GA DOE 2015 Library Media Program Evaluation Rubric

Memo to School Principal

To: Principal, SCES
From: Media Specialist of SCES and Practicum Student
Subject: Library Media Program Evaluation
Mrs. Brown and I recently were able to sit down and evaluate our media center
according to the GA DOE 2015 Library Media Program Evaluation Rubric. There are
a total of 20 different aspects of our library that we were able to measure using the
rubric, and there was one element we were unable to measure (category three,
staffing) because we didnt meet state guidelines. After our meeting, we concluded
that our media center is exemplary in 1 of the elements that were measured;
proficient in 12 of the elements, and basic in 7 of the elements. You will read below
suggested action plans to move our media center from basic, to proficient, and a
plan to move one of the elements we considered as proficient to exemplary.

Areas Identified as Basic & the Action Plan to Move These Areas to
Proficient
Category 1 - Student Achievement and Instruction
*Element 2 - Collaborative Planning
Action Plan Right now, the librarian only collaborates with teachers as the
teachers request. To move from basic to proficient, the librarian will get more
acquainted with the Prek-5 curriculum, and find and share resources that the
teachers will find helpful to implement in lessons.
*Element 3 Professional Library Staff is Actively Engaged in Teaching
Roles
Action Plan Right now, the librarian exclusively teaches lessons as the teachers
request, and in order to move from basic to proficient, one idea is for the librarian
to collaborate with the teachers to add 2.0 tools and/or literature to the units that
the teachers are planning. The librarian can attend a grade-level PLC at least once
a month with each grade-level.
*Element 6 - Student achievement is routinely assessed
Action Plan- Right now, the librarian does not work with the teachers to assess the
students unless the teachers are using the computer labs housed in the library. In
order to move from basic to proficient, the librarian will work with the teachers to
assist in creating rubrics or other measures of student achievement. Some of the
lessons planned as a result of the action plan for element three will be assessed.

Category 2 - Technology
*Element 7 Technology Management
Action Plan Right now, the librarian and the tech specialists at SCES are two
separate components at the school. In order to move from basic to proficient, the
librarian will collaborate more with the tech specialists to update and replace the
hardware for the computer labs.
*Element 8 Technology Integration
Action Plan Right now, there is an enrichment class that the students attend
called technology, and most teachers look to the technology instructor for
assistance with instruction involving technology. In order to move from basic to
proficient, the action plan for element three about using 2.0 tools when the librarian
serves as a teacher will be implemented. The librarian can also work with the
technology enrichment instructor to host PLCs that focus on getting the teachers
familiar and comfortable with the tools.
Category 5 Administrative Support
*Element 19 Library Policy
Action Plan Right now, the library policy is not updated on a frequent basis. In
order to move from basic to proficient, the librarian and administration will work
together each summer to update the library policy as needed.
*Element 20 Budget
Action Plan Right now, the library does not spend the allotted amount given in a
year, and some of the funds are used to serve other purposes in the school. In
order to move from basic to proficient, the librarian will work with administration
during the summer to create a budget for the library.

Action Plan to Move One Area from Proficient to Exemplary

Category 1 - Student and Achievement and Instruction
*Element 4 Resources Encourage Reading, Viewing, and Listening
Action Plan Right now, the media center has book fairs, implements the
Accelerated Reader program, and gives book awards which many students find
intriguing. In order to move from proficient to exemplary, the librarian will begin
more activities to entice the patrons. There will be an area designated in the media
center called The Coop that is purely for reading for pleasure. The librarian will
also work with administration to budget for digital resources that will be available

for teachers to check out for students. There will be more mini-lessons that will
instruct students on how to find the information that they are looking for to enable
the students to become more and more information literate. These additions to the
library should help our center move from proficient to exemplary.
