SCIENCE LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE 5 SECONDARY

Year Level: 10

Date: N/A

Time: N/A

Period/Lesson: N/A

Topic: Science- The Heart Structure

Length: 45mins

What do Students already know and value?

This Lesson should take place within a class room or area that is adapted for students to sit and which contains
either an interactive white board or projector.
Students should be familiar with the major systems that support the body, and should be aware that the heart
pumps blood and oxygen throughout our body.

Curriculum Outcomes and Essential Learnings:

Curriculum Outcomes & Understandings (According to ACARA)

Multi-cellular organisms rely on coordinated and interdependent internal systems to respond to changes to
their environment (ACSSU175)
Use knowledge of scientific concepts to draw conclusions that are consistent with evidence(ACSIS170)
Plan, select and use appropriate investigation methods, including field work and laboratory experimentation, to
collect reliable data; assess risk and address ethical issues associated with these methods (ACSIS165)

Lesson Outcomes:
Cognitive: Students will know the anatomical structure of the heart and the valves in which blood flows through from
each chamber.
Demonstrative: Students will be able to list the four chambers of the heart and state the direct of the blood flow through
it.

Assessment of the outcomes:

Students will be provided with a worksheet that will have the diagram of the heart. Students will need to label each
chamber of the heart and valve associated with blood flow. Then they will be required to number which chamber & valve
the blood flows through in order.
Key Language: (words the Ss will need to understand/remember so that they can talk about the topic )
Ventricles, Valves, Atrium, Veins, Arteries, Blood, Cardiovascular System
Anticipatory Set: (How do I settle students/ prepare them for lesson/ encourage participation/ motivate?)
Provide students with the necessary time to settle down and get to their seats. If the beginning of the lesson seems flexible
students will be less likely to fight against the structure.
Allow at designated points of lesson for students to talk amongst themselves. Giving them a sense of sharing their own
opinion builds self-esteem, character and also may provide silence when silence is necessary.
Provide team work as a motivation throughout the lesson. Students tend to be more motivated when they are aware that
they are not alone. They also may participate more in a smaller group than large class room.
Have as much one to one interaction with all students but specifically those that seem out of touch socially or more
reserved. Even if it is a pat on the back or encouraging word, it might mean the world to them.

(Depending on time)
Teacher will put students
into groups of 3 or 4
depending on size of
class and instruct them
on their activity.

Activity#1: Students will

break into groups and design
a memorable system to
remember the layout of the
heart. Have students search
online for good illustrative
images and ideas in creating
power point for whatever
they come up with.

Class most likely will

start this activity in the
following lesson.

Their results need to have

The hearts four chambers,
the four valves and the
directional blood flow

Finish / summing up / link to the next lesson:

Depending on time have students either hand you their either finished or partly finished work to complete
next lesson.
If all groups finish with time to spare have each group or a representative preform/express their completed
activity in the next lesson.
In follow up lesson have the class vote individually on the winning group and whichever groups activity
wins it needs to be modified so that every group can learn it and by end of studying the heart preform it.
Homework:

Give students another worksheet about the heart to take home which they need to give to you the following day.
