Technologyisindispensableinthe21stcentury.Itbringstremendousinnovations
tooursocietynotonlyintoourscienceindustrybutalsooureducation.Accordingto
McCainsbook,TeachingforTomorrow(TeachingcontentandProblemSolvingSkills),
Theuseoftechnologyintheclassroomisnotthecriticalissuefacingeducationinthe
21stcentury.Rathertheissueofforemostimportanceistodevelopthinkingskillsinour
studentssothattheywillbeabletoutilizethepoweroftechnologicaltoolstosolve
problemsanddousefulwork(84).Technologychangesthewayteachersteach,offering
educators effective ways to reach different types of learners and assess student
understandingthroughmultiplemeans.Italsodevelopsteacherstobemoreinnovative,
studyandconductthedetailsoftechnologytoplayabetterroleoftechnologycoachand
advisortostudents.Accordingtoa2013surveyfromtheU.S.DepartmentofEducation,
Aboutthreequartersofteachersareseeingbenefitsfromeducationaltechnologyfor
students,whichrangefrommotivatingstudentstorespondingtoavarietyofstudent
learningstyles.Thatistrue.Usingtechnologyinclassbringsbenefitnotonlytoteachers
butstudentsaswell.Studentshaveabetterunderstandingandhighconcentrationwhen
teachersaccompanytechnologywiththeirclassmaterials.Studentsshowmoreinterest
whenteachersusetechnologyratherthanwhenteachersusepapertextbooks.
Inaddition,studentsarelivinginthetechnologyworldnow.Knowingtechnology
isessential.Also,learningtousetechnologyinclassroomsbringseffectivebenefitsto
students.Bylearningthecomputer,studentscanunderstandhowsoftwareandhardware
processingworks,theconnectionbetweentheWebandtherealworld,andvisualizing
andmodelingbyusingsoftwareprograms.Learningtechnologygivesstudentsbasic
writingskills,mathskills,problemsolvingandcriticalthinkingskills.
Overall,technologyisanubiquitouspartofourstudentslives.Technologyis
located everywhere our students go. As teachers, we do have our responsibilities to
educate our children properly. The world is changing very rapidly. The information,
facts,andresultsthatexistedinthepastarechangingandnolongerexisting.Allwehave
to do as teachers is conduct and study the new information, uptodate sources,
developing technology constantly in this rapidly changing world, and educate our
growingstudents.

results,basically,Nevadatechnologystandardsstartfrom2ndgrade,unlikeCCSD
technologystandardswhichstartat3rdgrade.(CCSDofferscomputerandtechnology
educationoneyearlaterthanStatestandards.)
Tocompare5thgradesstandards,CCSDdemonstratesveryspecificstandardsunlike
StateofNevadastandardswhichshowverysimplesuggestions.Also,standard2.0on5th
grade,StateofNevadastandardsuggestscommunicationandcollaboration:Students
usedigitalmediatocommunicatecollaborativelytosupportindividualandcontributeto
others.However,CCSDstandarddoesnotcontaincommunicationandgroupactivity,
althoughtheystillhaveveryspecificsuggestionsofdigitalmediausages.On
standard3.0,bothCCSDandStatesuggestResearchinformationandevaluatebyusing
technologytools,solveproblemsandmakedecisions.However,CCSDsstandardsare
havingmoreadvancedprocessesbyshowingthedirectionofusinghyperlinktocollect
information.Standard5.0CCSDsuggestrecognizingthesystemsthataremadeupof
individualcomponentsandthateachcomponentaffecttheoperationofthesystem.
Otherwise,Statestandardsaremorefocusedonunderstandinghuman,culture,and
societalissuesrelatedtotechnologyandlegal,ethicalbehavior.OnStandard6.0,CCSD
suggeststhatStudentsevaluatetheimpactandethicalimplicationonindividuals,society
andtheenvironment.ThisissimilarwithStatestandard5.0.Statestandard6.0is
demonstratingasoundunderstandingoftechnologyconcepts,systems,andoperation.
ThedifferencebetweenCCSDandStatestandardon8thgradeisCCSDsuggestsusing
productivitytoolsincludingwordprocessing,spreadsheets,database,multimediaand
telecommunicationonstandard1.0.However,Statestandardfocusedonchoosinggoal
orpurpose,andsolvingproblems.Onstandard3.0,statestandardsuggestsadvanced
techniques:locate,access,synthesize,andevaluateinformation.CCSDsuggeststouse
organizingtools,hyperlinkandbibliography.Onstandard5.0,CCSDfocusedon
systemsoutputandnecessarytoachieveadesiredoutcomebut,statestandardfocused
onusinginformationsafely,andlegallybycitingresources.
Ongrade12thstandard2.0,CCSDsuggeststodemonstratemultimediastrategies,analyze
andcritiquemultimediapresentation;however,statestandardstillfocusedon
electronicallyinteractingforaspecificgoalorpurposewithgroups.Statestandard4.0
suggestsMoreadvancedsystemssuchasanalyzingthecapabilitiesandlimitationsof

1. OpenyourPowerPointorOpenOfficepresentationwizardtool.
2. Onyourfirstslide,youwillhaveyourowntitleofstory,yourname,classname,
datethatyoumakeandyourteachersname.Decoratethewhitebackgroundofa
slideasbestasyoucan!!
3. Onyoursecondslide,youwillbeginyourstoryincludingasimplemathematic
question.(UsetextboxfromInsertcommandontop)Youwilldrawapicture
fromyourstory.YoucanusetheShapetoolfromInsertCommandonthetopof
thewindow.TheShapetoolhaseverykindofshapesothatyoucanimitateyour
foodpicturesuchaslinesandconnectors,rectangles,arrowsandsomanyvarious
basicandcomplexshapes.
Forexample,withmywatermelononthesample,Idrewabigovalshapeand
clickedmyleftfingertoopenformatshape.OnceFormatshapepagewas
opened,Ichangedlinecolorasblackandfillcolorasgreentoexpressthe
watermelonpeel.Next,Idrewanotherovalshapeinsideofthefirstoval,thistime
alittlesmaller.Ichangedfillcolortoredwithnoline.Tomakeseedsinthe
watermelon,gotoshapetoolsandclickcircleanddrawitverysmall.Sameas
above,gotoformatshapeandchangethefillcolortoblackwithnoline.Now,
letsgotoashortcut.Clickthelittleseed,use[ctrl]+Cand[ctrl]+V.ThiswayI
madeafewmoreseedsandplacedthemontherightlocation.Thelastmainpoint
isverysimpleandalsoyouwillbesurprisedonceyouknowthisfunction.Click
theblankrightabovewatermelonanddragitbycoveringtheentirewatermelon.
ThengotoArrangecommandandclickgroup.Then,alltheindividualshapes
willbetogetherasagroup.

fingerandclicksaveaspicture.Then,insertthepicturewhereyouwantitand
cropittowhatevertheshapeyouwanttocrop.

Formativeassessment:TeachershouldhaveappropriatePowerPointtechniquetoteach
andevaluatestudentsprogressbeforethelessonbegins.Teachersshouldofferenough
instructionsanddemonstratethelessonstepbystepbyshowingthepresentationto
students.Teachersshouldrecognizewherestudentsarestrugglingandhelpthem
immediately.
