Lesson Context
Class Background:

There are 21 students in this class, 8 males and 13 females. They did a 3-day walk at Wilsons Prom in first term. They
are still not mixing very well but are tending to remain in already established friendship groups. The commitment and
achievement levels in the class vary greatly (from some who have not been passing, to others who are doing very well).
The class just completed working through topic 1.2.1 Experiencing and responding to outdoor environments, and are
currently working on topic 1.2.2 Knowing outdoor environments.

Outdoor Environments, Key Knowledge 2, Knowing outdoor environments.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this lesson students should:

Be able to articulate that while experience can give people knowledge, that reflection is the often forgotten
component of this equation.
Be able to understand that natural environments can be seen, understood and valued from different perspectives.

Your Personal Goals:

During this lesson I would like to focus my learning on:

Strategies and techniques to maximise student engagement and therefore their learning.

Back-up Plan:

If there are any issues, the students can instead work on a reflective piece of writing about their 3-day bushwalk at
Wilsons Prom. (Questions such as: What part of Wilsons Prom did you walk through? Did you feel well prepared
why or why not? What was the weather like? What did you do apart from walk? What was the best thing you
remember? What was the hardest challenge you went through? What do you think needs to be changed for next
years trip? What shouldnt be changed for next year? What did you learn about yourself? Others? Nature?).

What experiences helped Chuck

know his environment?

Whiteboard

Chuck would have been more

successful in his survival strategies
more quickly if he had learned about
the islands ecology and natural
history before being stranded.
Our understanding of the natural
environment will be greater if we
experience it than if we read about
it.
When a person has an experience
they gain knowledge.

would like to.

Writing ideas & opinions on the board,

Highlighting connections between
ideas.

10.17 8 mins

Asking students to respond to

the following statements by
standing on a line from strongly
agree to strongly disagree.
Wait to see what students think about
the third statement (experience =
knowledge) and if there is any mention
of the role of reflection. If not, raise this
issue as a central idea.

10.25 2 mins

Explaining that in groups of 4

people, each person needs to
research a different topic:

Positioning themselves somewhere

on the agree-disagree continuum
according to their opinion.
Presenting their opinions and

perspective is important? And why
do they think it is important?
