Outline of The Youth of Today:

The Youth of Today (TYOT) has been set up by the government to increase the number and quality
of leadership opportunities for young people. It aims to encourage a culture where young people are
welcomed as leaders of change. Changemakers is one of seven organisations leading and delivering
on The Youth of Today.

Outline of host organisation:

Changemakers
Changemakers are young people who lead positive change in their world.  The Changemakers
Foundation exists to discover, inspire, develop and connect these Changemakers. We also clear
their path in the world by changing the culture of organisations and the direction of policy.  We’re
creating a world in which young people have the confidence to lead and everyone understands we
need them to.

Outline of opportunity:

To be a part of a small group of online volunteers whose job it is to manage the development of The
Youth of Today’s main site (www.theyouthoftoday.org) and also to drive interesting content to our
social media sites including facebook, twitter, YouTube and flickr.

The role involves the following:

 Attending regular meetings to discuss ideas around the development of TYOT’s online
presence
 Attending training sessions particularly around gathering interesting content and using social
media
 Travelling across the country to report on youth leadership events and gather content (in the
form of photos, videos, audio)
 Taking photos as well as recording video and audio footage
 Interviewing young people and ensuring you get permission forms from them to be able to
use their interviews in publicity
 Ensure you regularly update the TYOT social media sites including the Blog, twitter and
facebook sites via posterous
 Working alongside the editor of the TYOT e-news bulletin for young people, as well as
TYOT’s Media Advisor to ensure that all content gathered is publicised well
 Collecting feedback on what key stakeholders think of the TYOT website(s)
 Working alongside the TYOT web designers to develop the TYOT website, according to
feedback collected

Person specification:

 Enthusiastic
 Hard working
 Creative
 Bold and confident to assert your ideas
 Be on time, organised and committed to the goals of The Youth of Today
 Ability to work individually and use your own initiative
 Ability to work as part of a team

Skills needed:

 Good communication skills – both written and verbal


 A keen eye for detail
 IT literate – you must be efficient at using Microsoft packages and the internet.
 A good team player – you will be expected to work with a number of different people and
organisations.
 Initiative to work on your own – a lot of this work will need to be done with limited guidance
and support.
 The ability to get on with others – you will need to gain the respect and support of others!
 Knowledge of social media (although training will be provided)

Skills/additional opportunities the volunteer would gain:

 An overview of The Youth of Today, with the opportunity to meet/find out more about other
partner organisations
 Access to occasional training opportunities
 Networking with other young people involved in The Youth of Today
 A huge range of skills to assist you in furthering your career in the Third Sector, or any
business
 The opportunity to have real responsibility and show your leadership abilities in a supportive,
and at the same time, challenging environment.

Commitment required:

Length of opportunity:
Between April 2010 and March 2011..

Commitment:
Meetings will be held in April and in August, with training provided at these meetings. Other
additional meetings may be held if necessary, but these will be decided by the group.

You will also be expected to do some travel across England to attend TYOT events. The group will
be expected to travel to at least one event per month. (expenses will be provided).

Important dates:
Deadline date: 5pm, Wednesday 31 March 2010.

Meetings/Training will be held in April 2010 and August 2010. The date of these will be decided when
the group has been recruited.
