of our nations
waterways and for the Salmon and other wild fish that want to return to their spawning grounds
after decades without having access.
Trendacosta, Katherine. (2015, March 16). California is in the Middle of a Sea Lion Crisis, IO9.
Available from http://io9.com/california-is-in-the-middle-of-a-sea-lion-crisis-1691634431 .
The article offers information on the topic of sea lions appearing death on the beach shore due to
toxins poured into the water and scarcity of food, these facts contribute to my research topic by
giving me insight on the effects toxins in water have on other animals and not only fishes.
Katherine Trendacosta describes how the temperature of the water changes preventing sea lion
mothers from finding food for their babies and are therefore dying. Experts also believe that food
is being driven away from the islands where sea lions breed forcing them to enter the sea in
search for food and ending up in the coast. Food is scarce for sea lions and mothers are
abandoning their pups, every year the birth rate of sea lions decrease. Overfishing and the stress
of the warmer water are affecting our oceans and we need to be concerned.

promoting water efficiency strategies to help decrease the amount of water

wasted. The Natural Resources Defense Council is the nations most effective
environmental action group. They have more than two million members and
online activists, about 500 lawyers, scientists, and other professionals. The
NRDC staff works with businesses, elected leaders, and community groups
on the biggest issues that we face today. In the 21st century we have faced
higher risks of water shortages as a result of global warming, NRDC are
creating tools that help the public and government officials to better
understand water-related impacts of climate change. The reason why this
council protects and restores important waterways is to make sure that there
is enough water flowing to keep these ecosystems functioning for not just
people, but fish, birds, and wildlife that depend on clean water.
