The past perfect structure is very similar to the structure of the present perfect
(subject + have + past participle), but in the past perfect the auxiliary verb have
is used in its past form had:
PRESENT PERFECT
TRANSLATION
PAST PERFECT
TRANSLATION
I have seen
Yo he visto
I had seen
Yo haba visto
I havent seen
Yo no he visto
I hadnt seen
Yo no haba visto
Have I seen?
He visto yo?
Had I seen?
When we have two actions in the past, described in the past simple:
Jamie and I had watched an episode of Doctor Who before I went home.
When I went home at 10:15, I had watched an episode of DW with Jamie.
When we have two actions in the past, we use the past perfect to describe the
action that happens before the action in the past simple.
Chronologically:
1. Past perfect
2. Past simple
3. Our present time
