Water Flow Rate Practical Report

Aim: To find out what elements vary the velocity of pumping the
same volume of water up by using water pump.
Prediction: The higher voltage acted on the motor of the water
pump, the faster water flow rate will be. The bigger sizes of the
holes on the water pump pipe are, the higher speed of pumping
the water up.
Equipment: Laptop, Inventor software, 3D Printer, Power supply
equipment, Wires, Two plastic tubs, Stop watch
Materials: Plastic, Water and Metal
Method:
1. Design the colour and size of the T piece part, pipe part
and shaft part of the water pump and do the 3D drawing
for each of them on Inventor.
2. Design and draw 3 Archimedes screws with different
colour, length, shape and size on Inventor.
3. Use the Vernier Calliper to measure the size of the motor
we will use model it on Inventor.
4. Assembly all parts of the water pump (T piece, pipe, shaft,
motor and Archimedes screw) on Inventor to check if
everything joins together accurately.
5. Save the Archimedes screw designs and pipe part as stl
document.
6. Use the 3D printer to print the Archimedes screw and pipe
out.
7. Join all parts together.
8. Connect the power supply equipment and the motor of the
water pump together by using wires.
9. Put more than one litre water in one plastic tub.
10.
Set the voltage that will output from the power
supply equipment.
11.
Put the bottom of the water pump in the water and
turn on the machine.
12.
Measure the time the water pump takes to pump up
one litre water.
13.
Change the voltage that is outputted or the size of
screw and the pump pipe with different sizes of holes,
follow the same process as above.
14.
Record the measurements and compare them.

15.
16.

Conclude the results

Evaluate the experiment.

Conclusion: The higher voltage acted on the motor, the faster

velocity of pumping up the water is and the less time will be
taken to pump the water up. The larger size of holes of the
water pump pipe are, the faster velocity will be. The higher
voltage acted on the motor of the water pump, the more power
will be cost. Consequently, the size of the holes of the water
pump pipe and the voltage acted on the motor of the water
pump vary the velocity of pumping the same volume of water
up.
Evaluation: Our predictions before doing this experiment are
exactly the same as what we found out from the dates we got.
We did do well in working as a team together and we also had a
clear distribution of what each member was doing for this
experiment. We had successfully got the dates we wanted and
these dates we got are very useful for us to find out what
elements influence the velocity of pumping up the same volume
of water. What we can improve next time is to try to find out if
the length, revolution and flight number of the Archimedes

screw will vary the velocity. We will also try to change the
included angle between the horizontal and the water pump pipe
to see if it influences the velocity of pumping water up because
these will influence the design of the model boat and the
placement of the parts straight away.
