When we have two actions in the past, described in the past simple:

Jamie and I watched an episode of Doctor Who at 9:00 yesterday night.

Yesterday I went home at 10:15 pm.

We can combine them with the help of the past perfect:

Jamie and I had watched an episode of Doctor Who before I went home.
When I went home at 10:15, I had watched an episode of DW with Jamie.

When we have two actions in the past, we use the past perfect to describe the
action that happens before the action in the past simple.
Chronologically:
1. Past perfect
2. Past simple
3. Our present time
