MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS
P L A N N E D PA R E N T H O O D
B Y: D A L I A A V A L O S
CONFLICT PERSPECTIVE
This medical institution was founded during a time period
where women didnt have the right to vote, divorce, or sign
contracts.
Women were restricted to learn about contraceptives and
family planning methods due to Comstock Laws of the 1870s.
Contraception and being informed about it was seen as
obscene
This put women in a position where they were seen as inferior
because they didnt have control over their own bodies.
According to Karl Marxs conflict theory, women in this time
period were a perfect example of pushing people of lower
status into obedience, thus creating inequality.
CONFLICT PERSPECTIVE
In more modern times, Republicans are recently trying to
defund planned parenthood because they are accusing Planned
Parenthood of illegally using and selling aborted fetus tissue.
Pro-life groups have claimed to have footage as evidence that
Planned Parenthood is selling such for profit.
Planned Parenthood receives over $500 million a year from the
government but it prohibited to use that money for abortions.
Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz claims that money
from tax payers shouldnt be supporting an ongoing criminal
enterprise.
Research has show that by having clinics like planned
parenthood helps people with their health but it is also shown
to help by increasing incomes within families, reducing poverty
and helps Americas economy save money.
CONFLICT PERSPECTIVE
Studies have shown that due to the services that planned parenthood provides, 63% of
women have been able to finish school guaranteeing 56% of them financial stability.
This is also helpful for the economy because this prevented 2 million unintended
pregnancies and half of those would have resulted in unplanned births according to a 2013
study.
This would have put extra financial strain on the economy which republicans want to avoid.
Republicans dont want the government to fund Planned Parenthood but want it to fund
other clinics similar to Planned Parenthood.
This will just create an overwhelming over flow because there aren't enough clinics similar
to such.
Republicans and the wealthy might feel that it is an inequality to them because they feel
that this money is coming out of their pockets to support low cost clinics.
According to Max Weber, people sometimes not only want economic power but also
political power; The house recently voted to carry on an investigation towards Planned
Parenthood.
Dawn Laguens, Executive vice president of Planned Parenthood stated that this decision is
an obvious part of a political agenda that wants to make abortion illegal in the U.S but still is
willing to cooperate with them
FUNCTIONALIST PERSPECTIVE
Planned Parenthood is a low-cost clinic that helps a
numerous amount of both women and men a year,
whether they have insurance or not.
This medical institution is part of the functionalist
perspective because a great number of people in
society depend on low cost health care to stay
healthy and functional people for society's needs.
Also, the need for sex education awareness
promoted by Planned Parenthood is important for
societys functioning to prevent the transmission of
STDs/STIs and the sexually transmitted chronic
disease, HIV/AIDS.
FUNCTIONALIST PERSPECTIVE
According to Emile Durkheim, deviance is important and
a necessary part of a successful society.
Sangers fight for women to gain the right to decide over
their own bodies is an example of deviance because her
journey towards womens equality was seen as
controversial.
Sangers activism lead to many significant historical
events in the womens rights movement including:
In 1937, The American Medical Association officially
recognized birth control as essential in the practice and
education of medicine.
North Carolina was the first state to acknowledge birth
control as a public health measure.
FUNCTIONALIST PERSPECTIVE
In May 9th 1960, the FDA( Food and Drug Administration)
approved the birth control pill after research was done by
biologist Gregory Pincus.
In 1973, the Roe v. Wade case declared that abortion was now
legal under the 14th amendment and it was unconstitutional
to perform abortions that only saved a womans life.
Today, sex education is now taught in schools, women have
the right to having an abortion to end unplanned pregnancies,
contraception is made affordable or even free, and
reproductive health services are made easily available to
potentially save lives.
Sangers activism is seen as and respected as very important
progress and advancement made in womens rights history.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I believe that Planned Parenthood is a great
resource to have in our communities. From
personal experience, I know first hand the
compassion and care that they give when you go
to their clinics. Therefore,
