Abstract: In approximately 200 words, provide an
overview (or abstract) of your proposed
Community Engagement Experiential Education
Project.

I plan on holding lessons for high school

students from my old high school where
they can come and learn the basics of
chemistry before they take the class
during the school year. I will be
refreshing their memories of ideas and
concepts that the teacher will expect
them to know coming into the course, as
well as teaching them some ideas and

concepts that will be helpful for them to

be expose to before taking the course.
The students that will be coming to these
lessons will be incoming high school
sophomores that will be taking chemistry
during the 2015-2016 school year or
outgoing seniors that will be taking
chemistry in their first year of college.

Project will equal a 3-hour course (40 contact hours) in

time & effort
Student will fulfill a minimum of 40 hours of
engagement for EDGE project
I will be holding two hour lessons twice a
week for 8 weeks. That is 32 hours in
teaching. The other 8 hours will come
from preparing the lessons for each
meeting time.

Explains how the project connects with students

personal motivations and career aspirations

YES
PARTIAL
NO

This project connects with my after college

goals because I want to be a teacher. I think
the key to learning how to teach is actually
teaching. Someone can know and understand
all of the information well, but they do not
know how to explain it to others in a way that
they can understand. By taking the time to
learn how to teach these students chemistry
concepts, I will be bettering my future as an
educator.
Explains how the project ties in with concepts of
Community Engagement
Not only will I be benefiting myself by teaching the
students, but it is also benefiting them. They will be
more equipped to enter the classroom taking
chemistry if they have already been previously
exposed to the material. I am helping them prepare
for this course.
Provides a realistic timeline for completion of each
step of the project
May 6: Go into Desert Oasis High School, and talk
the principle to double check that he is okay with
me holding the lessons in the school. I also need to
make sure to ask if there are any times that are not
available from June to August.
May 6: Go into Desert Oasis High School and meet
with Dr. Bylina (high school science teacher) to see
what the major concepts I should be hitting in my
lessons to make sure the students are prepared for
his class.
May 11: I will have my lesson plans completed for
each lesson. I will go back into the high school to
show them to Dr. Bylina to double check that I have
everything covered.
May 25: Send out email to the students that have
expressed interest in the program. The email will
include all of the details of the program. By this
time, the students should have their summer

schedule for any sports or clubs they are involved

in. I will ask them to send me a copy of them so
that I can set up the dates and times that we will
be meeting.
June 1: I will send out an email to all of the
students again with the schedule of when we will
be meeting.
Week of June 15-Week of August 3: Hold the
lessons and teach the students. I will not know the
specific dates of each lesson until the students give
me their summer sports and clubs schedule on May
25. I want to work with their schedule so it is not a
hassle for them.

Explains how students personal strengths will help

complete the project

YES
PARTIAL
NO

I feel like the strengths that I have that will

help me complete the project are being able
to relate to high school students (I was just
one), being able to convey information in a
way that students can learn it, having the
patience to allow students to learn at their
own pace, and having good organizational
skills. When making lesson plans for each
day, organization is important. You have to
structure the lesson in a way that flows well
and students can follow along. I am also good
at coordinating schedules which will be very
important when trying to find times that work
best for everyone to meet.
Explains how student will overcome personal
weaknesses and outside threats to complete his or
her project

YES
PARTIAL
NO

As much as teaching is one of my strengths,

it is also one of my weaknesses. I will always
need to improve in this area even if I have
been teaching for years. I also have a
weakness in being able to accept that most
students simply do not care about their
school work. I know I will have to make the
lessons interesting enough that they will be
actively engaged in what they are learning.
