WARM UP PRETEST FOR UNIT 2

Connect the words from column 1 with words
from column 2.

Column 1
1.Atom
2.Substance
3.Molecule

Column 2
1.Mass
2.Element
3.Particles

For EACH pair of words (do this 3 times), write a

sentence like this:

I will connect

and

because .

IN YOUR NOTEBOOK
1.How many drops of water do you think
a penny can hold before spilling over?
2.If you could zoom in as far as possible,
on a penny that had drops of water on
top of it, DRAW and label what youd
see / OR write 2-3 sentences
explaining what youd see.

WHAT ARE ATOMS?

- Everything you can see,

touch, smell, feel, and taste is
made of atoms.
- Atoms are the basic building
block of all matter, and matter
is anything that takes up
space.

ELEMENTS
A chemical element is a substance
that cannot be made into a simpler
form by ordinary chemical means.
The smallest unit of a chemical
element is an atom, and all atoms
of a particular element are
identical.

PARTS OF AN ATOM

- Nucleus: at the center of

the atom. Made of
protons and neutrons
Protons have a positive
charge. The number of
protons in an atoms
determines what element the
atom is.
Neutrons are about the size of
protons but they have NO
charge.

PARTS OF AN ATOM

Electrons:
- much smaller than protons or
neutrons,
- have a negative electrical
charge,
- orbit (move in a circle) around
the nucleus.

IONS
To become stable, an atom will give, take, or
share electrons.
When an atom gains or loses electron, this
creates an ion. Ions have a positive or
negative charge.
losing electrons = positive charge (cation)
gaining electrons = negative charge (anion)
Atoms with an EQUAL number of protons and
electrons have NO charge.
