SUPERIOR POST-TENSIONED PRESTRESSED CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION POST-TENSIONING ROCKANCHORING LIFTSLAB GENERAL CONSTRUCTION COMPANY PROFILE NARCISO PADILLA founded Prescon Philippines, Inc in 1967 bringing in for the first time to the country a new method ) of construction which is the post tensioning system of pre-stressed concrete construction. He selected the Prescon System of post tensioning instead of other system because he believes that is the best system for our country considering that we are situated in the earthquake belt. Narciso Padilla obtained his Bachelor of Arts | degree at Reed College in Portland Oregon. He pursued studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he finished Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He went further for advanced studies at the Universidad de la Habana as Ingeniero Civil and completed studies as Fallout Shelter Analyst at the University of Puerto Rico. NARCISO S. PADILLA, Founder After an intensive practice in the design of bridges, high-rise buildings, commercial and industrial buildings and housing developments from North and South America, he decided to specialize in anew system of construction which is the Prescon System, by joining Prescon Caribe, Inc., as its Vice President and General Manager After two years of familiarizing himself with the system, he returned to the Philippines to establish the first post - tensioning company which is the leader of the industry. SUPERIOR POST-TENSIONED PRESTRESSED CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION ROCK ANCHORING LIFTSLAB = GENERAL CONSTRUCTION WHAT IS POST-TENSIONING? ‘To understand Post -Tensioning i is best to consider frst the main difference between reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete, Reinforced and pre-stressed concrete both ullize the structural capabilities ‘of sel and concrete. Concrete fs very strong in compression, but relatively weak in tension. The ordinary reinforced concrete beam supports load by developing compressive stresses atthe top, but since the ‘concrete cannot resist the tension al the botiom, i cracks there. Reinforcing steel bars are placed within this tension zone to resist the ‘ension and control the cracking, Prevstressed concrete however, involves the application of forced or forces ‘ending to bend and compress a concrete structure or structural element in ‘order fo counteract the bending which results from loading, The forced ‘applied isthe tensioning of stretching ofthe steel component which usually in the form of high tensile strands, wires or bars. ‘There are two types of pre-stressed concrete, namely pretension and post tensioned pres-slressed concrete. These two differ in the method of ‘stressing he elements. A description ofthe construction sequences wil help bring out this diflerence. In pretension pre-stressed concrete the beams or elements are ‘constructed on a stressing bed and stranded cable is plaved between two buttresses anchored to a stressing bed which holds the force inthe srelched cables. After stretching the steel with hydraulic jacks, concrete is placed in forms around the cables and allowed to harden. When the ‘conerete reaches sufficient strength, the pre-stress forced is transferred tothe concrete by bond when the steel strand al the ends of the beam is cut loose from buttresses. In post-ensioned pre-stressed concrete, so called tendons (wie, strand or ‘cable ) are placed in the forms atthe proper location. These tendons are ‘covered with a mult layer heavy paper wrapping. Concrete is then placed in the forms around the tendons and allowed to arden tothe required ‘strength (usually 5 to 7 days ) Alte the concrete has hardened, the pre-siressing steel which is separated from the concrete by paper, plastic, ‘oF metal sheathing is sttessed or stretched by hydraulic jack which pushes direcly against anchorage imbedded inthe hardened concrete The force inthe stretched steel isthe permanenly transferred to the concrete through the anchorage devices at the end of the concrete casting Posttensioning the steel and anchoring it against the concrete produces desirable strains and stresses which serve to reduce or elminate cracks in ‘concrete, Thus, the entire section of concrete becomes effective n post tensioned concrete, whereas only the portion of section above the neutral axis is supposed to actin the case of reinforced concrete, “The used of curved tendons will help carry some ofthe shear in a member. In addition, pre-compression in concrete tends to reduce