Station 2: Handball and Maintaining Possession

Activity 1: Maintaining Possession (Keepings Off)


1. 5 v 1 Keep off Handball (until each participant has touched the ball without interception)
2. 4 v 2 Keep off Handball (until each participant has touched the ball without interception)
3. 3 v 3 Keep off Handball (until each participant has touched the ball without interception)

Time Allocated: 5 Minutes

Activity 2: 4 v 4 Go for Goal


Game: 3v3 2 Halves and 2 Goals (1 at each end)
Space Required: 15 x 15 m
Rule: Implement 2 Halves and 2 Goals (1 at each end)
Objective: Score a goal by handballing through the designated area.

Time Allocated: 10 Minutes

Activity 3: 4 v 4 Go for Goal (First Handball Backwards)


Game: 3v3 2 Halves and 2 Goals (1 at each end) - same as previous game
Rule: Implement the rule that the ball must be handballed backwards before it is allowed to be move forwards

Objective:
Score a goal by handballing through the designated area.
Maintain possession
Teaching Point: Give Visual Explanation or Guided walk-through of this so students understand

Why handball backwards?
How does moving after you have disposed of the ball assist in helping your team maintain possession?
What are the three main options when the player has the ball in their hands in a normal AFL 9s game?

Activity 4: Back to 4 v 4 Go for Goal


Game: 3v3 2 Halves and 2 Goals (1 at each end)
Space Required: 25 x 25 m
Rule: Implement 2 Halves and 2 Goals (1 at each end)
Objective: Score a goal by handballing through the designated area.

How has implementing a kick changed the game?

Activity 5: Back to 5 v 5 Go for Goal (Kicking and Handball)

Game: 3v3 2 Halves and 2 Goals (1 at each end)


Space Required: 25 x 25 m
Rules:
Implement 2 Halves and 2 Goals (1 at each end)
Kicking is allowed
5 successful passes (Hand or Foot) = 3 points
Handball Goal Only= 6 Points

Objective: Score a goal by handballing through the designated area.
