Jobs: Working with stylists, models, clothing

Strategy and Tactics

Strategy
Stylists and Models
For the WTF Fall Fashion show, models and stylists were needed to ensure that the show would
be long enough. Five to seven was the ideal number of stylists and each stylist needed to have at
least five models. Different genders and fashion styles were desired from each stylist. Because
the Mass Communication Department is a diverse community, having various types of models
were needed to showcase those qualities that the department has.
Clothes
The fashion show needed clothing from a store located in the Rock Hill, York, or Charlotte area.
Having the store accessible for both models and stylists was important so that they could utilize
those clothes in the show. Also it was essential to the stylists and the models to have a specific
destination to place the clothes during the fashion show.
Audience
The audience is just as important as the participants of the fashion show. Getting their opinions
and feedback can help future fundraising projects that this class may have.
Tactics
Stylists and Models
To obtain stylists and models, auditions were held. Originally, they were on October 21 and 22.
However, auditions had to be extended to get more stylists and models because not enough
students attended the 1st two days. Flyers with the basic information were distributed through
social media and word of mouth. At auditions names, phone numbers and e-mails were taken to
deliver any information that the stylists and models needed.

Each stylist was asked to present three of their best thrifted outfits and were judged by the People
Coordination committee additional to its B members.
There were five stylists and 25 models in all. The committee decided that the fashion show
should consist of 4 categories: business, casual, wild card, and eagle pride. Each stylist had a
male and female for each category. In the end, the fashion show had 40 looks that went down the
runway.

There were 3 days of practice for the show:

November 2, 2014: 8:00-10:00 PM in DiGs Room 221
November 3, 2014: 8:00-10:00 PM in Richardson Ballroom (Dress Rehearsal)
November 4, 2014: 2:00-5:00 PM in Richardson Ballroom
Clothes
Platos Closet in Rock Hill allowed the stylists to use their clothes in the fashion show. The
committee and the participants of the fashion show had a field trip on Saturday November 1,
2014 from 10:00 to 1:00 PM. Each stylist was given a receipt of the clothes that were used in the
show so that they would be responsible for whatever lost or damages that came to the clothes.
There was an agreement between Platos Closet and the committee that promotional flyers would
be distributed to the audience and hang a Platos Closet banner during the fashion show. They
also wanted to know the results of the fashion show and pictures of the event to promote their
business.

Committee Report

This is the letter that was given to various stores to ask for clothes.
Store Managers,
Hope this letter finds you well.
A little background, at Winthrop University the Mass Communication major is growing
drastically. Recently there has been a shift in those interested in this field thus leading to an
increase need of financial support for the department. Through the major, students are able to
explore their specific career options, take classes that will provide proper guidance for their
future, and prepare them for the world after college. As stated before there is a financial need at
the University and this is where we, students of the Mass Communication major, would like to
ask you for your assistance.
The Mass Communication department has offered students a chance to brainstorm, plan and
conduct a fundraiser. Combined classes thought, what better way to introduce the seasons
changing and raise money than a fashion show? We also wanted to give back to our community
so we formulated an idea of a fashion show that would be put on and conducted by our peer
students at the university, with who may also be stylists and models. Students would be able to
enter the event at a discounted price if they bring clothing, which we will generously donate, to
Goodwill at the closing of the show.
We also came up with a twist for our fashion show; the clothing worn should be thrifted. This is
where we would like to ask for your help specifically. We would like to ask if you would like to
provide us with any gently used (or discontinued clothing) that you have readily available for our
fashion show. Once the clothing has been used we have brainstormed two ideas of what to do
next with the clothing. First, we can return your clothing back to your store or second, we could
donate the clothing to a local Goodwill.
The fashion show is comprised of 4 categories. They are business, casual, wild card, and Eagle
Pride (the models must wear garnet and gold to showcase our school spirit.
Platos Closet will be able to show different styles and promote the business. Allowing us to use
your clothes can have the potential to increase your sales from Winthrop students, who are a part
of your target audience.
Your help would be greatly appreciated. On behalf of the students of the Mass Communication
department, we would like to thank you for your time.

Regards,
Winthrop University, Mass Communication Students

Committee Report

To get into the fashion show for a discounted price, the audience was asked to donate clothes to
Goodwill. The clothes were sent to the Rock Hill location. The manager of the Goodwill was
Douglas Harris.
The stylists were given costume racks that were provided by Janet Gray, Associate Professor of
Theatre; Costume Designer. There were 2. Also John Timmons, Assistant Director of Residence
Life provided 3 racks to help the stylists organize their clothes.
Audience
On the seats of the audiences chairs, six questions were asked to obtain their feedback.

Did you enjoy the show? If no, what can we do to make it more successful?
What other venues would you like to see future fashion shows in?
How can we promote better?
Did you like the theme? If not, what other suggestions do you have?
How did you feel about the length of the show?
What did you think of the intermission? What other acts/performances would you like to see?

Obstacles and Challenges

There were two main challenges that were presented with the fashion show. They were models
and peers.
The models did not respond to their e-mails and it was difficult to communicate with them. The
committee solved this problem after the stylist to model roster was made. It was the stylist
responsibility to get into contact with their models so that the committee was not e-mailing and
sending texts to over 30 people. Also models would quit without informing the chair or any of
the members of the fashion show, which challenging with the task of assigning models to
stylists.
Though they tried to be helpful, people who were not B or committee members caused problems
within the fashion show. They wanted to take charge of the dress rehearsals, despite the fact that
they were not present to any of the auditions, meetings or practices. It produced leadership
confusion to the models and stylists.

Group Roles
Each member was to be at 75 percent of the practices and meetings. Their jobs were to build
relationships with the people that were participating with the fashion show. The committee was
the backbone of the fashion show and made sure that everything ran smoothly. Through the
obstacles and challenges, each member pulled their own weight and was accessible at all times
for meetings.

Group Interaction
The committee worked very well together, especially when it was time to create ideas for the
fashion show. Anything the chair asked for, the committee performed the task immediately,
making the fashion show process smooth. Responding quickly to e-mails, phone calls, and

random meetings was the life of the people coordination committee. Together, the group
achieved group cohesion and performed well with each other.

Problem Solving
Any problem that arose, the group was quick to respond to it. Instead of only discussing the
conflicts that the fashion show had, the committee had ideas concerning on how to resolve the
issue.

Leadership
Though there was one committee chair, each member of the group had leadership roles due to
the number of people that participants of the fashion show. Each member was given a stylist and
made sure that stylist and their models were doing well throughout the fashion show journey.
They also were given leadership roles behind the scenes during the actual day of the event to
guarantee the fashion show worked effortlessly and efficiently.

B Members
The committees B members were:
Temily Wardlaw
Brea James
Bria Bethea
Brittaney Major
Kaitlyn Samuels
They were present for every meeting and practice. They were considered a part of the committee
rather than solely B members. They were very helpful with conducting the fashion show.

Future Fundraising Groups

Even though the class made a fashion show within a month, could future fundraising groups have
more time to prepare for their events? It is very stressful because the class really wants it to be
successful.