siagonal tension. Thus itis possible to use a smaller section in postensioned cone to ca he same amen of external shearn a eam, Pre-tensioned pre-stressed concrete {s usually fabricated away from the job site in a pre-stressing plant, whereas in post-tensioned pre-stressed ‘concrete the application of stressing forces to the structure is dane atthe jobsite, ‘The following are some of the many advantages of pre-stressed concrete, ‘moe spouiically postionstoned pre-sliessed unre, Serviceablity: Post-tensioned concrete design is more suitable for siructures of long span and those carrying heavy loads, principally because Othe higher strengths of materials employed. Members are more slender and hence more adaptable o artistic treatment. They yild more clearance ‘wivere its needed. They do not crack under working loads, and whatever cracks may be developed under overloads willbe closed as soon as the load is removed, owing tothe cambering effect of pre-stress. This becomes: an important consideration for such suctures as iong cantilevers. Under lve loads, the deflection is also smaller because ofthe effectiveness ofthe entire unttacked concrete section. Safety Ite ifcult to eay that ono type of etructure is eafor than another ‘The safety depends more on its design and construction than oni’ type. However, certain inherent safety features in pre-stressed concrete may be ‘mentioned. There is partial testing of both the steel and the concrete during Ppost-tensioning operation. For many structures, during post-tensioning, both the stee! and concrete are subjected to the highest stresses thal will exist in them during their ife of service. Hence if materials can stand postensionng, they ae elf posses suficent sens fr service ‘When properly designed by present conventional methods, post-tensioned Concceie structures have overload capacities similar to and perhaps sighty higher than those of reinforced concrete. For the usual Designs, the defect appreciably before utimate faire, thus giving ample ‘warning before impending collapse, The abilty to resist shock and impact loads and repeated working loads, has been shown to be a8 good in ppost-lensioned as in reinforced concrete. The resistance lo corosion is bolle than that of reinforced concrete for the same amount of cover, owing to the non existence of cracks, Economies: From an ecanomi poit of view, it's at ones evident that smaller quanltes of matenals, bth steel and cone, are required fo carry the same lads since the maori are of ghersbength Here ak ale avg ssn sean posensaned tors reuod inthe ncinaon othe endons, an the diagonal enson futherrinms by the prosance of pre eters. Theesod waht of Trembers il help economing te ost of struc esl Sead fad and secon of member ui esuitin sauna matenals an labor such ashe founceton cols, shear wal, et Further advantages of post-tensioned construction are as follows = ‘Where columns are vertical members and are not foo far apart, post-tensioned flat-plale slab is possible thus eliminating need for ceilings, No joints can be seen as it's monolithic structure, Concrete topping is not Fequired and therefore resulting in another considerable cost-savings “There is na camber nor deflection in a post-tensioned member at service load, Construction is much faster than another system of construction because form work can be removed after stressing usually afer 7 days. Cranes and other heavy equipment are not necessary Waterproofing isnot required fora two way post-tensioned slab, Construction can be siopped at any floor which i automaticaly ‘waterproofed when tendons are placed in both direction. Thus there is no additional expense forthe next phase of construction. tis castin-place Solid monolithic construction completely safe and resistant to earthquakes, ‘Where limited height is required, more floors can be constructed because of shallower beams and stabs Many other advantages accrue to the owner, architect or engineer such as design flexibly, reduced building height, and bolter aesthetic features. a sie) CON PuHILipPINes, INC. > J, SUPERIOR POST-TENSIONED PRESTRESSED CONCRETE CONSTRUCTI Ms POST-TENSIONING ROCKANCHORING LIFTSLAB GENERAL CONSTRUCTION PRESCON WIRE SYSTEM MULTI STRAND SYSTEM STG CG ee oa ane act ie coi ara iystem W mutt tendons are composed of varying numbers Stenercleved, hgh ele sek bnving « mniouan Bie ene eae eee guaranteed ultimate sirength of 240,000 psi (mastic and or grouted) .Each wire is carefully measured under controlled conditions and cut to the exact length required for the specific ys = tendon.
